Apple is pop culture. Its just like Britney Spears, she sales millions more records than say Keane or Kings of Leon. Yet her music sucks, but she appeals to the masses for some weird reason.

One word: Palm.

I'd short RIM. Sure, some business enterprise users will stay on due to loyalty, until they are fired in the next few years.

Again: this is Palm all over again.

It could just be that the rest of the tech-buying public are less obsessive than Apple users and so less inclined to spend 24 hours queuing outside a damn best buy.

Or maybe no-one cares :)

Pop culture? Not sure about you, but most of the people I know with Macs and iPads are over 35. I could care less about image. My most important feature for any electronic device is functionality. If it doesn't work, isn't supported, then I won't buy it. I tend to think anyone that works for their money think the same way.

Agreed. RIM is in trouble. They may try to get enterprises but a lot of the users want to go Apple or Android and over time that will happen so they are going to lose enterprise market share.

The only way RIM can survive is to try to go into the consumer space but that is not and never has been their niche.

So I am not sure what they do. Maybe keep their form factor which people seem to like and put Android on it since it's free.

Dont really care for the playbook since it has no mail etc. And its just 7".

Hower the fluidness of the os and the multitasking is ****ing awesome. They nailed it. it looks and functions so good with the bezel swiping.

Would love to have that on my ipad

This. I too was amazed at how smooth everything felt in the OS when I demo'd one at BB. They really did a bang-up job on polishing the user experience for the first iteration of the PlayBook OS. I've tried many a Android tablet and they all seemed pretty laggy due to the OS, regardless of hardware specs.

I've never owned anything BlackBerry related before, but if the iPad was out of the picture, the PlayBook would be by far and large my tablet of choice. It's just a pleasure to use.

For me, the HP Touchpad looks like it'll be the best overall rival to the iPad.
The software looked pretty cool, in January, it should be sweet, come the summer.
I like how it's also the only other tablet, to be in a 4:3 aspect ratio, which I think is the ideal compromise.

We started getting these at work and I amazed what a waste of time it is. The thing isn't much bigger than my EVO. It cannot connect to a BAS. It only gets email using that bridge crap to a Blackberry. Google app isn't an app...it's a bookmark to the page, so basically you can't get any email on this thing unless you have a Blackberry.
Why on Earth would RIM come out with such a device. I dont get it. Who comes out with a tablet that can't compete.

So people over 35 don't listen to Britney?

I would hazard that someone "alternative" who is too smart to buy the iPad would listen to something a little more edgy - say, Justin bieber?

Ipad is a great toy and thats why I own it. Lets say you go buy one expecting to get home and use it as your only device. But you have to plug it into a computer and you still have one. So you plug it in, then sell your computer. A week later an update comes but you can't get it because you don't have a pc anymore. Change the the device to a playbook or android tablet and you are ok. You can check and send emails, download music, search the internet and you never need a pc/mac. The ipad is the most amazing toy in the world, and I love it.

Says the person with all his Apples products list in his sig

I would get a playbook if I were a blackberry user. I like the idea of a seamless officially supported tethering between the two devices. But I am not a blackberry user...

Coming from someone who has a iPhone, iPad, 3 macBook pros, MacBook air and a Mac pro I really like the playbook. Got it for the wife so she can watch her movies (in flash) online while at work. The screen is very nice and the speakers are loud, clear. The size is just right, not to small for viewing and not to large, she can throw it in her purse and go. If it was not for the AppStore I would prefer it over the iPad at least until Apple comes out with a 7" version. :)
