No they aren’t, but that is Apple’s own doing. Chrome and Firefox are not allowed to implement their own renderers, so instead they are just wrappers around a webkit view (which is Safari’s renderer.) Those apps just exist so that you can use their respective syncing services on an iPad, the web browsing experience is either identical or worse because of limitations of the webview Apple provides.

Apple needs to open up the iPad if they are interested in it becoming the future of computing. This would be a small first step, but a welcome one.

True. And I hope Apple doesn't ease the WebKit requirement because Chrome sucks. As in, literally sucks inordinate amounts of battery and processor power.

I’m plenty happy with safari on iOS. It’s macOS where I’m having trouble finding an alternative to Chrome, where safari’s UI leaves much to be desired.
It’s more about what your used to, all browsers, well, browse. I’m happy with Safari all around. Try chrome a bit, Firefox, edge; just different to match their own hi style, but not really any better. But I suppose, there are lots, go with what you like

I really only want this for the music app. I'd choose Spotify as the default app. Safari is the best browser for iOS since all browsers on iOS use the same WebKit, so added functionalities are limited. It'd make no difference for me to have a default mail app because I already just use what I want to use - there's no difference in functionality by having one or the other as default. I also prefer to use Apple Maps, so a default alternative app wouldn't affect me there.

The only issue with mail is that email address links don't work if you've deleted the Mail app. When you click an address you get a popup that "Mail isn't set up on this device" or something ridiculous like that.

Safari is insulting, if you use it for facebook then great for you, but as a browser it should provide tons of other functionalities, also, you may just download social media apps and be done with a browser. Only a moron can defend Safari in it's current state.

I love Safari, use it daily on Mac, iPad, and iPhone, and never have an issue. Guess I'm a moron 🤷‍♂️

100% agree. This is one of the most frustrating user experiences of the iPhone imo. It's one thing to require Apple Maps for OS specific links if you require the app to stay downloaded, but another if you allow users to delete the app and have no viable workaround. Every time I click a map link in contacts/messages, I get a message to restore maps and then just drop whatever I was trying to do and chalk it up to a loss.
That totally doesn’t happen to me. Are you on latest iOS? I go to contacts, or notes where I saved a map link and press, opens smooth as can be

if you are honestly having this problem, more specifics might help

Serious question, is Chrome or Firefox better than Safari on iOS? I feel like Safari is the one and only web browser on iOS that can do everything and is the best already
They’re all the same browser. Chrome and Firefox are just safari wrapped in a different skin. Apple doesn’t allow other web rendering engines on iOS.

I absolutely agree. The ability to use custom plugins in Firefox on desktop for example is a big deal, which prevents me from using the iPad in a professional capacity.

The only stock app I can really see myself replacing is Apple Maps, with Google Maps of course. Since most mail apps have a slightly similar look, I'm often confused when I forget that Apple Maps is the default app that opens and wonder why I can't get to street view. Its only a mere flash-second, but it would be great to just have Google Maps be the app that opens when tapping on an address in Contacts, for instance.

However, I've never really tried most other apps (email apps, media apps) precisely because you can't set them to default.

Apple's media syncing for those who meticulously tag and organize their library into playlists is HORRIBLE at syncing. Duplicate playlists, album work often won't sync to certain albums for no apparent reason, etc. I like Apple Music for streaming, but don't like iCloud Music Library. The cloud stuff has invaded the music player in a negative way for those of us who prefer a local-only library. I would love an app with a similar interface with no cloud features, other than Apple Music streaming - meaning no cloud library features.

However, for those who use Gmail, or Google's ecosystem, that would be a huge win, to be able to replace Apple's stock apps with Google ones like Gmail, Chrome and Maps would be huge.

Using 3rd party web browsers on iOS is a joke anyway. Cruel one. They're all required to run WebKit so they all render webpages exactly the same. There's no difference except in the skin.
One of the driving forces pushing iOS users to upgrade is Safari updates. If third party sources were allowed to provide a browser that was actually different than Safari- then there'd be a less compelling reason for the user to update the OS -- which apple desperately wants us to do.

