I think you will regret it later on if you go for the older MacBook. The fact that you want to play any games at all should be enough for you to instantly chose the new MacBook.

Also, according to many owners, the new MacBook runs noticeably cooler than the plastic ones do.

The new Macbook every time. I am also surprised with so many BlackBook recommendations.

The smaller/lighter body, more FSB, new multi touch trackpad, LED screen, and significantly more powerful graphics (which will matter in a couple of year with new OS and software).

Another big reason is resale. In a couple of years you could sell a Aluminum MacBook for more than a BlackBook. If you really are considering a BlackBook, you'd probably be better off saving $200 and getting the base White MacBook new.

I just sold my old blackbook and got the new AL one, so it's probably obvious that my advice is to go with the new macbook.

Pros:
-As for speed, I do notice a bit better performance (my blackbook was 2 yrs old though).
-The aluminum casing is far better, I don't know how anyone could say otherwise. I had an aluminum powerbook G4 for a couple years and with a little care, it still looked new. The plastic macbook however, will degrade.
-The back-lit keyboard is a real plus.
-It's maybe just 1/2 a pound lighter, but it's noticeable
-the larger trackpad size is a real plus
-the screen is marginally better
-it definitely does run cooler (and looks cooler)
-I pretty much stay in my house, where the wifi signal is strong, so I can't really say which of the two is better when the signal is weak. But I do find that from the time you open up the new macbook, until when your wifi is connected and you can surf, is faster in the new macbook.
-it's also about perception, ask yourself what's the resale value of each macbook 2 years from now? The new macbook will be higher for sure.

Cons:
-loss of firewire (you may not care)
-the new trackpad button clicks sometimes register wrong for me (i.e. if a lazy extra finger is down on the pad it may register as a right click, or no click at all. It happens pretty seldom, and I bet it will probably improve with driver updates.
-yes, there may be some build quality issues or kinks to iron out. But I ordered mine the day they were announced and I'm having no issues so far. So it's not like all the new macbooks are coming out junky. I think you're safe to rely on the warranty to take care of any real issues.

Bottom line, I agree that you will be kicking yourself later if you buy the "old" macbook. Just about everyone perceives it as old, and you haven't even bought it yet!

When I use my old blackbook (it is mainly the wife's now), it does feel like stepping back in time. I can't stand not having my multi-touch trackpad, backlit keyboard, and aluminum unibody. I didn't know what I was missing before getting the glassbook.;)

You are right. I should of used a better word to describe it. As I said in my above posts, it is stupid to buy ANY regular Macbook for real gaming. It wasn't made for it. Old games and some current games are OK, but not great. My friend has a new one and it runs some alright, but not nearly great. Buy a gaming machine, maybe a Macbook Pro( way, way, better than the integrated graphics of the Macbook with a good screen) or desktop for real gaming.

Everything in the new macbook is better than the old plastic book. Construction (that alone warrants not even considering the blackbook), screen, FSB, graphics (yes, iPhoto is way faster on the new one), trackpad, access to HD, lighter, thinner, cooler...etc. etc.

Recommending the older macbook to newbies is just cruel.

no the older macbooks did not have bad construction. they also have firewire if you need it

and its cheaper...

last rev BlackBook or first rev MacBook. Which is more reliable? Which has the problems known and sorted?

I didn't say the older had bad construction. It is just the fact that the aluminum macbook is vastly superior in construction and sturdiness to the plastic macbook.

I guess ONLY if the price and FW are a concern for the OP then he might consider an old macbook. Other than that there is no reason whatsoever.

oh i agree, if you can swing it, get the newer one but the old one is not badby any stretch of the imagination

I'd recommend the last rev old MacBook over the first rev new MacBook precisely because he's a newbie.

If these MacBooks are anything like the last round, I wouldn't want to subject a new Mac user to all the rev-A hassles...

I love for the plastic MB. After dealing with my first Rev A Apple Product (Original Macbook), I vowed never to do so again. I now have a 2.2 white macbook and love it. Not much gaming here tho.

Get the black macbook, You don't see many people with them. In the future it might bring more money with collectors, just like some of the old iBook g3 clam shells in diferent colors.

Get the new one.

I have an older Blackbook. I hate it when my fans rev up every time I watch a youtube, cnn, bbc, flash video.

I am not sure but I don't think that the new Macbooks have this problem.

I Think from the general agreement of this forum that I will be going with the new unibody 2.0 GHz macbook.
P.S.-While my account isn't that old I have been coming to this website for close to 3 years and while this might be my first mac I know quite a bit about them.

Cool. Congrats!

I am going to suggest you get the new aluminum MacBook, but im not going to tell you why. Once you purchase it and open it up for the very first time you will know exactly why you bought it.
