Iso 7736

If this mini iPad is ISO 7736 compliant (double DIN 180 x 100 mm panel or 7.086" x 3.93") it will put many car radio manufacturers out of business.

The US standard for a Double DIN sized radio is a 4" x 7" so lets hope for something really close to that.

It would fit perfectly in your car. Someone would make a snap on adapter gizmo and we'd be able to take it with us in the car, remove it when we got to our destination.

Can't wait!!

It would put a lot of car radio thieves out of business, too...

Until you forget it, or leave it to cook in the hot sun...then you're all out of business.....

I actually love the 8" form factor, I think it is perfect for consumption and most people who use the iPad actually don't use it for more than that.

However I just don't see how this is viable as it will either completely cannibalise the iPod Touch market if it is priced low enough - yes the touch is an entry-level device, but it is so because it is cheap, being a games machine it is massively popular with kids and why would they want a small iPod when they could get a bigger and more usable iPad for the same price - or it will be too expensive to actively compete with Google and Amazon, in which case all it does is impact sales of the iPad3.

Apple don't sell at anything close to a loss (see the price refurb iPad 1s still sell for), and to create a product that would compete on price with the aforementioned 7 inchers, they'd have to release a poor and outdated product, something they just don't do.

I see a lot more merit in something like a 5" iPod Touch replacement, where people who are locked into the Apple eco-system can get a portable tablet-lite experience far cheaper.

I've wanted a 7" iPad ever since the original came out. I'm not the only one. And no, price has nothing to do with it. It's because I prefer the smaller form factor. The only reason that the 7" tablet market hasn't got very big yet is that all those tablets have been crap. With the Nexus 7, that changes.

Not only is it the first non-Apple tablet to actually look decent, but now Google has also finally got Android good enough to actually give iOS a serious run for it's money. Just drop your prejudice for a second and give Jelly Bean a try. It's just as snappy as iOS 5 - a first for Android. And the Android market isn't full of just crap anymore. I've always laughed at Android but after checking out a Galaxy Nexus with Jelly Bean, suddenly the iOS experience on my iPhone 4S is actually starting to feel a bit cramped and boring.

I've been a hardcore Apple fanboy since my LC 475, almost never touched an Android device. Now I'm definitely getting a Nexus 7 and considering the next Nexus phone or even the Galaxy Nexus over the next iPhone. I think this is the real danger for Apple here - the Nexus 7 being an entry point into the Android ecosystem; an OS which is just now becoming a real, viable alternative to iOS.

It's bound to happen at least to some extent. Look at the rave reviews the Nexus 7 is getting and the buzz it's creating. So Apple has to react now in order to maintain iOS' strong position for the future. They have to offer an alternative to the Nexus 7. I'm sure they've had a 7-8" iPad pretty much planned out and ready to build for a long time, but held back on it because it simply wasn't necessary to make it a reality yet, and to make sure sales for the fullsize iPad were maximized. Now the time has come.

So it'd be far from illogical if these rumors were actually true. Personally I'm guessing a 7,XX" iPad Mini announced before the end of the year, at $299 cheapest version (no, Apple doesn't need to compete with the Nexus 7's pricepoint). But - even though it's the iPad I've always wanted, I'm honestly not so sure I'll feel the need to get one...

Well said. I just received a 7 inch SGT2 7.0 and so far i'm liking the form factor very much. I'm diggin' those Live wallpapers and widgets even though they are pretty much just the cool factor. I do miss ios smoothness and how fast it is even on old handsets, but I think Jelly Bean is one step closer (from what i've seen) to an overall smooth experience.

I got nexus 7 envy of course, but it doesn't have a rear camera so my tablet wins there, but the nexus wins pretty much everywhere else.

It's coming folks.

If you don't want it, don't buy it.

There will be millions though, like myself, that do want this size and form factor.

I hope it's true this is true, I like the Kindle size but still prefer a Ipad so this will be perfect for me.

I love my iPad 3 but I think I will be getting the Nexus 7 instead of the iPad mini. A Tegra 3 CPU and a 12 core GPU for $199 is just too insanely good to pass up.

You'll be sooooorrryyyyy.:(...That will be $199 that you could have put towards an awesome iPad Mini that will blow the Nexus 7 awaaaayyyy.....

What a waste of engineering if it is released, no one will buy it, I have an I phone an iPad and an iMac wtf does anyone want with that... Seriously, we buy apple because it's cool and innovative, that's just filler.

But it is not going to be popular unless it has GPS standard. That is the compelling point of the Nexus 7 for me. Built in GPS without having to get cellular makes it very usable as a car mountable device. Apple has been very consistent in offering GPS only as a part of the celluar chipset. I don't see them changing that. I just might get the Nexus 7 now and see how I like it and if Apple brings out a mini in the Fall I can compare and decide if I want it but they are going to be late to the party this time if they wait till Fall

+1
Sorry Apple but GPS standard is compelling in a mobile device.
no more game playing by forcing upselling to cellular phone data devices just to get GPS

i always get amazed by how many apple fans don't get what apple stands for.

Steve Jobs said NO to the 7" tablet so that alone is the end of the discussion.

Apple does not " stand " for anything other than making money. They are a business, not a social movement.

Steve Jobs is dead. Apple does not care what Steve " would have wanted " they care about making money. The small tablet market is HOT with lots of money to be made.

The small tablet market is exploding.

