I bought one of these for my wife during the kickstarter, it was the biggest POS I've ever bought. It never functioned AT ALL. Don't waste your money.
 
Can this thing be on a separate Wi-Fi SSID than the iPhone that gets the pictures?

I always put devices like this on a special WiFi network for IoT devices so if they get compromised they can't infect my primary network.

Yes, because the bird camera basically operates through the Wifi connection to BirdBuddy’s cloud, and the app on the phone interacts / downloads from it.

That's how IoT devices now "should" work but amazingly there are a lot of devices that continue to rely on simple broadcast messages on the same local network to see the IoT device. My Onkyo Audio Video Receiver for example can only be controlled if it is on the same local network as my iOS devices.
