Beware the WD MyBook Studio 2TB External HDD

The VCD can be disabled easily with software you can get from WD's site.

The SmartWare software exists on the controller card, not on the drive itself. You're not losing any storage space to it (or so I'm told.)

I can disable it for the machine which is plugged to, right? If i plug the drive on a different pc/mac SmartWare will start again and i need to stop it again..

Yet another reason I don't ever buy anything western digital (not to mention the entire office here at work full of dead mybooks.)

I have 12 of WD MyBook 2TB drives in heavy use for video production, with no failures or trouble of any kind.

I have another 16 WD MyBook 1TB drives, again with no trouble.

No, I don't like SmartWare, but I've been using MyBooks exclusively since 2009. No problems.

I looked at this thread for some info. Mosts is dated, i.e., 1 TB Studio's. Mine is the 2 TB model. I've had it about a1 year and am having to RMA it. I've had problems with it since buying it.
Have had great experience with WD in the past……

I'm guessing that WD will replace it with same same. Hopefully NOT same problems…..
