It's more likely we'll see a base MacBook or 13" Pro for $100 off than any meaningful discounts on the MacBook Air. It's selling well and was just released.

Last year, when the iMacs had just come out (and were selling like hot cakes too), Apple had discounted them. The discount was basically equivalent to the EDU discount, but if you already had access to the EDU discount, then there was no real difference (since the two wouldn't stack).

I would expect a $50 discount on the air on BF.

I wouldn't be surprised by it. That said, the Apple Insider deal at MacMall expires on Thursday, so I'd rather go for that. It's the old "bird in the hand" view.

My rewards credit card is offering 8 points per dollar at the Apple Store for the whole BF weekend so I'll be waiting until then to buy my MBA. I am still trying to figure out if I can apply my government discount to that purchase, or if it will have to be made through a separate Apple store specifically for my credit card.

If I can somehow get government discount + BF discount + 8 points/$ I would be a very happy camper. :)

Don't count on it. The Government discount is the same as the EDU discount and they don't stack with the BF discount. Also if your credit card has a special Apple site, its probably an EPP site which offers a better discount than the BF/EDU anyways.

Yeah, I'm not really counting on it, but it's worth the wait to find out. I'm more concerned about getting the points when I buy through the government store. When I follow the links to the store through my rewards site it seems like it takes me to the regular Apple Store (as opposed to some card specific site), so I'm guessing the points will be applied when they see a purchase from Apple Inc., which should be the same if I buy it through the government site.

It's actually in my card's best interest to let me buy it with the discount - smaller price equals less points. We'll see.

The rumors always exceed reality here for Apple Black Friday and people get their hopes up each year, always to be disappointed. I've seen on this site a page that collected the discounts from the last few years, but I couldn't put my finger on it to copy and paste it here. But the last few years the BF specials from Apple have been $101 off on a couple of the basic models. The $101 discount basically got you the same as the edu discount. The MB Air was not included last year, and if I had to guess, you won't see it this year. Based on the past, if you qualify for the education discount, and need something now, go ahead and pull the trigger; if you don't already qualify for the edu discount, and need a basic model, wait. But remember you'll be paying tax, so if you can get a good deal online, and not pay tax, go for it.

I didn't read the whole thread, but if anyone hasn't seen it before, MacRumors has tracked Apple's Black Friday discounts going back to 2002:

Well there you have it. You can expect Apple to discount some low end item that nobody wants to buy such as a Macbook with the hopes that when they set foot in the store to check it out they'll be swarmed by sales people who talk them into buying a sexier looking and more expensive full priced machine.
