Hi there...

I am trying to connect a SONY 40 inch KDL40V3000 (which is 1080p) to a Powerbook 15" Aluminium G4.

I am currently using a DVi to HDMI cable. The problem I am having is the picture either ends up smaller than the TV screen with a black border, or I get an unsupported picture.

I've attached a screen capture of my settings available;

I also have the problem that if I shut the laptop (when both screens are working) and wake the laptop with an external mouse the TV screen says its an unsupported picture! Aaaarrggghh...

What I am trying to achieve is to be able to use the TV as an external monitor with the laptop shut (clamshell mode). Mainly to watch movies etc

Any help gratefully appreciated
Alex

I have tried the overscan option, but I have confused myself as to which options I have tried with which!

Is it actually possible to do what I'm asking (use a 40 inch TV as a monitor for my powerbook, with the screen closed and have it fullscreen with no bits cut off and no black borders? using a DVI to HDMI cable?

If so what settings do I need to use? and are they on the TV or the laptop?

Could my powerbook be causing problems as it is over 4 years old and the graphics card may not be up to it?

Thanks
Alex

I have a similar issue on my core duo macbook..
it will display black borders around the screen using dvi/hdmi on my 40" Samsung 1080p TV

Only way I can get FULLSCREEN is by not mirroring displays.. but that's useless (for me) as frontrow won't work on that mode

If I use overscan then it cuts the top and bottom of the screen and still get black borders on left/right side..

I've even tried the SwitchResX software, but that didn't work either.. still getting black border when LCD is set in the Displays to 1900x1080 interlaced..

Is this a limitation of the core duo integrated graphics card?

On the Macbook specs, it says that as an external display it will support 1920x1080 :(

Its just annoying that like you, I cant get this to work either..

velcro. or superglue.

that's really helpful!!

I'm nearly there.... I followed this work around from the link below:

http://rtfm-nub.blogspot.com/2007/08/1080p-out-of-macbook.html

I now have a full screen 1080p picture on the TV. However.... the colour of text is a little off with yellow patches etc and also when I close the powerbook to use it clamshell mode the TV says that the signal is unrecognized? Any ideas for these issues?

Thanks for your help so far

freakin hell.. i now have a FULLSCREEN 1080p thanks to the above link...
I used their second method of extended desktop but dragging the toolbar from the macbook to the lcd extension (didnt know you could even do that)

Unlike you I do not have any yellow patches, but also I don't use it in clamshell mode (still get black borders for some reason).. I just keep the macbook lid slightly open and dim the screen all the way..
frontrow also works great on it ;)
