Why would a bluetooth device need to request the iPhone to disable noise cancellation - shouldn't this be the default setting for bluetooth devices?

That was my feedback to the engineer. He seemed convinced it should be optional and showed me Plantronics response confirming that their newer headsets send such a request.

Apple engineering has indicated that the garbled audio is due to some BT headsets that have echo cancellation ate not correctly telling the iPhone to disable it's echo cancellation. Plantronics 925 is an example. Plantronics at least has acknowledged the issue but the fix is going to be 'buy a new headset' as far as they're concerned.

Apple maybe able to offer some relief in software but they seem to be washing their hands of the problem.

You sound as though you've seen official word from Plantronics on this. Please point the rest of us to a link; I for one haven't seen even an acknowledgment of the problem being on their end, let alone that they have no intention on fixing it. As my headset is still under warranty, having that in print from an official source may be useful. I'll be damned if I'm buying another unit--or another Motorola for that matter, since that has the same problem and is also quite new.

Frankly, since it happens with multiple brands of devices--all of which work fine with other phones, even other iPhones--I expect the solution to come from the handset manufacturer, not the BT headset side. I'll be very disappointed in Apple if they don't provide some relief of this issue, and soon.

I can't point you at a link. What I can do is reprint a portion of the email/bug reporter exchange I've had with Apple:

Engineering has provided the following feedback regarding this issue:

Some Plantronics headset model don't send command to disable echo cancelation on noise reduction on phone and perform dsp processing on there side as well. This results to dual echo cancelation which will cause bad audio. Like some old versions of Plantronics discovery 925. Plantronics is aware of this issue and newer version of headsets behave properly.

If you find bad audio issue with any other headset please attach air traces to the bug report.

BTW - many others are finding that background noise on the caller's end is the trigger. Next time the person you are talking to complains you sound garbled, see if they are in a noisy environment.

I have a pair of wired headphones with a mic and get the same issue. When using them to make/receive calls I can hear everything around me through the headphones, it's eerie!

BT issue here with both mine and my wife's iPhone 4. Motorola H715, H720 and Jabra Stone BT headsets. No issues with the headsets prior to iPhone 4. Everyone says we sound muffled or like we're underwater. Very frustrating!!

I use a Blueant Q1 headset and whenever I use it for incoming/outgoing calls I'm always told that the person on the other end can hear themselves echoing all the time.

This never happened when I had my 3GS and used the Q1....

Do you guys think the iPhone is the problem?

Also another iProblem I'm having is it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting...very annoying!

Thanks for the info. This is particularly interesting:

I had back to back calls a few days ago with the 925. A 20 minute call with my mother in law was fine--slight echo on her end, nothing irritating enough to get off the phone for (but nothing like the clean quality I had with the same headset and the original iPhone either). Two minutes later, got the "badly garbled, gotta go" response from another caller who was driving on the freeway at the time.

Thinking about it, other instances have mostly been similar. Even in quiet times though, neither the 925 or the Motorola t505 speakerphone have done as well with the ip4 as they do with the original iPhone--the echo factor is nearly always present at some point in the conversation.

I am using a Kenwood DDX-512 Touch Screen DVD Stereo with a Kenwood Bluetooth module connected and have had my 3G and 3GS running on it with ZERO issue for 2 years and now that the 4 came out with iOS4 I have the same horrible "You sound underwater and all muffled" issue as well. Its about 80% of the time this happens and I have to switch my phone over to speaker to finish the call (I live in CA. and its now against the law to talk on the phone without a headset or in car bluetooth).

I am getting really sick of this piece of crap phone... among this issue I also have the HORRIBLE Proximity Sensor issue as well so even if I wanted to have the phone to my ear in the car cause of the bluetooth it would hang up, mute, or put them on hold anyway.

Something has to be done with this piece of junk soon!!!

same here. Also have poor quality when using my BMW's built in bluetooth.

the Beem is the only BT i can get my iphone to actually work WITH and get good quality... thats strange...

one out of ten times it does fail to auto pair though. but once it is, it works like a real cell phone and blue tooth should... (which for the iP4 is out of the ordinary)

I know this might seem like an odd question.

