I have just downloaded Protube even though I was a little hessitant to pay for a Youtube client app, but so far after a few hours of use I've found it amazing, pretty good UI, and I finally have PIP. Really happy with the purchase.
I have a few doubts:
- What limitations does this app have? I've haven't found any yet

From what I've read, it caps out at 1080p (regular client seems to go up to 1440p sometimes), and doesn't play 60fps (not sure if regular one does this or not).

- Will youtube continue to allow this app to work, I started thinking that now that they are realising YouTube Red maybe they would want do delete apps with extra features?

I'm not sure that Google has any choice in the matter. If you have noticed, you can embed a YouTube video on any blog, forum, or any website. There is standard code that YouTube has released to make that so, and I would guess a very good percentage of YouTube views take place at websites other than youtube.com. I would guess that this app uses the same coding to reproduce the videos in their app. So unless YouTube were to shut down the coding for this, which would disrupt their whole business model, then the app should be safe.

I started using tubex, which is free, and so far it is pretty damn good. It supports PIP, split view multi-tasking, and a bunch of other features. It is also free. There are ads that occasionally display on the bottom, but so far it appears that the videos are ad free. It supports up to 1080p and you can easily change the resolution. You can also have it play the video only and play just the audio track. It also supports background playback for listening to tunes and whatnot.

So far I am very impressed. I am not sure yet what limitations there are, but subscriptions and things like that are supported. I'll post back if I find anything that is really missing, but nothing yet it seems.

Thanks for the answers, good to know the limitations. I still prefer those issues to not being able to use PIP, or having to request the desktop site each time I visit on safari

Hope that's the case, I use a lot of YouTube but I think the added value of YT Red at least for me it's not even close to worth it.

I have encountered a few videos (mostly music videos from media companies) that refused to play in Protube, giving some message about not being supported. But all other videos play fine.

Protube also apparently has some sort of quota (enforced by YouTube) as to how many shows you can stream at any one time, though I have encountered only once, and was unable to watch any more shows. The quota should expire after a while, and the developer assures that this should never happen under normal viewing conditions. It wouldn't go away though, and required a reinstall. The app was worked perfectly after that.

YouTube has gotten Protube to remove features before, namely the ability to download videos for offline viewing. I can't make any guarantees, but app should be safe for now.
