The best thing to avoid MLB blackouts on Mac, Iphone or Ipad is to use a full VPN. VPN is safe, secure and even not high in price, I personally have been using VPN for it and just so much satisfied with results.

As I said above and discussions with various VPN services, they do not work on iPhones or iPads because of location services. I've specifically emailed unblockus and unlocator and both have said that they don't work on phones or tablets. Maybe in a house where the wireless router is setup on a VPN service but not outside.

I would love to know a service that works with the iPhone or iPad?

Jailbreak and LocationHolic "Pro".

PIA has an iOS app for their VPN service - works fine to change locations for something like NFL Gameday for example...unless I'm totally missing your point.

I think it's app specific. The MLB app prioritizes location services over IP address when determining your location for blackout restrictions on iPad and iPhone. VPN's and DNS services work fine on Mac computers and the Apple TV but not on IOS devices with location services (GPS). Jailbreaking and location spoofers are the only thing I'm aware of that work on those devices to get around location services. Some apps, Directv for one, somehow check if the device is jailbroken and will not operate on jailbroken devices. I hope MLB doesn't go that far in the future.

Top 3 for me right now are PIA, AirVPN, and TorGuard. Had PIA but then the CA servers slowed to a halt with all the publicity they were getting with diff sites ranking them the best VPN, switched to TorGuard which worked great, but I want to try out AirVPN tons of people recommend it on /r/VPN. Might go back to PIA if AirVPN turns out to be sht.

If you loved at my previous post you can work easily at getting around that!

Did a lot of research before switching to AirVPN last year. It's been fantastic for me. They'll give you a 3-day trial if you email them. I did that before signing up.

I disagree. VPN is overkill for avoiding MLB blackouts, and degrades your speed. VPN is about security, anonymity, and obfuscation. I don't care if my ISP knows I am watching MLB, I don't care about having a secure connection to MLB, and I know care about that one packet that verifies my location being spoofed.

A SmartDNS is a much better option for avoiding MLB blackouts on Mac and AppleTV. It is cheaper, it doesn't make your connection slower because you still have a direct connection from you to MLB with no middle-man, and it's much simpler to set up.

I use Yonder.tv, which is $3/month. Works perfectly for MLB.

I use AdFreeTime, which is $1.99/month. Works perfectly for MLB.

A SmartDNS is indeed the way to go. My SmartDNSproxy offers VPN included in their subscription, but I never use the VPN part on my ATV4. Simply because I would have to choose a different VPN server all the time to switch from USA to UK, From UK to DE etc etc. SmartDNS does all of that automatically.

With SmartDNS your set up is real simple. Just change your DNS settings in your modem.

There is no best when in comes to a forum :)

Just be aware that with proxy services the destination knows your own IP... (eg Netflix, HBO etc)

How can traffic be directed to you on the way back if they didn't know this.

As above smartdns is flawless & free
It's a real no brainer

Which smartdns is free?

That's the whole point of a VPN.

If you're outside the US get a Turbo Beacon - www.turbobeacon.com - mine is working very nicely in the UK. I have access to US Netflix as all other methods to access US Netflix no longer work due to their blocking of VPN's and Smart DNS. Turbo Beacon uses neither DNS or VPN.

Although I use WiFi in public places all the time, I've always been apprehensive about it. For the past few years I've used a variety of VPN services (TorVPN, Tunnelbear, NordVPN, etc.) and each has seemed to work OK.

As my contract year with my current provider is ending, I've been reading about all of these services. From what I've read, none of them seems as secure as one might wish. The objective reviews talk about leakage, external servers not under the provider's control, possible adblocking malware, etc.

One techie based product is Cryptostorm and that sounds like it's pretty secure. But it's not a company; it's a group of techie's (many of whom post on github) who have cobbled together pieces of software. The configuration looks complex (unless you're knowledgeable about such things) and you still need to pay for and rely on a service provider.

Am I missing something or is this whole area rather gray? Are there any recommended VPN services out there that can truly be trusted, in terms of their software, services and security?

Just go with the most popular VPN's like PIA, AirVPN, or iVPN. I also use this chart https://thatoneprivacysite.net/vpn-comparison-chart/ which rates privacy/cost/operating location/speed or https://torrentfreak.com/vpn-anonymous-review-160220/

As of now, UnblockUs no longer works with Netflix and similarly no VPN that I know works either. If anybody is successfully using a service to gain access US Netflix, I'd appreciate to know.

DON'T subscribe to Privateinternetaccess with the intention of avoiding geo fencing. PIA have stated on their forums that they will not help in any attempt to circumvent geo fencing. So if the site you want to access blocks specific IP addresses or detects VPNs PIA don't want to know about it.
