I use this Satechi adapter which I got for around $20 at Microcenter, and it works perfectly and is a good fit against my MBP.

I personally like that I can use it on either side of my MBP. Same with charging. Many times I use it in tight spaces, so instead of dealing with static ports and a charging port on just one side (which leads to dealing with cords that get in the way), I get some flexibility. May not mean much to most, but it was a surprise pro coming from a 2015 MBP.

He has every right to be disappointed at the direction that Apple has taken. After all, unlike in the Windows world, there is only one maker of MacOS products, and that is Apple. Now my take since I am only a visitor to Apple and MacOS, Windows machines are my preference, but I keep Macs to stay current with all tech for my professional needs, my answer would be to try Windows. There you can have what you want, except MacOS.

OP, I do not understand your predicament at all. Your post is illogical. One possibility is that you did not understand the features available on your new computer before you purchased it. If you did not understand what you were purchasing, then the problem is yours... why are you disappointed? If you understood the features on your computer before you purchased it... why are you disappointed that you received what you ordered?

Do you see the dilemma? You have framed your post illogically.

In my opinion, it would have been more logical for you to frame this post along the lines of “I really miss the following features”, and then list them. This is most certainly not Apple’s problem. They designed a device and you purchased it. Ultimately, whose fault is it that you purchased a product that is not Apple’s best offering?

This said, like you, I miss the charge indicator. Unlike you, I like the USB slots and have found that a dongle, while inconvenient, works just fine.

Joe

One possibility is maybe don't make ASSumptions about people or their situations simply because they are venting frustration about a problem they just discovered with the newest macbook pro. Not everyone lives on these forums like some of you, jumping at the opportunity to be rude and insulting to someone who was simply voicing criticism about an apple product.

SD slot was on macs for couple of years, before it had expresscard. (my good ol' 2008), then they removed the expresscard and added an SD slot which benefits practically only photographers and nobody else, and audio guys (that were adding their own FW chipsets because of compatibility issues, or eSata ports for fast external storage) were pissed.

Then they removed it again and added 4 high-bandwidth ports that can transform into practically anything.

You cannot make a machine that caters to every need and is small and portable and has great battery and great durability and great future proofing and all legacy ports and whatever the hell people on these forums want.

having 4 high-speed ports means the machine can cater to most of people at the very small cost of some convenience.

Else you'd need a photographers MacBook, a videographers MacBook, an audio producers MacBookm a developers macbook, a businessmans Macbook, ... ETC.

People will always find something to complain about. The way MacBooks are done now (and if USB-C stays as a standard) they can be moulded to fit any specific need, which I find great, because I don't care about LAN, SD, DVI out, standard USB or any other stupid port on a portable + I can add these ports in any tech shop 15 minutes before i need them.. (which was quite literally the case when I needed an HDMI out urgently).
It was much harder to get hold of those stupid MDP adapters.

Except Mac OS and an amazing touch pad.

Another benefit to me with how they've moved to all thunderbolt ports is I no longer need to use Apples power cable. Every single Apple MBP and MBA power cable I've ever owned has fallen apart. Now I can use much better and cheaper third party options.

In December 2016, I purposely chose to buy a (just discontinued) 2015-design MacBook Pro instead of the new 2016 model (with only USB-c ports).

In the 2+ years that have elapsed since, I've not yet had the need to connect to a single USB-c device (I have none).

The SD card slot has come in handy a few times.

Fearless prediction:
For the NEXT 2 years, I don't think I'm going to need to connect any USB-c devices to the MBP, either...

Particularly not 4 devices right? I think the TB3 ports are great, but 2 would have been fine. End up with 2 being blocked to use a Satechi Hub in order to add the missing ports anyway.

Edit: I take that back. It has a passthrough, so only missing 1 of 4, but I also gain a semi-permanent appendage.

As it happens, today I am appreciating the versatility of being able to plug in the charging cable on either side of my MBP; for a few days I've had to move it from its usual workstation to another location in my house, and due to wall outlet locations and such it is very convenient to be able to plug the charging cable in on the right-hand side of the machine now.

As for having four ports, I would not want only two on the machine, as one would out of necessity be used at least some of the time by the charging cable, leaving only one port free for other uses. I definitely have used three simultaneously: one for charging and the other two for swapping data back-and-forth between external drives. On one occasion I actually had three external drives plugged into the machine, plus the charging cable, while doing some file-and-folder reorganization and swapping. At the moment I don't have an external monitor so having a port free for that has not been a concern yet.

I love my new 2018 MBP and the power this thing has, the speed....it runs circles around my 2015 MBP. If eliminating the glowing apple and the Magsafe with the charging indicator light and the SD card slot is part of the price I have to pay, well, I'm all for it!
I never noticed but these fans really blow a lot of air through the case. You can actually feel the air movement. My other machine never did this.

I was thrilled to be bought the new 15" 2018 MBP for my birthday last September but the joy has been somewhat tempered by the lack of features I've come to love.
For a start I couldn't much with it until I went out to buy an adapter for all my peripherals, USB port but mainly the SD slot!
I am a wildlife photographer and the SD slot was a very important feature for me. I've just been on holiday and forgot to take the bloody adapter with me!
Another annoying missing feature is the charge indicator - now we have to open the lid to see if its charged.
Not your best offering Apple!

You can sell it and get what works best for you.

Are you doing video editing? Just curious, as the fans on mine have never turned on. Not even during the re-install of macOS.

They are barely noticeable. I have to hold it up to my ear to hear them. But I can feel the air flow through the slots.

Ah. Makes sense. I’ve all but forgotten that mine even has fans inside, and that’s with multiple terminal windows going, docker, a few other random things such as browser windows, my IDE, etc. it seems like you have to push these newer machines pretty hard to get them to ramp the fans to full speed.

Not the i9/560X.
agreed for 13" and possibly (i don't know, conjecture from reading forums) Vegas.

My other machine would start the fans going at start up. This machine is so quiet I can't even tell when it sleeps.

The best part about 4 ports (for me) is two screens at once, and the ability to run my ssd at full speed.

Why Apple decided to neuter the ports on the LG UltraFine is beyond me.

They must have changed the design for the Vegas. My 20 has been super quiet and not hot at all.

They did, it has a different heatsink and logic board, and some members reported 10 degrees lower temperatures for the same configs.

Yeah, I’ve read the same re: i9. I thought that was fixed with an update though? Maybe not. Mine is the hex core 2.2.
no, only the initial throttling. they still run hot. Fans were on all the time.

I will say I do miss the power light on the front and the battery charge indicator lights.

You get a bunch of legacy ports that will be obsolete in 2 years tho. Yay

Last I looked, Jan 2019 USB C is still more of a esoteric than a standard. By the time it becomes standard this Mac will be on the "vintage" list given how Apple does things, and the fact that the so called benefits of USB C don't out weight the cost of the peripherals means that most people will continue to use the current tech.
