add up the possibilities of it happening, and add in the ever increasing numbers of people with NAND storage devices in their pockets and it would start happening a lot more then i guess :(

get out your little paranoid microwave statistical machine if you really need to :p ;)

No need to get scared, the Microwave levels are safe for human use, it can be damaging to delicate components though or cause issues.

How about I take that NAND flash and stick in the same pocket as my cellphone or brush it against a nice magnet.

Every medium has its flaws.

Film based drives grow fungi, Optical get scratched, magnetic platter get scratched or wiped and NAND gets wiped.

Although every medium has its flaws, that doesn't mean every medium has the SAME flaws. Optical is particularly sensitive to scratches, degradation, etc. Magnetic degrades over time (scratches are rare nowadays). NAND is sensitive to extreme electromagnetic fields, has limited number of write cycles, etc.

Given that, my advice still holds. Don't use optical for primary storage. Use RAID'ed magnetic or flash for primary storage, and always backup. And optical is a fine choice for backups in certain situations.

I fear not. Apple will have to put in a whole bunch of DRM in for Blu-Ray movie playback. That is why Steve called Blu-Ray "a bag of hurt".

I still think we'll hear Apple announce BD-RE drive support on the iMac and Mac Pro within the next few months. We forget the hardware on the current iMac and Mac Pro are fully ready for Blu-ray support and adding extensions to MacOS X 10.6 and maybe updating Quicktime/iTunes are the only additions needed to go full BD-RE support.

Or just get Make MKV and VLC and you can play your Blu-ray discs today!

seems the easiest option :D

Yellow Dog Linux.

great thanks! found this PDF for on the yellow dog website, runs you through the installation process.

a 3.7GB download, is that for real!? mygod! us aussies here cry when downloading that much! is there a smaller download somewhere lol?

Nope, all the PS3 supporting Distros are in DVD format only. You can get Ubuntu etc but its easily broken on the PS3.

i want to rip the BD movies so i can then convert them to a digital format suitable for streaming across my network ;)
Ah. OK, I'm understanding you now. ;)

I'd think to get a ripped copy to play off of a PS, you'd need an application (viewer, such as VLC or similar), which means the PS3 would need an accessible OS, such as Yellow Dog version of Linux.