But of all you with BT problems, how many of you got the iPhone 4 as a replacement for an older iPhone? Using the iTunes backup from the older phone?

I was having some Bluetooth connection issues, every time I would get out of range of my headset I would have to go into settings to reconnect it once I got back in range

Where before with my 3GS it would reconnect automagicly when I got beck in range or all I would have to do is tap the button on my BT headset to get it to reconnect.

I fixed this issue on my iP4 with a clean restore (not from backup) :(

I did a clean restore on mine when I was working with an Apple phone tech, did a test call to AT&T while I was on my blackberry with the Apple guy, nothing on the phone, just how it comes from the factory. The AT&T guy couldn't hear a thing I was saying.

Interesting perspective, but my biz partner is new to the iPhone with his IP4 and has the same issue.

I set mine up as a new phone straight out of the box, not from a backup, hoping to avoid most issues. And as it stands, the only major issue I have is the Bluetooth headset problem. If I were a heavy phone user, it would be a deal breaker, but since I only use it for a few calls a week, it's not the end of the world.

Given that it's happening with so many different BT units, most of which reportedly are fine with the 3GS or earlier units, I have to think Apple's going to have to address this in 4.1. Could be wishful thinking, of course...

Well there goes that idea :)

How does apple miss the mark with Bluetooth soo badly? No file transfers, no AVRCP(yet), no iPad tether.

With as good as the iOS is getting, bluetooth is one of the last things to really hit out of the park.

And what happened to all those cool gadgets that were at the iPhone OS 3.0 event. The bloodsugar meter and all that crap.

I thought we would see more cool Bluetooth gadgets and such. :(

I just want to pipe in and say that I am also having issues. I have has issues with both my iPhone 4's and a Jawbone Prime headset. I was frustrated with it turning itself off in the middle of calls, so I purchased a Plantronics Pro headset, same Bluetooth issues.

I have noticed something, however. The problem occurs when you answer the phone from the iPhone and then switch over to the bluetooth. If I answer the call (or make a call) starting with the headset, there are no problems (from what I can tell).

Not in my case. I can answer a call directly on the headset and have the garbling. It's very very random. I've yet to find any kind of pattern; it can work fine for five calls and be a problem with the sixth. No idea.

I also have a Plantronics 975 & an Eclipse radio with Bluetooth. Same intermittent under water problems along with connecting and disconnecting between bluetooth and phone.

I exchanged phones and it might be a little better, but still not as good as blackberry.

Waste of time exchanging the iPhone. The ball is in Apple's court now..

I replaced my 3GS with a 4, using the same iTunes and machine to do the setup. However I setup the new 4 iPhone as a new phone (did not select the restore from backup radio button). I did not use the backup from the 3GS. I did however keep it as I might need it in the future.

I have a blueant z9i and a jawbone icon thinker. Both have this issue. On the jawbone I have removed the A2DP setup, and on the blueant, the noise cancelation is turned down or off (not sure if you can completely remove it)

If anyone needs me to do any testing on those 2 headsets, let me know.

This is also not the case with me. I can answer the phone with the BT headset (blueant z9i and jawbone icon thinker) and the other end cannot hear me, I can switch over mid call by turning BT on, they no longer can hear me until I switch back, and I can initiate a call with the BT headset on, and they think I pocket dialed them.

I have tried every combo I can think of and do with those 2 headsets. Nothing works.

Are any of you testing iOS 4.1 Beta 3? It seems to be working better on my test phones with respect to BT call quality and connection issues but since the audio problem was/is intermittent, it's hard for me to say for sure that something's changed.

all this and more

I have the same problem but one added problem. Seems like when I am in a wifi area that my ip4 connects automatically, my BT will connect and reconnect. I will just be walking around and hear it beeping in my ear as it disconnects and reconnects. may happen 5-6 times an hour or so. Tried two different models of BT, on motorolla the other a plantronics. Anyone having this problem?
