Any naming suggestions cannot be more than one word. If it's not Portrait or Bokeh, then it needs to be something one word.

It's moot anyway because Apple has already chosen the name.

I get the portrait versus landscape argument since they are defined by the camera orientation thus far.

But a portrait picture of someone, for me, is a picture that 'focuses' on that person as the absolute center of objectivity.

Although this mode can be used for a variety of subjects, Apple's intent is probably using portrait mode for people as the subject.
 
I get that, but has Apple provided images of anything other than head and shoulder shots? If not, who's to say that Apple intended for it to be used for anything else? Not saying that it can't or that it shouldn't, but if Apple only intended it to be used for head and shoulders than it's a perfect name.
Considering most selfies are taken with the front facing camera as you can see exactly what you're snapping a picture of, I'd say it would be used for non-portraits the majority of the time. After all, how often do you take portrait pictures of other people?
 
It takes excellent portraits. So they named it portrait.

No reason you can't take a portrait of an object.
