I mostly see people with BT-headsets walking around _not_ talking. I tend to wonder if they're actually just wearing a dummy – or vice versa.

All those people in this thread saying they need it for work seems like an entirely different breed than the people I mostly see wearing: People in company with others, people in a taxi (being passengers), people in a bus, and (of course) people not talking at all, but merely walking around with it.

Anyway, I can certainly see the use for BT headsets, as well as wired and going "bare", but certainly, it must depend on circumstances, needs, and how much fidelity one wants and/or needs.

I only use my bluetooth headset for driving, because in NY you cant be on your phone while driving, plus its unsafe..... and i would look like a complete idiot driving around with ipod headphones on. People would think my car radio is broken and i'm listening to music on my iphone/ipod lol.

Heres a better idea, just don't talk and drive at all. Turn the phone off until you get where you are going. How is holding a phone vs having a headset any safer. Is the conversation any different either way.

The conversation is no different, but it does seem to help with being more alert in the car, and it gives you a better range of movement. Plus I drive stick, so that makes it that much more important. I know that the truly safe thing is to not use the phone at all, but you can say the same thing about other distractions, such as talking to a passenger, etc...

My job needs to be able to reach me at all times, and living in Socal, the hour I could easily spend in my car is an unacceptable amount of time to be offline. I feel safe enough driving with a headset that I don't feel the need to look down, see that it's work calling, then pull across the entire freeway to stop and have the conversation.

I like them. When I'm out climbing I just pop a BT headset in and I can answer any important calls.

I think you are guys are reading WAY too far into this.

When the first iPhones came out, people felt that having an iPhone made you douchy and that it was used as a status symbol. Even today most people consider owning a mac as a "status symbol."

You guys make it so that advances in technology have to be about status instead of what the intended use is.

It is a headset. It goes on your head so that you can keep your hands free and have a conversation at the same time.

Why does everything have to be about looks cool/douchy, is useful/douchy. Why can't you guys just get over it and realize that bluetooth headsets provide functionality that people want. I don't wear one to show my "status."

You don't need "status" to own a $25 dollar piece of technology. All you need is $25 dollars and a need for a headset.

Get over yourselves. Making threads about how terrible bluetooth headsets look is arguably ten times more stupid than wearing one.

If more people wore headsets instead of tying up a hand, then it would allow them to have better range of free movement while they are walking in the mall through a crowded pack of people. It would help people pay attention better while driving.

Get over yourselves and if you don't like them, then don't wear them.

My headset provides the functionality I need so that I can concentrate on stuffing my shopping cart with food for the rest of the month and still make it home on time before my wife bites my head off. It lets me have a conversation with my coworkers while I am under a desk setting up a network like or connecting/disconnecting cables. It lets me put gas and do my banking on my phone and hold a conversation so that I can make it to do other things I need to do. Having another free hand, or being able to look at my phone while I talk is incredibly useful to me.

Honestly, with so many problems in the world nowadays, and with all of us slaves to the work day, why is it that we worry about so petty things like how a headset looks. I put it on my ear because it makes my life just a tiny bit easier, not so that I can please people or hope I look cool.

amen brother

...and we are going too far. if it needs more than one sentence to justify its probably naff.

I have every sympathy with people who need to show that they are so invaluable in their humdrum employment they need to available for consultation at anytime or place. I was quietly contemplated my naval in trap the other day and some prannock enters the trap next door. Next minute the Nokia theme tune and a meeting is being held while he strains and grunts over the evacuation of his cornflakes...whilst washing may hands he comes out fiddling with his bluetooth earpiece and spends 3 minutes adjusting his hair around his earpiece without washing his hands....lovely:rolleyes:

I totally agree with several of you. In this day and age, where everything is integrated into one device (like the iphone), everyone's minimizing the things they want to carry on them (them includes ear, holster, wallet, purse, feet, etc.). I don't really understand why folks want to add to this, and carry around a bluetooth headset, when they can easily get along without one.

Don't get me wrong. I understand how useful bluetooth technology is. All my 3 vehicles have integrated bluetooth. I got so used to them, that I won't buy a car without integrated bluetooth. And so I understand when you want to use a bluetooth headset in the car, while driving. But, in the mall? in the bank? in the grocery store? C'mon.. give me a break!!

Last year, in certain developing countries, you'd find bluetooth headsets on every Tom, Dick and Harry. That was the year when bluetooth headset came out there, and everyone wanted to show them off to everyone else. I understand if you want to show off a new gadget to others, but for those of us that've seen and had bluetooth for years now, we're beyond that phase. ....Been-there, done-that, now move-on..
