it is a valid question because it really does look absolutely ridiculous and I hate bluetooth headsets with a passion

No, it's not valid, because he suggests using the earbuds instead. Talking into your earbuds looks just as dumb as using the bluetooth earpiece.

So the thread is kind of pointless since the suggested fix is just as dumb as the thing he's complaining about.

Whenever I see someone with that big bluetooth thing on their ear I just laugh. Why not just wear the earbuds, since it had a mic on it?

Yeah, why not look like some punk teenagers, who feel the need to use their iPods everywhere they go, looking like "yeah look at me, i'm cool, my mom bought me an ipod!"

You all know who im talking about. Walking around the mall, grocery stores, theme parks, etc, with the iconic white earphones on.

I think they are tacky but I have to use one while driving it's illegal to be on the phone without having a hands-free but outside the car it's hands on I love showing off my iPhone :p

I believe the correct term for these people are "Bluetools"

I'm pretty sure I see a lot of the "ghetto fab" crowd using them to pretend they have money as well.

I completely agree despite their rational functionality, they are beyond disgusting when actually seen on a person ... I'm waiting for the invisible implants that can read my thoughts so I don't walk around and look like I'm talking to anything.

i dont care if people use it in a car, thats different
but when they walk around with it in their ear its a different story and totally ridiculous, and most likely are mentally handicapped, because they fail to understand that it doesn't make you awesome.

Yeh, BT headsets are stupid. People look stupid wearing them. The other day I was in line at Dunkin Donuts and the jerk in front of me was talking away at full volume waving his hands around as if he was talking to someone right there. Yeh, he looked pretty stupid "talking to himself".

I agree, people look like douches when wearing bluetooth headsets. I own one, but have never used it with my phone, I use it exclusively for voice chat when playing PS3 online.

I think you are guys are reading WAY too far into this.

When the first iPhones came out, people felt that having an iPhone made you douchy and that it was used as a status symbol. Even today most people consider owning a mac as a "status symbol."

You guys make it so that advances in technology have to be about status instead of what the intended use is.

It is a headset. It goes on your head so that you can keep your hands free and have a conversation at the same time.

Why does everything have to be about looks cool/douchy, is useful/douchy. Why can't you guys just get over it and realize that bluetooth headsets provide functionality that people want. I don't wear one to show my "status."

You don't need "status" to own a $25 dollar piece of technology. All you need is $25 dollars and a need for a headset.

Get over yourselves. Making threads about how terrible bluetooth headsets look is arguably ten times more stupid than wearing one.

If more people wore headsets instead of tying up a hand, then it would allow them to have better range of free movement while they are walking in the mall through a crowded pack of people. It would help people pay attention better while driving.

Get over yourselves and if you don't like them, then don't wear them.

My headset provides the functionality I need so that I can concentrate on stuffing my shopping cart with food for the rest of the month and still make it home on time before my wife bites my head off. It lets me have a conversation with my coworkers while I am under a desk setting up a network like or connecting/disconnecting cables. It lets me put gas and do my banking on my phone and hold a conversation so that I can make it to do other things I need to do. Having another free hand, or being able to look at my phone while I talk is incredibly useful to me.

Honestly, with so many problems in the world nowadays, and with all of us slaves to the work day, why is it that we worry about so petty things like how a headset looks. I put it on my ear because it makes my life just a tiny bit easier, not so that I can please people or hope I look cool.

The real question is why in the world people wear the damn thing at night, at dinner, at a nice restaurant, with a spouse or SO. What went wrong in their life that they think that is acceptable or courteous. If I was sitting across the table from a SO and they had that in their ear, I know where I would shove it. Talk about making someone feel like a phone call from anyone is more important than spending time with an actual person.

Whenever I see someone with that big bluetooth thing on their ear I just laugh. Why not just wear the earbuds, since it had a mic on it?
Well... apart from the nuisance of the cable, there's also the fact that the included 'headset' sucks. The new, smaller earbuds fall out of your ears unless you're a toddler, and the mic has a propensity for twisting itself 180 degrees away from your mouth. I tried using it for the first couple of days, but people were constantly complaining that they couldn't hear me. I ended up having to hold that miniscule mic to keep it from twisting away, and if I have to hold it it's not much of a "handsfree" is it?

