I can justify why the first gen models didn't get it (no physical redesign) but not doing it now? I guess the upside is I know there will be no temptation to upgrade so soon!

Not a huge deal, but makes no sense to me. I can't imagine why it is so difficult to get the same technology that has been around for 3 years now into their iMac. I do always appreciate Apple not throwing something in that is half baked, but this seems like something that should have been worked out a long time ago.

Exactly my thoughts. Seems like a significant overhaul is coming to the iMac (finally), and its also the perfect product for Face ID, something that will be 4 years old when the new iMac likely launches. I don’t get it.

I find it humorous when people assume that the world's largest company somehow overlooked something that they point out.

Sounds like the new iMac design will basically look like a 'standard' external monitor.
On that topic: Any new rumors on Apple's re-entry into the external display market (consumer versions of the Pro-display)?

Cellular connectivity in Macs never seemed to make a lot of sense to me. Surely this would only be useful to people who... don’t have phones? Who’s going to pay extra for a second SIM card for their Mac when they can just tether off their phone?

Face ID, on the other hand, is an absolute no brainier in Macs. I can only assume the delay is due to technical and/or cost issues.

After all, a user typically sits further away from a Mac screen than from a phone screen. So I guess the sensor from the iPhone can’t just be reused in Macs.

FaceID makes sense and I am sure it will be part of the APple Silicon iMac.

TouchID is not possible with the wireless keyboard.

Does Face ID make sense on a computer? There are times when I just sit in front of my computer, I don’t want it to unlock. TouchID seems to make more sense, although on the iMac, it’s probably hard to build TouchID on the magic keyboard.

I won't buy another iMac until it has FaceID. And, I'd like to see the detached keyboard include TouchID or a USB A port and solid, fully integrated support for Yubikey and similar hardware keys. Stop f**k around. The tech exists; USE IT.

Dont use that feature on my phone. Altho a pin for login would be something that I would love for Apple to intro.

I myself don’t find a need for cellular on Macs, though I feel like I hear tech / apple fans/users asking for this a lot. I wonder if part of it is related to licensing and increased costs. I think I read at one point the license for the modem or something was directly preportional to the price of the device that its being included on? Makes me think that maybe once Apple is designing and using its own modem chips that they’ll start including them in Silicon based Macs.

Good thought on the distance requirement for Face ID. I do feel like they improved it for the iPad Pro when it launched a year after the iPhone X (multiple orientation and slightly farther throw). But with a Mac it could be significantly farther I guess.

I imagine it might be similar to how Macs are now, or even an iPad for example. When I sit at my iMac or iPad (on a keyboard), neither unlock until I take action — hitting something on the keyboard wakes my iMac and unlocks it when my watch is on, or hitting a key or tapping the screen of my iPad will wake and unlock it.

It does make sense. Windows has had facial login for a few years. It very convenient not having to type your password, especially if your computer sits idle often and locks. BUT, on some laptops I've owned, the facial recognition happens SO FAST, it's annoying. It's annoying because I want to log in as a different user and I have to cover the camera during startup so that I can choose a different user!
