Controlling the volume is dependent on whether the music device has the AVRCP profile. iOS had this capability since 3.0. What was not available was track skip, but that is working as of 4.1.

If I remember correctly, those SonyEricsson headphones don't have any controls on them at all which is why I ruled them out though I really like how small they are. Before the 4.1 update you had no way to control the volume or anything with those headphones. I'm not sure if you can do it now from your iPhone.
Still a deal-breaker for me.
I bought one of these a few weeks ago for use at work and i am very impressed by it. Very good sound quality, great range (i leave my phone with my toolbox and can get a good distance around the workshop before it cuts out), handy you can use any phones with them (though the ones they come with are pretty good), battery is good, can get about 8 hours on a single charge, maybe a bit longer. The only niggles iare the touch-sensitive volume slider can be a bit hit and miss, and can take about 3 hours to fully charge. Other than that, it's great!
Can't wait for 4.1 to come out next week, it's getting a pain having to get the phone out to skip tracks, lol.