So, I use my Jabra BT800 headset which has a display that shows the caller's phone number. This means I don't have to take the phone out when someone calls, the phone is more of a 'base station'.

talking to your ear buds looks odd too, at least when people see your bluetooth they know your talking on the phone

mine is kept in my pocket at all times except when I am on a call. I do agree that the people who walk around with their headsets on all time makes me laugh. Like they are getting so many calls that they need to have the thing sitting on their ear all day long.
I absolutely agree with docal. Take it out of your ear and put it back there when you get a call!

I think they are essential for driving though. I would never hold a phone to my ear while driving, and I hope that anyone that does do that drives themselves over a cliff for endangering other people!

But bluetooth scream all kinds of hotness

*swoon*

(Captain Jack Harkness from Torchwood)
LOL @ MadGoat. I'm with you, although I think Ianto looks hotter in his bluetooth headset. *double swoon* :D

(Can't find a picture of him with a Bluetooth headset on though!)

Why would they need to feel that a headset makes them look "awesome"? They do it because it's practical. Are you really so shallow and insecure that you need something as trivial as a headset or pair of headphones to look "awesome"? Ooooh, look at the guy with those stylish white earbuds, I'm exploding with awe and respect...

I agree practicality has alot to do with the 35-40 crowd wearing them. WHY? Because they have jobs! and are busy making money! Headsets offer them freedom to do other things like watch where theyre walking and looking up files or documents, if this poster had a job like that he'd understand.

I am 20 and have a good job like that and the Jawbone 2 is the sexiest headset out there and doesn't look dumb, that's why I have one paired to my iPhone.

It may look retarded but it's the law to wear some form of handsfree device in CA while driving. This is the only time I wear my mine.

Of course, the included white headphones do make you look awesome. They do. They say "Hey look! I bought a phone that's also an iPod! And guess what? I'm listening to it with these awesome headphones that have just amazing fidelity! I am so cool rain turns to snow before it hits me - and that's also white, because white is awesome."

As others have pointed out, some people actually use the phone as a phone, and they don't always want wires dangling between their ear and said phone.

Me, though? I've found BT to be a pain and a source of loss of sound quality, so I use my BT headset infrequently and prefer the wired solution.

Presumably, you look non-douchelike when doing that, unlike someone using a phone.
WTF??? How else do you listen music?
Nice post.
As mentioned, people sometimes use phones as, oh, phones.

Seriously, dude, you need to take a step back and just soak in the awesomeness of a $30 headset that includes a mic. It's just... mind bogglingly awesome.

Well said.

A bluetooth might look stupid some of the time, but it serves a great purpose...like for driving. I used to use a headset with my Razr, but that was because I could listen to music through it. Luckily, women usually have enough hair to hide the headset anyway :p I really didnt feel anymore stupid wearing the BT than I do with white wires hanging out of my ears! At least with the BT, it was not as noticeable.

How has this thread not been moved? This has nothing to do with the iPhone and was started so that someone could post an unrelated personal opinion about how Bluetooth headsets look.

This forum needs better moderation. It's junk threads like this that make forum-browsing a chore when people are looking for USEFUL information. That, and the dozen or so nearly-identical threads that always seem to exist here (i.e. how do I turn off repeat SMS notifications in 2.1?)

Sorry for venting, but some people actually come here looking for relevant info about the iPhone. It *is* the iPhone subforum after all.

When the first iPhones came out, people felt that having an iPhone made you douchy and that it was used as a status symbol.

News flash: People with iPhones still look douchey.

Even today most people consider owning a mac as a "status symbol."

As well they should!

And so does bluetooth.

But, see here's the rub: those "douchey" people actually don't care what you think.

I wear a bluetooth headset, and I'm not a douchey business guy in my 40s. I don't even wear suits. I just need a headset and I use it regularly, because I don't like having to press my douchey iPhone against my douchey face when I'm involved in a douchey phone call, minding my own douchey business. I don't care what it looks like or what it makes me look like to people who pay too much attention to those things.

My iPhone? Same thing. I use it because it works. If people think I'm a douche for it, big deal. At least I'm not flashing it around when I'm making phone calls (I have my douchey headset, remember?)

And my Mac? I like it. And thanks to those douchey phone calls I make (on said douchey iPhone with douchey headset), I get paid enough to afford one. If that makes me a douche, well, I'm a happy douche, who really doesn't give a rat's --- if some basement dwellers posting on forums all day feel that people like me look douchey. :)
