Fostering kindness and preventing harm is a higher good than freedom of speech

Absolutely not, this is exactly what creates echo chambers.

Reading some of the posts on Bluesky shows anything but kindness and preventing harm. It is merely a platform that moderates certain points of view and not others.

Yep, "freedom of speech as long as it's something I agree with".

People fail to realize both BSKY and X are 💩. Twitter had never been appealing, this useless format of simple text messages had not fostered anything but s**tposting and propaganda, and it still serves this purpose but for different purpose, it is a Matrix: you redpill or bluepill.

Fun fact is, you will get a much more interesting discussion here on MR than on any of the existing social networks, because… forum is forum, and it was like that ever since Ancient Rome!

I had done an experiment and signed up on X maybe two month ago. And you know what? They have banned me yesterday! My first ever permaban on social media, they even said I cannot sign up anymore. I can’t even delete this account lol, “action not allowed”. And the reason? I made a comment. And no, not something about Musk, Trump, I commented on a post about US-Russia relations and said that russians are the ones to blame for failing negotiations. Instantly my comment got removed, and I tried to appeal decision and they have completely banned my account thereafter🤣 So fyi: it was an auto ban that was later completed by real human mod, it was not a type of ban like if someone reports comment, because comment was deleted in less than 5 seconds.

And Elon even brags that he is pro free speech. Yeah, seen that somewhere already.

Some practical takeouts from my experiment on X:

- platform’s newsfeed algorithm is broken, you get old news and duplicates of same news but from other accounts;
- it is filled with bots and farming accounts;
- scam-crypto accounts on every corner;
- echo chamber at it’s best: people believe whatever they see;
- automated bots, parody accounts, what is that??? Why would I need a summary of what I just read by some useless “automated account” in comments? And these comments are always upvoted or pinned in comments;
- ugly UI design, bad text legibility, boring. I thought Apple was bad at minimalism until I saw what Elon made out of Twitter🤦‍♂️ Or well, what Twitter had done to itself over all these years, so I guess Bluesky doesn’t differ significantly.

Won’t sign up on Bluesky for the same reason: I want less politics in my life, not more. Twitter was already politicized and after Elon’s purchase it just changed the spectrum

Bluesky is rolling out a new update introducing features that might ease the transition for social media users coming over from X (Twitter).

First up, version 1.100 adds emoji reactions to Bluesky's direct messaging system. Users can now respond to messages with quick emoji reactions by holding down on a message and selecting from common options like hearts, thumbs up, and laughing faces. For those wanting more expression, the three-dot menu provides access to a full emoji keyboard.

The app's search page has also been completely revamped and renamed "Explore." This new discovery hub prominently displays trending topics labeled with tags like "Hot" or "New," along with timestamps showing when topics started gaining traction.

Beyond trends, the Explore page now recommends accounts to follow across various interest categories such as Art, Sports, Music, and Politics. Users can also personalize their experience by selecting specific interests that inform what appears on their Explore page.

Meanwhile, for newcomers, Bluesky has added curated "Starter Packs," or pre-made lists of accounts focused on specific topics that users can follow with a single tap.

The features are designed to make the transition easier for users migrating from other platforms while improving content discovery within Bluesky.

Bluesky has over 34 million active users, according to the company. That's still a lot less than Meta's Threads in total users, but the platform continues to gain popularity as an alternative to X. The update is available now on the App Store [Direct Link] for iPhone users running iOS 15.1 or later.

Whats bluesky anyway? “For newcomers” writer should first explain what Bluesky is

it's okay to admit you don't get it.

Just because they look similar and offer similar functionality, does not mean they are, in fact, the same.

Unlike Twitter, Bluesky puts the user in the center. It doesn't de-boost links, it provides great moderation tools, and you get a chronological timeline instead of being forced into algorithmic engagement-bait.

Importantly, it's designed from the group up to not be controlled or censored by billionaires because it's created on an open protocol which means you can take your users with you if someone with nefarious intentions.

Put it all together and Bluesky is well on its way to fulfilling the promise of what Twitter could and should have been, and I'm personally grateful that it exists and hopeful for the future.
This is the right answer

I think how bad they are is also reflected in what you want to get out of them. For marketing purposes and to get in touch with certain higher ups these platforms can actually be great. Twitter unfortunately always had the issue that it pushed tourmoil on you. I tried to bypass that by turning my account Japanese so I just could not read whatever ******** the social media hate mop was fighting about "trending" today.
On BlueSky you have user curated block lists that you can subscribe to (i.e. to not see crypto scammers or AI Art accounts), you can also curate your own list of blocked words wich I used to block out many political buzzwords and names because I also am not interested in the online flame mop fighting over them. So its actually quiet customizable to cater to a decent amount of the needs you voiced. (but I also found it funny that you got banned of x for posting something political while claiming thats not what you want. :p)
The disadvantage of BlueSky is that the user base is relatively limited still, it's not nearly as vast as twitter was when seeking the opertunety to network.

I'd rather not see literal nazi propaganda or cryptocurrency pump-and-dumps. Not to mention seeing paid replies at the top and countless ads and bots.
I'll agree with all of that and the continual porn bots/OF girls on X gets old fast

The CEO of Bluesky is worth about $5m. She and the rest of the staff are a bunch of ex-Twitter software engineers who span off at the behest of ex-CEO Jack Dorsey to look at creating a federated platform. The company is ran as a public benefit and not purely for shareholder gain.

Its also a nice breezy social networking platform :)
The same Jack Dorsey who bailed not long into its launch, after realizing BS had become a bigger pile of dog splat than Twitter ever managed even in it's darkest times?

Also, LOL @ "breezy." I thought we finally left that trash buzzword in 2024. Don't tell me it's making a comeback.

Can we get ability to edit a post and also 1000 characters per post instead of just 300? Thanks

He likely bailed because they haven’t found a way to monetise it yet, if ever.

We can’t really ditch breezy because some days it’s how we describe the weather 🌬️🌬️😄
