I think I hit peak iPhone with the first gen SE. I wouldn't even be using the XS if I didn't need the storage. I read though each iPhone rumor article, and I have yet to find a single reason to upgrade. No matter how hard I try, I just don't care about new cameras or faster data.

Considering the new SE, I think it might look like XR with a current CPU. So most likely single rear camera and 1st gen face id/camera module. Or maybe 11 (non pro), depends on when it gets released. For more expensive variants, the logical next design step after the finally manage to ditch the notch is a cutout front camera design or maybe even camera hidden under the display. I mean, what else can you do with phone factor from a minimalistic point of view? Unless they go retro and start adding back buttons :)

I don’t believe anyone will ever overcome materials endurance limit problems sufficiently to produce a foldable, monolithic display. Some materials tolerate the application of reversing stresses better than others but all known materials eventually succumb to it and fail. Unfortunately, the failure is always sooner rather than later. Such tech is the analog of the holy grail of energy, cold fusion, and it is likely to remain thus.

The flip side of the problem though is the lack of a compelling use case for foldable displays. Certainly, it would be nice to have access to more display pixels but wouldn’t a wirelessly connected pair of video lenses be a better solution? This solution would certainly be less limited than merely doubling the effective display size, especially with nascent 10G wireless technology just a year or so off.

I doubt the 2022 iPhone will have hole punch camera and other radical design features. The 6 design was kept for 4 years. The X design for 3. I doubt that the design of the iPhone 12 will have a 2 year lifespan.

This line of thinking is not entirely complete.

iPhone body design with rounded edges/sides was on 6,6S,7,8/X,XS and 11. That makes the rear case design used for six years.

If we are talking about the front case/display then it would be 6,6S,7 and 8. That makes it four years.

iPhone X,XS,11 and 12 makes it four years.

Your numbers may need to be adjusted as the case modification (front/rear) deviated with iPhone 8/X.

The front case/display is due for an adjustment this year.

At this point the current design reached its limit. You can hide the notch, make the cameras better, faster 5G but you are stuck on the same puny screen. A headset with a display is most likely the way out, some kind of augmented reality wearable aka MS HoloLens. Until then, everyone will muck around with "features".

First, nice article !

Second, the ONLY thing that will make a dent in iPhone Unit Sales is the addition of Under Glass TouchID !

Nothing else listed will move the needle !

Intel is right, Apple is a Lifestyle company ... in other words, it has a NON-technical User Base.

In other words, they will ONLY care-about a very obvious benefit (to their life), such as Under Glass TouchID.

Everything else is just icing on the cake.

I think Apple is in trouble.

BIG trouble in Little Cupertino, in fact !

In other words, how are they gonna promote Tech Benefits to a NON-Tech Audience ?

No doubt, they are in BIG trouble !

IMO, Apple's Mgmt screwed-up years ago by NOT promoting third-party Engineering Accomplishments.

If they had done so, their customer base would now be much more technical.

NOT Rocket Science, Tim Cook & Phil Schiller, who apparently "still" runs the App Store, need to go !

Jony Ive’s dream of getting the iPhone to be just a sheet of glass seems to be getting closer every year. Will be interesting the day we don’t even have a hole punch and the camera has advanced enough to operate under the display with a clear picture

Apple is just fine.
No one buys iPhones because of what they have, they buy them because of how they work, and that will continue.
To the average consumer, the iPhone has barely changed since the X. And clearly, they’re still buying them, the average consumer doesn’t really care. They’ll buy the latest phone when their contracts are up.
Or, they will buy whatever phone their carrier offers them with an Apple logo on it.
They don’t care if it has a notch, or a hole punch, or a telescope zoom, or three cameras, they honestly couldn’t care less. They just want a phone that works and will last them a good long time, and that’s what every iPhone has done.
The iPhone 12 series is on track to surpass the iPhone 6 series as the best selling iPhones of all time. The millions and millions and millions of people who are buying iPhone 12s would be able to hold onto those for a good 4 to 5 years, and then when they’re ready to upgrade, the iPhone 17 or whatever will be waiting there for them.
In short, Cupertino is not in trouble in the slightest

This is such a waste in thinking about it. Apple has already mapped out its next several iPhone and features and costs they want and how to get the most money. It’s business.

If they really were thinking about what the needs are of the users then the iPhone 12 and iOS would have already addressed the face mask problem with either Touch ID under screen or side button Touch ID.

I'd argue that some people definitely do care about all those things; it's just not everyone. Every 3-4 years I buy Apple's low-end phone. I prefer iOS over Android, but don't care as much about the hardware or how it looks. I'm perfectly fine with the current SE.

However I do appreciate all the people who throw lots of money at Apple for their high-end phones - that pays for the hardware R&D that goes into the new SE every four years. 🤣

Pssst. You could wake some fanboys...
They believe that Apple really cares for them and only wants their best (well, they do ahahah).

Like with all the other phone makers and other companies: It's just business and the only thing that counts is maximum profits. Some do that better, some not.

If apple can sell their customers the same stuff over and over again, they do. If they can be behind and just catch up with android and sell it as the "new innovative thing" and people throw money at them, they will do that.

And yes: The Android phone makers do the same. They just look what sells well. It's business after all. Nothing more.

In fact they make me think that Apple actively keeps us in the past because it's to their best interest to keep milking existing tooling than fast track new designs (people still buy them in droves so why not).

Nothing mentioned in the article is unheard of or groundbreaking in the industry.

You don't say, Lol! Who would actually think that Apple were in the business of making money 🙄🤦‍♂️

And we appreciate you buying overpriced & out of date hardware,..with huge profit margins, to keep the latest tech for us going 😏

Well it isn’t going to be the same CPU. The CPU is going to be A15 Bionic Chip.
