Just finished DAO and I'm trying to decide what to play next. Bioshock 2 has obvious play-me-right-now appeal, but Fallout 3 (which got lost in my slow-going gaming cycle) has been waiting around for a while.

I'd say Fallout 3. By the time you're done with Fallout 3 and all the expansions (which are bundled now) Bioshock 2 might be cheaper. Fallout 3 is an excellent game. Bioshock 2 probably is also (Steam is downloading it for me right now) but it's new so there will inevitably be patches. Unless you have a bunch of friends you're itching to play the Bioshock 2 multiplayer with, go with Fallout 3 Game of the Year edition or whatever they are calling it for now.

Definitely Fallout 3 due to price. It is a massive game, whereas Bioshock 2 will likely be quite short like the original, and the multiplayer will be me-too crap. Also, replayability on Bioshock is pretty limited, so you might as well wait and get a better value.

Fallout 3, but make sure you get the one with all the DLC. An outstanding and well crafted game on a giant scale.

Fallout 3 is incredible - and huge! I've already played the game twice just to try and find all the stuff I missed. :)

    Can't wait for New Vegas

I played Fallout 3 on Steam on my MBP and BioShock 2 on my 360. I'm not all that happy with BioShock 2. It's a lot of the same from the original, which is a masterpiece. Fallout 3 was fantastic and absolutely massive. If it were BioShock 1 vs. Fallout 3 that would be tough.

I'd play Dragon Age Origins or Borderlands before picking Fallout 3. If you are intent on apocalyptic scenery, Borderlands. Note, I loved Oblivion, the game Bethesda made before F3. F3 just did not click for me.

Borderlands over Fallout 3? That is interesting ... did you play Borderlands on PC or console? I found Borderlands quite average at best, and obviously console-centric and very dumbed down on PC ... and not remotely a RPG, which at least FO3 was.

Nobody should play Fallout 3 without playing the first two games beforehand. There I said it.

Borderlands is more fun if you play with friends. Playing solo is fairly boring as it has little to no (good) plot. It's all about getting guns and blowing stuff up. Dragon Age Origins is pretty difficult but a good game. Although you might wait on that one until it's packaged with all the DLC.

I've never played the first 2 Fallout games and enjoyed Fallout 3. I probably didn't get a joke or reference here and there but that's okay.

Most RPG sites fairly well exploded back in 2008 due to the fact that Fallout 3 was very weak where the original games were strong (writing and story and characters and humor) and the VATS was a joke compared to the original turn-based system.

Fallout 3 is also made by the folks who made the game that is absolutely reviled by the hardcore RPG crowd: Oblivion. So the very thought of 'Oblivion with guns' makes PC RPG traditionalists barf up a lung.

What does any of that have to do with the topic at hand? I played a lot of Fallout 2 and all I can say is FO3 is a damn good game on it's own merit. Different, sure, but that doesn't take away from the game as a whole.

Nothing at all - someone mentioned the need to play Fallout 1 & 2, which caused someone else to ask for context, and I was merely stating that very often folks who are serious fans of the originals are the same folks who hate Bethesda and everything they've done since Morrowind.

Defiantly Fallout 3! I love that game. It seriously is fun and if you are concerned about the price you can get it pretty cheap online/eBay.

I never played 1 and 2 so maybe I'm missing something, but I have a hard time getting into FO3. I play for a little bit and then turn it off and don't come back for a day or two. Most decent games glue me to the chair for hours but not FO3.

I loved Fallout 1 and 2, but it's been such a long time since I've played them that I can't remember much at all about their plots.

I do remember that, on my second playthrough of Fallout 2, I went through the entire game (with the help of a trainer) and killed every single NPC (with a few unkillable exceptions such as children). That was good fun, even though it sort of ruined the plot.

I can't believe I used to have all that free time.

Fallout 3 if you want a good, long, single player RPG/FPS.

Bioshock 2 is very fun, pretty much just like the first one. The single player won't keep you going for too long though. Dunno about the multiplayer, haven't tried it yet.

Borderlands is very fun if you have 3 other people to play it with, but it's just a mindless lootfest.

Fallout 3 is by far the most "RPG" of all of them. I put 65 hours into it with 3/5 of the DLC in two playthroughs (DA:O took me 55 with all of the DLC on one playthrough, one of the most fun games I've played but I don't think I could take a second playthrough at that length). Although it can be pretty short if you skip the extra stuff. But I'd recommend it for sure.

p.s. I didn't play the first two Fallouts either...
