Tesla needs to implement CarKey ASAP.

I almost didn't buy a tesla because I swore I needed Carplay and Apple Carkey. I ended up getting a model Y performance and now I don't understand why anyone would need Apple Carkey. Your phone is already your key and you don't have to take it out of your pocket. What benefit would Carkey give you?

This even works when the phone is „officially“ dead for some time.
Also, when was the last time your phone ran out of battery?

GPS drains a lot of battery. So when you forget a cable to charge your phone, it is a big concern.

1 Security: UWB and NFC are much more secure than bluetooth
2 Works when the phone is out of battery
3 Seamless integration into Wallet no app required
4 Key can easily and natively be shared with others and be sent to them via iMessage

really hope Tesla will integrate this soon.

This. If I have to take my phone out of my pocket to open my door I won’t use it. My Dodge Journey even has keyless entry standard for crying out loud!

The point here with the addition of UWB is that the phone does not need to leave your pocket.

Really? Since when does’nt their Solution depend in the Internet? I remember a report where a couple was locked out because the car had no Connection. Also, 2019 lots of owners where locked out because the App was down.
It relies on Bluetooth, no internet needed... never did. Phone Key is just a convenience feature anyway for walk up/away unlock/lock. If you are a Tesla owner and don't carry around your physical key card for emergency reasons, well that's on you if you get locked out.

1) I'm all for more security and less energy use, hopefully Tesla can figure this out.
2) This is definitely a nice-to-have, but still prudent to always carry the physical key card for any type of emergency like if my phone is lost, broken, or stolen.
3) You need the app to monitor everything else going on with the car, so integrating into Wallet is not all that helpful.
4) I can allow anyone to use my car from anywhere in the world (without a key or being an authenticated user) with the Tesla app, so this already exists. Also, after they are done with that one drive, the car will not allow them to access afterwards (until I give them access again).

As with credit cards, and now car keys, the real thing is easier imho.

It's easier to reach in my pocket and grab a card for contactless payment (rather than faffing around with biometrics, double tapping a home button, and whatnot on my phone).

It's also easier to just have a standard car key with a button you press to unlock your car.
You sound like someone who has never even tried these easier methods. I pay for most things with my watch and it's seamless when it is available. Wherever I am faced with having to pull out my wallet and pull out my card and swipe an wait and possibly having to sign something or accept the charges and then wait for a printed receipt and deal with that...my point is once you try it, going back to the old number of card steps is too annoying and insecure. Same goes with car keys. I walk up to my car and it unlocks with a wireless FOB as I approach. I hate just having to carry the physical keys so this would be an improvement too.

Exactly (I love the Performance Y, but wish it was faster). I never wanted CarPlay in the first place though.

I used to only drive BMW’s but they are pretty a average these days. I remember when the driving experience was important to BMW (manual transmissions on the 3, etc). It wasn’t that long ago but times change.

Given the technology available at the time, Tesla has done an excellent job on the 3/Y with the phone being a car key. But yeah, would be awesome if they could implement UWB at one point going forward.

I think CarKey can be implemented via software update using the NFC in BPillar.

passive unlock works 95% of the time. other 5% of the time is frustrating

i explain more here.

I wouldn't mind this on my Tesla but so far the current key has never been an issue.

double tap Apple Watch, wave at the NFC, pay.
wave Apple watch at the door, unlock.

way better than what you’re suggesting

This is scary. seems like an easy thing to crack. All some car stealer needs to do is intercept the digital signal and steal the car.

No.
Requires the encrypted token and handshake.
Rotating keys.
Think about an authentication app that generates a unique key every time you try to login.

Nah Model 3 relies on bluetooth. Still doesn't work all the time as it should.

You don't need to take out car key on modern cars. The doors have a sensor that auto unlocks when your hand grips the door handle.
On newer BMWs you don't even have to touch the handle. Car unlocks as you approach it it automatically locks when you walk away.

"unlock and start their vehicle without needing to take their iPhone out of their pocket or bag"

My boss just bought a 5 series and he says you still need the fob to be with you to start the car. Which makes the whole thing pretty pointless. Especially with this price tag.
He doesn't need the fob. He needs to put his phone in the charging pad to be able to start the car.

The U1 Support will eliminate the need for this, and the phone will be able to stay in your pocket.
