During Google's sting operation only 12 out of 100 fake strings actually showed up in Bing's results so what's most likely happening is that Bing crawls Google's search results. I wouldn't think that is uncommon honestly.

Google and their AdSpam is just awful ... we need real search engines to enter the market again.

Microsoft goes at it again; can't innovate, copy. Where is the Microsoft that lead the market, not followed it?

I tried using Bing for a while but eneded up going back to Google. I think Google's results are better and Google Instant is pretty nice.

It's been said each search engine monitors each other and uses that it has at least a teensy influence on results. I too would not call this behaviour uncommon.

I use Bing because I much prefer the results. The funny thing was I preferred Google results when I could see the site, but then in blind tests hands down I chose Bing. I don't like Microsoft in general, but Bing (stupid name aside) is awesome.

    You guys are dumb.
Bing sees that when people search for a certain term, they are likely to go to the "honeypot" website. Since Google engineers used the Bing toolbar and opted in to giving Microsoft info, they're searches and clicks were logged. So, as it should, it moves these results up in its ranking algorithm.

I dont see how that is copying... Its rather doing what they all should do, trying to get the best results out.

I guess the guy who collected the data is as well. Have you even read the article?

Speak for yourself. How does a user installing a MS toolbar give MS the right to copy Google's search results? Doesn't MS have to seek Google's permission and not the user's?

In any event, MS answer to this is weak -- it's clearly trying to deflect criticism by downplaying the importance, but what is clear is that they are doing it and only disagree with the claim that their activity constitutes "stealing".

If Google also does it, which is alleged but not confirmed, then it is incredibly stupid for them to make a fuss over MS doing it.

Did I read the Fox News article? No. I read far more knowledgeable articles.
Just as Google uses your data when using their services, Microsoft uses yours. You opt into it after all. In this case Microsoft uses it to provide better search results. Clever if you ask me.

It's not copying anything. It's ranking sites based on the data collected from users who opt in to providing their collection data.

Do you really think Bing is searching terms like "hyppbrqac" on Google and seeing what their results are and adding them?

Being a clever doesn't make a thief not a thief.

MS responses are very telling and do not remove any suspicion (for me). Perhaps MS should come clean and explain exactly what information in the "clickstream data" is being passed to them and used as 1 of 1,000 ranking factors. I suspect they won't though... and that too is telling.

Btw, you seem reasonable, but why in the hell do you start your argument by insulting others?! That's embarrassing...

Jumping to conclusions before even looking into something to the slightest is dumb, plain and simple.

And for Bing, I would think it has something to do with this:
    Watch users searches.
Watch users click choices for the search
    Feed data into algorithm.
    Update Bing search results.

When Bing first launched I tried it out and decided its results weren't as good as Google and went back to Google. Now I actually have it set to my default provider in my main browser, Chrome. I feel the results are on par and sometimes better than with Google and I feel like they deserve my business as they have been leading the search enhancements lately and they have also saved me (given me through bing Cash Back) $500 on my last laptop purchase.

Google has done much more copying from Bing then Bing has from Google. (Besides being a search engine)
Googles image search has copied numerous features, its page preview, sidebar, and its main page image.

Programmers at Bing (MS) may be researching on google search results but copying results from Google is something they can't afford to do openly

    Bing copies Google
Microsoft copies Apple (copied from Xerox)
    Egypt copies Tunisia

    WHAT'S THE WORLD COMING TO?
