Doesn’t work.

An iPhone (without sim) cannot use FaceTime or iMessage. An iPad can. This is a huge advantage for a young child you don’t want to have a sim yet, but you do want the ability to keep in contact with. Stupid Apple decision.

The iPhone only needs a valid SIM to use FaceTime and iMessage; it doesn't, as far as I know, need an active SIM. Any valid SIM (that is, any SIM the iPhone isn't prevented from using due to a SIM lock), even one that no longer has service associated with it, should work. And once the iPhone is activated, the SIM can be removed and iMessage/FaceTime will still work, just (of course) not with a phone number.

I really hope they at least update the A series chip. As a doctor I need a mini because it fits in my coat!

I've seen some doctors with 10" iPads and pencil. It would be nice if a mini revision would get thinner bezels and pencil support.

Be careful about holding a wireless device against your body for extended periods.

Be careful with that iPhone in your tight pocket.

I'm just here to also defend the mini line! It's ridiculous that Apple leaves all their small factor products to slowly die!

The iPad mini is the perfect iPad for article and book reading. Try holding a 9.7"+ iPad in portrait mode, with one hand while commuting and then you'll also be a mini believer. But then again, I guess apple seniors don't commute...

iMessage sends an sms to activate, its a silent send so user doesn't know

Another mini defender here. Anyone who thinks it is useless has obviously not owned one. It is the PERFECT form factor for certain uses, that the large phones and the full sized ipads are not good substitutes for!

Point taken, though I see children being given iOS devices as a problem. But that’s for another thread.
Everything in moderation. I agree that kids shouldn't have unlimited access, but having an iPad for the kids and limiting what they do and when they can do it is not a bad thing.

Why not just keep your old iPhone without a sim card as an updated iPod touch for the kiddos?
Because there's a clear difference between a screen that's a few inches tall and an iPad. If screen size didn't matter, we wouldn't be having this conversation because a 9.7" iPad would be fine.
