Dephibio, I am not sure I follow. The screenshot you posted shows mDNSResponder process but under it, it shows discoveryd. Which process is used in 8.4.1 beta? mDNSR.... or discoveryd? Can you help a less knowledgeable person? Thanks...
_mDNSresponder is the system's username under which discoveryd runs.

Sorry to be dense but I am still confused. I have read, here in MacRumors and in other places, that Apple replaced discoveryd with mDNSResponder in OS X 10.10.4, i..e, they reverted back to the old technology used in iOS 7 and in Mavericks because discoveryd was problematic with Wi-FI. I have also read that Apple is doing the same in iOS 9. My question is: does iOS 8.4.1 use discoveryd or mDNSResponder as the networking routine? Thanks... :)

Unfortunately, discoveryd is still being used in iOS 8.4.1.

As answered above, 8.4.1 still uses discoveryd. Every process in a unix-based operating system, like iOS or OS X, is assigned to a user. In the case of discoveryd, it's owned by the user _mdnsresponder (as is the process mDNSResponder in OS X) which is why you see that word in the list of processes.
Discoveryd on iOS does not seem to carry the same issues that it had in OS X in terms of causing loss of connectivity and renaming of devices on the network.

Many thanks to you and Dephibio for your replies. I hope iOS 9 (with mDNSResponder) improves connectivity with my iPad and iPhone. There is a huge thread on Apple's Community Forums regarding Wi-Fi issues in iOS 8 (iOS 8 Wi-Fi problems). Many posters state that these issues were not present in iOS 7. There are also many articles on the web and on various forums about this. It appears that there is a conflict (blamed by some on discoveryd) between Bluetooth / Air Drop / Bonjour which also affects iOS devices. In my own case I can connect ok but I cannot use Bluetooth. With it ON my download speeds come down to a crawl, under 1 Mbps. Any thoughts from you or Dephibio or anyone for that matter?

The following article may be of interest:

This is often due to radio interference between the Bluetooth and Wifi radios which both use 2.4GHz frequencies. Can you try switching your wifi to 5GHz?

You are right of course. I live in a house out in the suburbs with little interference from other networks other than my own (also my cordless phones, microwave, etc.). I have two APs to serve the house as it is L shaped. I can switch one of my APs to 5GHz and the problem goes away. However the 5GHz band has a far shorter range than the 2.4. I would have to buy more APs, all on 5GHz, to serve the house. This is doable but since I did not have the problem at all with iOS 7 I am hoping that iOS 9 resolves it. Also of note, my rMBP and my 2 Dell PCs work perfectly with Bluetooth on or off, somehow there is no conflict with those but only with my iOS devices. Others who have posted on the Apple forum report the same.

Wonder if beta 2 or release will be today...been two weeks since b1.
If they need a second beta for a x.x.1 release then it BETTER FIX EVERYTHING.

It wouldn't surprise me if they have a team of two people working on iOS 8 now that iOS 9 will be out in 6 weeks. Apple shifts focus away very quickly. All the Apple apps in the store (ibooks, remote, etc) have teams of literally one or two people who make these apps. Which is why they get updated once or twice per year typically.

you may be right..no new beta today..so we shall see a final release this week or next monday
Or there will be a wait for Apple to implement a security fix in 10.10.5 for vulnerability made public last week and add it to 8.4.1 before release.

so..what's the difference?
Generally "shall" means something will happen (in a sense that there's at least something indicating that it will happen), "might" or "could" means that something can happen but might not happen either (in a sense that there's nothing in particular to indicate it one way or another).

whatever :) i don't understand but you are always complaining the threads / replies about the iOS rumors / speculations.. what can we decide in here? is it false to macrumors traditions? :)

rumor / speculation or whatever you say is the main article of this forum. So it's natural to decide these situations.. don't complain about that anymore. ;)

It's about presenting information based on what it is. If there's something new to indicate something being more or less likely, then it can certainly be presented that way. If it's all just continued guessing and speculation without any new information that supports it then it should be presented as such. Not really complicated, just basics of written word, given that's really all we have to go by in places like this.

I hope this release at least addresses the slow wake on Air 2 and the random Safari crashes on my 6+, but that might be asking too much.

Re: the slow wake, I've reported it twice to Apple since 8.4 was released (once after 8.4 and once after 8.4.1 b1) and included stackshots which they asked for. Both times it was closed and marked as a duplicate of another open report (the same one both times). It seems they're at least aware of it, but nothing was done from 8.4 --> 8.4.1 b1 so we'll have to see from 8.4.1 --> b2/public release.

I really appreciate that you've reported it. Thank you!

Do you think we might see a b2, with at least some release notes?

A b2 is a possibility, mostly because it doesn't appear that they've accomplished much at all with b1. Then again we don't know what the goal of 8.4.1 really is...

8.4.1 release notes: We're working on it