I thought mail was already possible. I have deleted the mail app from my iPhone and been using outlook as The only mail app for a while, think since iOS 12

It's about damn time. Add Music, Calendar, Notes, and Maps to that list.

There's ZERO technical reason for Apple not allowing third party apps. They monopolize because they can.

Don't give me crap about "privacy". I should be able to use MY services on MY device the way I see fit.

If you click on an email link in an app or browser, you're automatically taken to Mail, not Outlook.

I get the feeling very long term this might not turn out well for end users. If Apple makes this change then Chrome will grow to dominate even more so than now. The Safari user base will shrink away to nothing. Apple will spend fewer resources developing Safari because of its disappearing user base. More people will move to Chrome. And the cycle will keep repeating until there is only one viable player in the market, Chrome. And in the end that will be bad for end users.

Yes, exactly! This will in the long run ONLY benefit Google and therefor hurt competition and in the end be a bad thing for the consumer/user.

This is utter nonsense. Chrome is already far and away the most used browser—Safari is but a blip on the browser market share radar already...being able to set it as one’s default on iOS/iPadOS will have little impact on it. Nothing is preventing users from currently using Chrome...just means web links will automatically open in Chrome. Most casual users already just use the apps that are already loaded on their iDevices and this won’t change. People who have enough technical expertise to know better already probably are using different apps is that’s what they prefer.

While like some I’m skeptical Apple will make this change...and I hope the ability to set different default apps isn’t limited to only browser and mail app...this is one of the remaining changes I’ve been hoping Apple would implement. I use Apple hardware for just about everything, with a few exceptions, but prefer many non-Apple apps and services (Spark email, Fantastical, Google Maps/Waze, Google Play Music) and would love to be able to set them as my defaults on iPhone/iPad.

Great...now when are they gonna do this with virtual assistants? I'd dump Siri for Google in a heartbeat. (And yes, I know you can sort of do this already, but it's clunky AF.)

It already is the future of computing. Opening it up puts all of us at risk who specifically have avoided or left the Windows world. As I have always said if you don't like it then use a different product. No one is forcing anyone to use their products.

Then are 100's of millions of morons including myself who use Safari everyday without any issues.
The only people who care about making default app selections make up .000000000000000000000009% of the iPhone/iPad owners.

Unfortunately, there is a high risk that is what would happen. And if Apple expand it to Maps, the same thing would occur.
If Apple Maps is better why would users change to Google Maps? If however Apple Maps can't stand on its own merits, then why stay with Apple Maps? Same as with Safari. If Apple cannot show and convince iOS users that Apple products are superior, let the market (users) decide.

You're not allowed to implement your own browser, you have to use the "webkit api". It's basically all safari, except third parties used to be crippled by not having certain accelerations/api available.

2.5.6 Apps that browse the web must use the appropriate WebKit framework and WebKit Javascript

One of the reasons I use Firefox is because some websites in safari never ask to save passwords when signing in and with Firefox it does.

Lately I have enabled map error reporting with apples map app. I have submitted several errors but never heard back. Also use Waze and they have reporting feature too.

AND MUSIC PLEASE

I had an apple music trial for awhile, it was crazy convenient to have the "play" button in my car actually launch the app if it wasn't already open. I use Amazon Music now and have to unlock my phone to load the app before my car buttons will work.

Ive worried about this but then I remembered that Chrome is much worse on iOS and the desktop version of Chrome has become bloated and ram hoggy IMO. It crashes a lot. Chrome devtools are what keep me using it.

Given the various unfixed issues with Mail on IOS 13 maybe they realize (hah!) that forcing people to use craptastic software and unrealistically crippiled products elsewhere might not be a good thing for PR over the long term. Now if they'd just make it easier to customize the home screens and join the 2020s.

.... oh sorry, I just had a daydream there. Sorry 'bout that!

Edit: Maybe they're trying to get ahead of, if not stave off, new anti-trust attacks from DOJ/Congress? *shrug*