Lots of people will buy it. Apple cares more about their money than others opinions.

as much as i am embedded into the Apple iOS Eco-System, i am really tempted to buy this Nexus 7 tablet. i do a lot of mountain biking and ride bike trails and then the river trail down to center city Philadelphia. i usually make a pit stop at Starbucks or Reading Terminal Market. the iPad is too big to fit into my Camelbak hydropak (not too long, but too wide to fit into the accessory pocket). the Nexus 7 would be a perfect fit. an iPad Mini could be a perfect fit but we're in July and there are no concrete prospects of an "iPad Mini" except for news report and supplier rumots. the summer is halfway through and it would be great to have a tablet with me when i ride into the city.

i am skeptical about owning anything Android though since 2 of my friends have been royally screwed by the hardware manufacturers of their Android phones. their phones are 1 1/2 yrs and 2 yrs old, and HTC told them they have no plans of allowing them to upgrade to ICS. the one good thing about the Nexus 7 is that it's Google's branding and while designed and manufactured by ASUS, i would hope it would continue to receive first priority for OS upgrades. decisions decisions...

i guess i'll just wait it out and see. i'm never one to buy a product when it first comes out anyways. maybe a few months into the Nexus 7 release there will be some more concrete details about the iPad Mini

Consumers care more about their money than others' opinions too. I just don't get the "there's money to be made" argument. Consumers given a choice between a $199 device and an Apple tablet (which could not possibly be priced at anything close to that) will likely go with the $199 device. Amazon and Google/Asus will sell a decent amount and then what? It's not like they're going to have record quarters. They probably won't make more than 10% on the device. You have to sell a hell of a lot of $200 devices to make it worth your while. Certainly a lot more than Amazon has been selling.

that statement is exactly what i think will destroy Apple if they don't change their attitude. we can't deny how successful Apple is at developing products that people want to buy...that's a fact. i love their stuff: my iPhone 4S is fabulous compared to the Blackberry i had, my iPad 2 is still wonderful despite there being a newer model. i enjoy their iOS devices so much when my Acer laptop dies i will most likely buy a Macbook Pro 13".

however i am starting to see a shift in the way Apple is balancing what they are offering in their products and what people are asking for. maybe it's due to the unrealistic expectations of rumor sites and forums, who knows. for the longest of times, it seemed that Apple's products were ahead of people's expectations. for the last 2 years though, people's expectations are significantly ahead of what Apple is offering at every product release. that is not necessarily Apple's fault...it's our fault as consumers. but with that said, we are the ones purchasing their products so ultimately we have more power over Apple than their own board of directors. from a financial standpoint, Apple works for its customers, they work for us. if Apple's customers are dreaming bigger than Apple Inc, that spells disaster. i don't work at Apple so i don't know what's actually in their pipeline for the next 2 years, but i think the discrepancy between customer expectations and actual product offerings might begin to pose a problem (despite record sales currently)

that's just my opinion from the product development experience i have. customer expectations can sink a product development company just as much as shareholder expectations can sink a stock

You are taking this way too seriously. The lack of a 7" device will sink Apple because they somehow owe it to consumers to release a low-cost small tablet? Then vote with your wallet. Apple survives in a world with lots of huge competitors. The tablet market is expanding, just like the smartphone market was expanding when Apple entered it. They don't need to dominate every market in order to be successful as a company, they just need to do things well. So what if Apple loses market share in a growing market? It's not like they're selling fewer devices year-over-year.

Just wanted to add...

You can also count me as someone who has waited for one. This would upsell me rather than cannibalize as I'm more likely to get the next ipod touch or now the nexus 7(*). It's a size and money thing for me. Currently using my 1.25 Ghz PPC G4 mac mini, ipod shuffle, an old beat to hell 8Gb ipod touch, and an Apple tv.
*edit- if there is no ipad mini / ipod XL

I have a real interest in the 7 inch category for tablets. I've had the original iPad, the iPad2 (now my wife's) and the new iPad. I think they're great devices, but they are not portable enough for all my use cases. I have been through almost every Android OEM manufacturer for this class of device, and currently own a HTC Flyer -- but most, including the Flyer, are wanting in at least one respect (screen quality, performance, irritating skin on Android, battery life, etc.). I have a Nexus 7 16 GB on pre-order.

Having been through all these devices, I can safely say that Apple could make a real impact in the category, but they might be a little late, if the Nexus 7 fulfills its potential, as reviews seem to indicate it does. Sure, it will be Apple, and even with the Nexus 7 in hand, I would take a long look at a 7 inch iPad, but they might be too late to market. Apple usually makes its biggest impact by opening a market, not stepping into a well established one with a strong, established competitor (which I believe the Kindle, Nook and Nexus 7 will represent in this class).

I also wonder how much credence to put into these rumors. If it's coming as soon as hinted, wouldn't we see evidence of these devices in the iOS6 betas? There's usually an excess of devices alluded to within the beta code to hint at upcoming arrivals, and I haven't seen anything posted from that source to indicate an impending release in this class.

iPod Touch Replacement?

Does anyone else think that these will replace the current 3.5" iPod Touch? iPhones have been cannibalizing the iPods for several years now. It makes sense to enter the 7" market and phasing out the current 3.5" form factor. There is obviously a HUGE potential for an iPod with a bigger screen and it could effectively kill the handheld game system market to boot.

It's about time Apple wised up and plugged the hole in their lineup.

The 7" size is a very popular size ergonomically. It will be even more popular once Apple joins the party.

It's very amusing that people here cannot have a discussion about this potential model, without comparing it to something. Android, Amazon, or Apple products. Why compare?

It's a completely different size than the existing iPad, 7" is much bigger than the Touch, why so many get all worked up seems so hilarious.

If we are honest about it, the fact is we all know it will sell like crazy no matter where it's priced, or what feature set is included.

That's what Apple is all about... they can sell anything. Especially since they have such incredible momentum at the moment.

The sooner they release these, the faster the bottom line will continue to grow. It's as simple as that :)
