So, I found a store that actually had one (even though they thought they were out) and got my business discount. Can't complain about $1,899... :) I think I can live without a Nehalem model for 43% less money.

cancelled 2009 order

Hope you guys are right about getting this for $1899 as I am a sole proprietor, I just cancelled my order for a 2009 quad. Called and my local store which has a 2.8 octo they say they will "put back" for me. Business guy won't be there till Monday morning. This is going to be a long weekend

I just got the discount a new machine and applecare. I got the impression the discount applies to anything they'll sell me. I'll ask my rep next time I talk with him.

On current items the discount is usually 5% with a biz acct. They are giving a much larger one on the 2008 base model 2.8 only I believe, perhaps to get rid of stock. Discount is $900 off the regular price before the Nehalems came out.

GREAT post, guavadude!

I followed your suggestion ... an hour and a half later I am at home with my new 8x2.8 for $1899. even bought the apple care, partly out of appreciation for how easy it was. tres cool

btw, the biz rep couldn't have been nicer.

now to place an ad for my trusty G5 2x2.5 ... served me well for several years.

Was the biz rep there on a Sat.? My local store said I won't be able to see one until Monday.

I was able to get the discount as well! $1899 was too good to pass up. I bought one of the Western Digital drives Barefeats said was good to use as a fast startup drive and 8Gb of ram (4x2) from OWC. Total cost... $2317 with tax here in California.

They wouldn't give me much, if any discount on the new 2.26 Nehalem. So I figured the difference was about $1200 after tax which would buy a nice monitor :)
I'm going to wait for the 4870's to come down in price before upgrading the graphics.

man, i wish I would have found this thread before I placed my order through amazon :( good deal for all that got in on it though. hopefully if I ever upgrade around the time apple is transition to new models, I can jump in on this deal again.

Worked

Walked into my local store this morning and walked out with a $1899 2.8 mac pro....sweet! Tried to get a discount on a 30" ACD, but no go. Finally, some good luck. Many thanks to original poster on this.:D

For those who got the discount, are you able to do any customizations such as graphic card upgrades, or are you allowed only the base model with no changes?

no changes, since you are buying what's there in stock. It's my understanding that the custom ones are special order only.

No changes. But as I understand it, you wouldn't be able to make changes with in store stock anyway, even if it was a 2009 new model. Changes can only be made online through build to order.

**Word to the wise, the airport extreme card for the Mac Pro is no longer offered by Apple as single item and can't be ordered through them anymore. It is available through other authorized Apple internet stores. I ordered mine from B & H. You have to install it yourself though. Apparently, all the old cards that didn't sell in build to order options in 2008 got put into the new 2009 Nehalems.

Thanks for the quick responses, guavadude and Cameraman12.

Aahh, I wasn't aware of this. I've only bought online in the past so I've always assumed that custom configs were also available at Apple locations.

My local apple store quoted be $2399 for the 2.8 I asked about the fact the other people had purchased for 1899 and he said he had no idea what I was talking about. Oh well guess I will wait a while and pick a current generation one.

Same here, I called the West 14th Apple Store and the 5th Ave Apple Store in NY.

I was quoted that too, but when I asked about the business discount he looked into it a little bit and said, "Oh yeah, you're right."

I called all around LA, but they were all out. BUT, I found one outside of LA and they will ship to me for free. So try calling any store in the country.

Apparently, every Apple store has a "business partner." Thats the only person who can give these business deals. If you talk to anyone else they will look at you funny and have no idea what you are talking about.

I was talking to the business partners over the phone. He explicitly said the discount would only be applied to businesses with history in that apple store and the discount is no more than 8%.

Dude Your so full of it, I went to the apple store with my dad and he used his business discount on a macbook and we only got $200 off a $1700 computer with tax. Oh and what ever fake industry you claim your in, your not getting that kind of discount. Want to know what company my dad works for? Viacom, the one that owns Paramount, MTV, VH1, BET, Nickelodeon, Logo, Dreamworks! So I think they would probably get a bigger discount then your one man operation. Stop lying to the reader!

They Buy new top of the line workstations from apple every year, So your repeat customer thing was shot full of holes as well.

Who exactly are you talking to and what is your challenge?

And try to speak in a more civil tone, "dude".

It just depends on what store you talk to. I had one guy tell me that same thing--that you had to have a "business history" with them. Then I finally found a guy who gave me the deal.

Usually employees don't get the discounts, owners of business do. Unless your dad owns Viacom he wouldn't get the big discounts (or at least the person who is in charge of buying the computers for Viacom.)
I have a small photography business that I own but my work is seen around the world. I have to say, Apple treats me like gold. First class all the way! If I ever need anything, I have the direct line to my business partner. He's great.

Was that guys name "frank" that mentioned the business history?

Has anyone tried this in Canada?

There aren't many Apple stores, but if you have one near you, give it a shot.

I could only find one 8x 2.8 in stock on any Canadian online retailer, and it was still $2899.

I'm sort of kicking myself for not buying a refurb in November for $2599. I kept thinking "I'll wait till the new ones and decide then", well the new ones are here, but the old ones are gone. All the ones on eBay are in the US and are therefore more expensive than the new Mac Pros.
