iPad Pro 2021 - USB-C

Now, iPhone (2023) will be on the list. That’s just funny.

Now that we’re actually gonna get a USB-C iPhone, I can’t imagine Apple will try to go full-portless for several years to come, if ever. I’m sure we’ll get super fast charging along with data via USB-C. Nobody will want to switch from that by buying a new cable that only works with iPhones and a select few other accessories.

It’s clear that Apple wanted to leap from over USB-C to maintain their grip on proprietary charger (MFi) licensing fees. I’m glad they failed.

Gurman confirms what Kuo says when he is going to confirm the low-cost Apple tv?

So can you specifically back up your claim why lightning is ‘less likely’ to have issues with the ports versus USB-C? That doesn’t make much sense to me.

USB ports loosen over time as they require friction when it’s seated to make the connection. That’s why a light tap of the cable will see it disconnect and reconnect. The “male” cable is actually female, and purposely built to be less rigid so it wears faster than the exposed male USB chip inside the “female” port. Lightning was built specifically to be very rigid, to hold an iPod upright in the vertical docks where it replaced the 30-pin. It’s over-engineered, and it’s far more reliable.

I’m curious how iPad users have liked or disliked type-C as a physical connector (ignoring speeds, features, etc.).

Some comment they don’t like the physical connector.

How have iPad users held up? Would you want to go back to Lightning?

USB-C is just fine.

Apple says so themselves by readily endorsing it in everything else where they've chosen to use it instead of Lightning. A chunk of this crowd tends to have passionate arguments FOR whatever Apple has for sale now. That tends to evaporate as soon as Apple actually makes a switch. As soon as iPhone rolls out with USB-C, some of the same anti-USBc people will evangelize the greatness of the change... possibly even poke at the relative uselessness of the old lightning forever-after.

See the same before & after from firewire to 30-pin to lightning. This change will be no different.

Go try to find the defenders ripping Apple for NOT using Lighting instead of USBc in threads about other Apple hardware. You won't find much of that. So, generally, where Apple is using USBc now is good/great/best choice and where Apple is using Lightning now is good/great/best choice. When Apple moves, opinions move just as quickly.

I had to swap out some cables to make the change but haven't missed lightning one bit. If anything, given the broader compatibility with USBc among Apples own hardware mix, I reached a point where I no longer needed to always carry 2 cables. Hopefully, the accessories quickly join this party so that one cable can finally "rule them all."

USB-C has internal clips that hold the cable and connector together when its plugged in. Its very much the same as lightning in that regard.

This will probably end up being the Betamax vs VHS situation where there are technical benefits to the former that are completely obliterated by the ubiquity of the latter.

and finally when all the whiners get their beloved usb-c port, they’ll drum up something else to complain about.
No company, including Apple, has your best interests at heart. It's their job to pursue what makes them the most money, otherwise they're not maintaining their fiduciary responsibility. The circle diagram of "what's best for me" and "what's best for Apple" does overlap, but for the portions that don't, no one is going to represent what I want other than me.

So hell yeah I'll complain. Loudly. I'll also compliment. It goes both ways. But I absolutely refuse to "love" something unconditionally that can't love me back.

Apple’s cables are notorious for fraying and they still haven’t put out more reliable ones since Lightning was introduced 10 years ago, but people are saying Apple sticks with Lightning because it’s more durable.

I understand that those are two slightly different issues (Apple’s cord covering vs USB-C connectors) BUT if durability were the concern, wouldn’t Apple have released a more durable cable of their own?

This will be the perfect transition from my iPhone X next year. iPhone 15 Pro Max 256 GB, here I come!

I think what they're referring to is the physical connector portion that goes into your phone, not the cable itself. The lightning connector clicks into the iPhone and sits quite securely. I've yet to use USB-C on a phone, but if it is anything like on the PCs I've used, they tend to be wobbly and feel fairly loose when connected.

When it comes to cable strength they certainly do have a lot of room for improvement.

It was downright ridiculous to watch them talk up how great USB C is on the new iPad Mini, then quietly ignore that fact about the supposedly even higher end Pro iPhones with the exact same SoC.
The initial move to USB-c, talking iPad Pro here, was because the bigger screen combined with the faster processor exceeded the capacity of Lightening and if Lightening was used the device would use power faster than it could replenish power.

What I also like about USB-C is that it allows your smartphone to receive input from wired keyboards, mouses, USB-hubs, USB storage devices, etc with many cheap options available... I believe that this is not really possible with Lightning (with a few exceptions).

This website is generally full of Apple diehards, fanboys/girls and enthusiasts/loyalists so no wonder they'll buy into whatever Apple says and does as Apple can do no wrong in their views.

If Apple can use USB C in their other devices, it can put it into the iPhones.
Make is so for the 2014 models!

Apple is indeed testing iPhones that are equipped with USB-C ports instead of Lightning ports, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Apple does not plan to make the switch from Lightning to USB-C until 2023 at the earliest, with this year's iPhones continuing to offer a Lightning port.

We first heard about a potential swap to USB-C from Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who earlier this week said that Apple was planning to abandon the Lightning port in favor of a USB-C port in the 2023 iPhone 15 models.

There have been endless rumors about Apple adopting USB-C ports over the years, especially after Apple started using USB-C for the iPad lineup, but so far, Apple has stuck with Lightning for the iPhone.

Apple may be planning to swap because of legal requirements that could be implemented in Europe. The European Union is working on legislation that would require Apple to use USB-C technology across its product lineup, on iPhones, iPads, and AirPods.

All devices sold in Europe would need to have a universal USB-C port should the legislation be passed, so Apple would need to ship special USB-C iPhone models in Europe or simply make the swap to Lightning worldwide.

USB-C ports would allow for faster charging speeds and quicker data transfers, plus it would bring the iPhone in line with the Mac and iPad models that already use USB-C.

If Apple does transition to USB-C, Gurman says that the company will come out with an adapter that would let USB-C iPhones connect to accessories that have Lightning ports.
