I'm having the weirdest bug with OneDrive for Mac. This is a OneDrive issue, but it's also a Finder issue, and so I thought posting here would be helpful. If I duplicate a file that's in my OneDrive directory in the Finder (Command+D), I then can't rename the file in the Finder. If I hit return it won't give the ability to rename. If I "Get Info" on the file, under "Name & Extension," the filename is greyed out and can't be renamed. Is this a permissions issue somehow? I can rename existing files but can't rename duplicates. Anyone else seeing this?

Hmm, never experienced that before with OneDrive or just in Finder in general. As you can see, I can't replicate the issue:

Have you tried rebooting? You can also try resetting OneDrive:

Rebooting doesn’t help and it’s happening on both my computers. When I try to rename the files within Microsoft Word, or PowerPoint, I get an error message that says I don’t have permissions. But when IWhen I try to rename the files within Microsoft Word, or PowerPoint, I get a error message that says I don’t have permissions. But when I checked the permissions using “get info”, the permissions look fine, and I have read and write access.

Try resetting OneDrive on one of your computers based on the instructions I linked. See if that fixes it on that computer.

I'm having the same issue. Any file in the OneDrive folder structure that I clone with File/Duplicate then cannot be renamed either by clicking or with File-Info.

Update: i tried to duplicate a duplicate and that triggered a login request that would not accept my credentials and failed but it did create a duplicate copy that also could not be renamed. Not helpful but just showing that something really strange is going on.

I suspect that this is all happending because those files in Onedrive are not the actual files but are links to files stored in /Users/username/Library/CloudStorage/OneDrive

BTW - Copy and Paste will duplicate the file without these issues.

Same issue here. Does anyone have a link to any Microsoft information about the issue?
I tried the copy/paste workaround, but it only works if I paste in a folder outside of the OneDrive folder hierarchy.

I am experiencing this identical issue as well. I can rename other files synchronized previously by OneDrive to my Mac, but if I copy / paste a new file, let it synchronize with OneDrive, I am not able to rename the new file. Very frustrating.

Maybe when I do the copy/paste it works because it hasn’t had time to sync? Though using Duplicate is just as fast and I can never rename those files even right away. Maybe there is a degree of randomness or just dumb luck. 😊

I hope that Microsoft issues a fix for this soon.

Unsure. I just went to SharePoint, renamed the previously created file, let the new name synchronize back down to my Mac via OneDrive, and I still cannot rename the file. Super strange.

I got fed-up with weird behaviour from Onedrive on both iOS and MacOS so I've uninstalled it and am now just using iCloud Drive. So far, so good.

I started having the same issue a few weeks ago. The workaround I found is to open the duplicate file, do a Save As... in Microsoft Word, then delete the original duplicate. Still, after just being able to do a Duplicate-Click-Rename for decades, this is really annoying...

BTW, this issue does not seem to be limited to Microsoft 365 apps: I just experienced the same problem with TextEdit. The common thread is OneDrive.

Yes, likely an interaction between OneDrive and the new way that they need two work with Apple's new way for cloud file services to store files.

I have had good luck doing a copy+paste and then renaming the file. I haven't had any problems with that though some here appear to have.

Same issue here. Only affects files in OneDrive folders. Copy/pasting the file to a different folder, renaming it there and then moving it back seems to work fine though.

Same here.
Funny circumvention: I use Explorer in a virtual Windows 11 running under Parallels on my Mac to rename new files in a OneDrive folder on the Mac (I don't use OneDrive in the VM), that works immediately. After a day or two, I can rename files like normally in Finder.

Same issue for me, the files are locked from renaming for a while, then sometimes even within half an hour I can rename like normal.

Same issue here.
We have E3 licenses.
Duplicated Excel file (Command-D in Finder) stored in OneDrive path is unable to be renamed.
Workaround was to open an old file in Excel and then 'Save a Copy'.

I just tried again today and it seems to be working. I can use Duplicate and then rename the resulting file.
I'm using OneDrive Version 23.107.0521.0001 on an Apple Silicon Mac with latest Ventura.

this can be fixed by setting umask to 077.

sudo launchctl config user umask 077

for all previous file just reset file mode to 700.

chmod -R 700 <path>

Still seeing this at 2023/06/15.
MacOS and OneDrive updated to latest version.
System rebooted.
Can't rename a copy of a file in OneDrive with Finder.
Can't rename the copy with Office application either.
BUT, it can be renamed via command line 'mv'.

Copy/rename files not in OneDrive folder works fine.
I guess it is a ridiculous OneDrive bug.

Hope it gets fixed soon.
