Quite the opposite for me. Slow but consistent BBM spams.

0 iMessage spams. Well, maybe 1, but it wasn't that good.

"BlackBerry is taking advantage of reports of iMessage's vulnerability to spam messages to tout its BlackBerry Messenger app..."

Which barely anyone outside the world of corporate luddites, uses any more, due to RIM's inherent failure to keep up with the market.

Genius move. Really...

I too have never had spam, but it is clearly a problem for some people.

There are additional steps you can take if you're really worried:

- Never give out your primary Apple ID email address. Create at least one other email address and use that to register with all the various web sites you interact with.
- Never give out your real telephone number. You can easily create a Google Voice number and forward calls to your real number.

I've found this very effective as a means to block out a lot of the spam I *do* receive - chiefly marketing phone calls when crappy companies sell my information to marketing partners.

Give it up, Blackberry. Crawl back into your grave, it's over.

So you're saying they should just ... I dunno, close shop? Maybe they could liquidate the company and give it back to the shareholders. Because the market has spoken. Surely all companies listen to the market, right?

Coming up next (I'm not joking):

Microsoft revive "MSN Messenger", re-brand it as "Windows MCE Mobile LiveZune Skydrive Messenger" and launch it in all the usual places...

:D

People claiming they've never received spam on iMessage are the same people claiming they go 3 or 4 days between charges on their iPhone.

Can you quote a few of those people that have posted both? Thanks.

It's a pattern, on the MR forum.

Actually the feedback on many forums (including Android-biased boards) and news outlets has been that there hardly has been any iMessage spam received - so yes, obviously people would post their similar experiences on Macrumors as well. Quite logical... one would think.

Not a bad read either (but you probably will have your issues with the source - and their readers too ;) )

Bbm

It's cross platform? Cool! That means I can answer messages from my iPad and MacBook and Mac mini anytime now just like iMessage. ;)

Well i understand your point but BBM has these features now and is cross-plattform.

Show me BBM for Mac, and I'll show you...

I have had spam the last two weeks, as have my ice and daughters on their iPhones. I think I've gotten three messages, and they have gotten about the same. One of my daughters was with her softball team when they got an ad and everyone else (I think it was actually iMessage and Android devices which got this) got similar ads within ten seconds.

The thing is, you get a spam message, and you just delete it. It is annoying if you are on a limited-SMS plan and have iMessage turned to SMS-only, but the volume is too low to worry about at this point.

How is the BBM paradigm of you get a "Let me send you a message" request and accept it (because you don't know if the person on the other end is someone you legitimately want a message from or not since there are no message contents in this initial inquiry) followed by the same spam message any better? Seems measurably worse, IMHO. At best, it is "different" but definitely not any better.

Looking at the study, 30% of spam on iMessage seems lower than the percentage of iPhone users, at least in the US. I'm not sure why this is surprising. As I said above, spam messages are hitting all messaging providers, and BBM's technically-not-spam approach provides no protection at all.

I don't like the word "architected." I've never heard it before and it sounds bad. It's probably grammatically correct but I am terrified it's going to become a corporate buzzword. More than don't like I absolutely hate it. Please God let it die here.

What in the Hell are you talking about? It's a word. In the dictionary. And if you worked in the IT world you might hear it 5-6 times a day.

... Although I have to admit, this was pretty hilarious lolol

Funny, except for the fact that the return phone number on the original spam SMS was probably forged (i.e., the guy who owns that phone number suddenly started getting this other guy's made up life story for no reason at all).

You do realize SMS return addresses can easily be forged, right, and that the spammer intentionally does that because if they were using real numbers those real numbers would quickly get banned by the phone companies?

To everyone who says they don't get spam, good for you. I'm happy for you. You're lucky. But that does not mean the problem doesn't exist. It does. It's annoying. And apple has provided very very very little support to users that are affected to fix the problem.

Six spam messages over three months is hardly even up to the level of "annoyance". You click one button and they are gone (well, slide then click). I have seen the same happen with SMS on Android (which makes sense when you note that 30% of spam on close to 50% of active devices isn't exactly iMessage getting more than its fair share of this spam).

Personally, I've gotten three messages in the past couple weeks. A little more than you, but I don't find it annoying really (although I don't have my phone set up to become annoying every time a text message comes in).

Smoke signals are better.

Lol. I chat with like 50 people via imessage or SMS if they don't have apple. I doubt out of 50 any of them use BBM. And I am not going to ask them to use it just because Blackberry said so.

I do like this smoke sign idea though. I wonder how far it can be seen. And I think syncing might be hard too, ask them to be outside at the exact time.

There's an encryption method available for the smoke; it's called wind :p
