In response to Intell, I do regularly use my macbook with an external display. However two days ago I completely erased my hard drive and reinstalled Snow Leopard from scratch without connecting to my external display at all and the black boxes are back.

That's becuae the GPU isn't affected by a reinstall. Once it has been slightly burnt it will always be slightly burnt. I asked about the external moniton because when you use one you're asking the GPU to work twice as hard as before and therefor more likely to burn out.

Maril1111,

I don't know if the screenshots will be enough but I suspect they will be. When I went to the Apple store the guy wanted to connect my mac to an external display to see if it is a hardware or software problem. He said if it shows up on the external display it is a hardware problem, if not it's a software problem. I told him there's no need since I know it shows up on my external display at home.

Now, I received my macbook back today and the notice said they actually didn't replace anything, contrary to what the Apple genius told me. All they did was to reinstall the OS (with Leopard, not Snow Leopard) and do "extensive internal cleaning." So far after installing Snow Leopard the problem has not appeared yet but I've only been using it for a couple of hours. I really hope I did not pay $300 for nothing. I'm actually pretty confident that the problem will resurface since they didn't replace anything, unless it was so dirty inside the computer that it was causing the problems.

pazimzadeh,

I send it in for repair and I am still waiting for an answer, I found a guy who does repairs for me (in dk) so if it's a logic board problem he would replace it for me...

I'll write an update ones I get info from the service
