I wonder how big and how long a battery would last.
I see that being a major factor for Apple implementing wireless alternatives.

Quite true. Any Bluetooth device should have an in-device battery charger and easy charge hookup for when it is not in use. You'll see this on the high-end (non-BlueTooth) Logitech wireless mice. I would expect nothing less from Apple.

The new Logitech mouse has a design I always thought - and in fact described to a friend - as the best set up - that is, when you are done using the mouse, you set it in a cradle that charges the batteries. No wires, but never have to replace the batteries. If only I had patented that notion!

6 or 7 years ago, a friend of mine had some no-name mouse that acted the same way. It was an IR one, so line-of-sight to the transiver was nessesary but the cradle charger was pretty cool. The big problem with that one was that it was NiCad batteries and, in order to avoid battery "memory" you had to drain the thing completely before putting it in it's cradle. He bought two and use each until it started to sputter and then swapped. I'd guess that today's would use LIon or some other non-memory batteries.

Yeah, I should hope so!

Honestly, I can't remember the last battery I saw with memory issues. Even modern NiCd's have overcome that issue as far as I can tell. But, yes, using batteries is a pain when you have to "completely drain" the battery before popping it in the charger! Best UI for a battery-powered device is that it goes in some kind of cradle when not in use without question or hesitation, and is hence fully charged when needed.
