I just bought the Q and its one of the best phone i have ever owned. I am in love with it. I'm finding out later today how compatible it is with my computer. keep your fingers crossed.

I have the Q and it's great but it doesn't match some of your criteria.
-It's over $100 no matter where you get it.
-Syncing with OSX requires The Missing Sync ($40)(a great program)

Other than that it's great for messaging of all kinds, is multi-talented, and has a good camera.

Yes I have the krzr and a macbookpro and it works wonderfully. There are a few things that you need a PC for (song transfering and seem editing etc..) but other then that its a slick phone..and the camera is outstanding and chicks dig it!! ;)

I'm curious as to what can be done between the krzr and mac.

I bought a SLVR L7c from Verizon a little over a month ago, and I have to say that it isn't too bad (aside from the camera).

The MicroSD card isn't very accessible (behind the battery, WTF?) but once it's in there, it's fine. It's pretty light and fits well in my pocket, and has the ring+vibe which is nice. It's also pretty cheap ($70 after rebates w/ plan). As far as bluetooth, while not completely unlocked, it's far better than Verizon's previous offerings (OBEX for pics, contacts -- haven't tried mp3's yet).

BT Sync with a Mac is good, though I've only sent a picture via BT. I was in Fry's and took a picture of my son and I with the iSight. Paired the phone and the Macbook in minutes and sent the file. I'd assume that contact and calendar syncing work as well -- not sure about music/movies.

Like I said, though, the only problem is the camera. It's still VGA (A 1.3 MP camera would have been an easy inclusion); the picture quality is ok.

I thought about the Verizon SLVR, even held it for a while but ultimatly desided against. I like candybar phones and the VGA Cam wasn't a consern for me. That's why I have a reg. digital camera. I thought the keypad was way too 2005ish though and imo slightly over priced.

I'll take a SLVR L9 if it gets to Verizon.

Well I went ahead and got the KRZR. I love it personally, the looks, the feel. OK, Verizon's UI is downright fugly, but i'll look into modding/changing it later. (But it's still an upgrade from my LAST phones UI -- if you can believe it. It syncs with iSyinc perfectly, i can get all my pictures/videos off of it just fine. -- all through bluetooth of course.

I originally asked for the blue colored one, but they sent me this:

It actually looks really really good IMO, better than blue. Thanks verizon for screwing up in a good way!

Overall its an upgrade, and although it's not the best, i'm sure it'll suit me just fine.

So can you confirm for me (no need to admit to personal experience, if you don't like) that the krzr CAN, in fact, be seem edited to enable obex bluetooth tranfers?

Last I understood it, the razr could be...and my dying e815 was similarly able... if the krzr can also definitely be seem edited to enable obex, i'm sold on it.

Edit: I guess I ought to address this to you, too, then, Xander:

Do tell. Pictures and videos, you say? Does that work out of the box, or does that involve a bit of tinkering, too? And does that work for music, too?
Like I said, all I need to hear is that this stuff can be done on the krzr, and i'm convinced about it.

I'm also interested in how the KRZR works with iSync over bluetooth. Personally, I'm most interested in the calendar and the address book. Everything else is just icing on the cake.

Please update the list!

This is an interesting article from November of last year.

http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2006/11/23/business/NA_TEC_US_Digital_Copyright.php

Specifically

Cell phone owners will be allowed to break software locks on their handsets in order to use them with competing carriers under new copyright rules approved by the Library of Congress.

and

In granting the exemption for cell phone users, the Copyright Office determined that consumers are not able to enjoy full legal use of their handsets because of software locks that wireless providers have been placing to control access to phones' underlying programs.

Providers of prepaid phone services, in particular, have been trying to stop entrepreneurs from buying subsidized handsets to resell at a profit. But even customers of regular plans generally cannot bring their phones to another carrier, even after their contracts run out.

Billington noted that at least one company has filed lawsuits claiming that breaking the software locks violates copyright law, which makes it illegal for people to circumvent copy-protection technologies without an exemption from the Copyright Office. He said the locks appeared in place not to protect the developer of the cell phone software but for third-party interests.

What's more interesting is that Verizon (one of the worst offenders, in my opinion) has obviously realized that they'll still have to support these hacked phones on their network, and have apparently decided that it's just better not to block the features in the first place.

http://support.vzw.com/faqs/Bluetooth/faq.html#item9

If you click on either PDF, it'll show you what bluetooth profiles are enabled/disabled for each handset/PDA. Most of the newer phones (look at the product pages) do support OBEX by default for "user generated images".

Looks nice...I'm picking one up from AT&T(hopefully) to hold me over until the iPhone(and on the off chance I can simply update my plan when the iPhone comes out, I'll end up with both, if not I'm in the 30 testing period, so I can return the KRZR for an iPhone)

Hey, so I'm about to upgrade my phone (my old one's dying) and am wondering which of these is the best. The things I want the most are:

  • Small
  • OS X compatibility :)
  • Good Camera
  • Not Ugly
  • cheap (preferably <$100

My choices can be found here: Linky

I'm really lost when it comes to phones, I've heard some RAZRs are crippled etc? I really don't know so with these criteria, which would you choose/ which are best for me?

I'm also open to phones not on this list but they HAVE to work with Verizon.

In advance: Please no "iPhone" requests, ok?

My girlfriend has a chocolate, or whatever it's called. Pretty decent phone, but I've been so spoiled with my iPhone. I think the chocolate has what you may want in a phone and it's "cool" to boot...

Anyone knowledgeable still reading? Signal strength??

Same question; Mac OSX, currently 10.4 on an Intel Mini.

I'm (family plan) stuck with Verizon.

We have several old Kyocera 6035 Smartphones. As of last week they all quit picking up Verizon's signal on a mountain site where it worked reliably in previous years. I'd guess they went to more but weaker cell towers.

The 6035 has only a flimsy little test socket barely usable for an external antenna. I've had to solder the thing back onto the board several times.

Hoping someone knowledgeable about Verizon's current phones can comment.

Primary for me -- ability to connect at the very edge of the coverage reliably (line of sight to, but far from, the only cell phone tower in the area).

Are there _any_ cell phones nowadays that provide an external antenna jack?
For that, I'd change carriers and lose the 'family plan' gladly.

Take a look at Phonerated.com, they compile a list of the best Verizon phones. Their lists are based on many other reviews, so it seems like a pretty safe way to select the best phones.
