This is awesome! I'm still rocking an Apple Watch Series 4, so I really hope this is true - even if it's just the first implementation of BP monitoring. I'll definitely be upgrading!

I upgraded my AW7 to a 9 this year for the bigger model, but I would trade up for blood pressure monitoring. I turned 50, and not only is my eyesight diminishing (hence the bigger model), but I was also put on a low dosage of blood pressure medicine. Gone are the days these devices were just a fun gadget.

In a report covering the arc of Apple's heath-related ambitions, Gurman outlines the first iteration of the company's "pathbreaking" blood pressure sensor technology coming next year that will include hypertension detection:
A future version of the system in development can provide exact numbers and even diagnose related conditions, according to Gurman. However, these enhancements "remain far off," he adds.
so trend, not values, not very useful ...
but, consider the source

"The system is designed to just tell a user if their blood pressure is trending upward"

I did some research last year on wearable blood pressure monitors. So far, the only one which exists (and is approved as being clinically valid) is https://aktiia.com/uk/blood-pressure-monitor.

It comes supplied with an arm cuff which is used regularly to calibrate the watch.

As Gurman guesses, the new Apple watch can only work out whether blood pressure is increasing (or decreasing). It's like those fat-percentage scales - they're not at all accurate but they are consistent so can usually report if values are increasing or drecreasing.
Yep. I expect this is going to be "accurate" insofar as it's consistent. Which is still a tremendous value if it can tell you your blood pressure is changing, but it's not going to replace the cuff tests at the doc's.

Mark my words: if this is true the story a week ago about the Ultra 2 potentially not being updated in 2024 is false. If these new features for blood pressure monitoring and sleep apnea are added to Series 10 there surely will be an Ultra 3 with them also. That said I think there is a decent chance that Series 10 will be the much rumored redesign of the watch for the 10th anniversary with a bit of a different look (will never be round!) and a new band connector design for the first time ever... because of this I wonder if Apple feels the look will be the sales point and saves the blood pressure monitoring and sleep apnea detection for 2025, if only to spread around the features over the lifespan of a design (3 years per design change.)

If the watch gets BP monitoring, and it's reasonably accurate, it will be a game changer. Insta-buy upgrade for me. High BP is a silent killer and an indicator of so many other illnesses, in some cases an early indicator. Thankfully mine is OK, and I plan to keep it that way. Regular monitoring is important. Ambulatory monitoring, such as with the watch could be even more revealing.

If these rumors are true, then it would be a wonderful upgrade from Series 8. Though if Apple manages to get the glucose monitoring system right, I hope it would give some insight to those that are borderline/pre-diabetic as well. My family history of being borderline is very worrying so any information that I can share with my doctor is greatly appreciated!

And with the cost of the future iPhone and Mac, that blood pressure monitoring will come in handy😅

So let me see if I got this right. According to the latest rumors, the standard model will get these rather significant updates, and the Ultra will remain “as is” for 2024? Also there will be no Mac updates before the end of the year. 🤔

🤷‍♂️

My biggest wish for AW10? Same battery life as the Ultra. As much as I like the Ultra features I am not a runner and really don't like the looks, but would like to have the battery runtime and screen size. I bought the AW9 aluminium GPS+cellular but would gladly pay extra for the steel version if it had more battery life. if AW10 gets it with a not rugged look I will strongly consider the upgrade, I really love the look of the steel series.

Nevertheless I can get more than a day on the current AW9, just by disabling raise to wake and enabling AoD. That really made a great difference, I am getting around 30h with 20% left.

Sleep Apnea detection would be great if I didn't have to choose between wearing the watch during the day or through the night due to battery life.
You can actually get enough battery life from an Apple Watch to wear daily and to sleep. I normally get around 18-20 hours out of mine, and then charge around 9pm. Overnight, the watch uses around 15% leaving plenty for the day (I always make sure to keep the screen off during the night...it saves battery life, and also my marriage ;-).

Measuring BP is complex. If Apple decides to include such a feature, we'll see what the FDA has to say about it.
Keep in mind that the current Apple Watches cannot even reliably measure body temperature. They estimate "wrist temperature" variations. The Blood Oxygen measurements are off; they roughly estimate... the fit of the watch band, and a cheap finger pulse oximeter is way more reliable. I don't believe for one second that Apple has found a reliable and energy-efficient way to estimate blood pressure.

I don't believe a thing Gurman says beforehand.

Me too, not now from him or Koh, both have been wrong multiple times now and more so recently. Apple is keeping secrets. The only watch like device I've ever seen with blood pressure monitoring had an inflatable wrist band and air pump, I seriously doubt an algorythm will replace that.

Great, knowing that my blood pressure is rising, but not knowing how hight it is rising — is going to make my blood pressure rise even higher!
And then you get home and put the cuff on and see the exact number of how high it really is, and your pressure rises even more... If you are this anal then its only yourself to blame, you have to get that under control.

Hopefully these rumors pan out as either or both would be incredible on our smartwatch.

How many people monitor these things? They'd sell a ton more (both as upgrades and as new users) as a side effect.
