Apple supplier BOE recently converted one of its factories in China in order to manufacture larger OLED displays for devices beyond smartphones, including tablets and computers, according to Korean website The Elec.

The report claims that BOE is likely aiming to supply OLED displays for future iPads, after becoming a supplier of iPhone 13 displays last year. The repurposed factory will be able to manufacture up to 15-inch displays, but it remains to be seen if Apple ever releases a 15-inch iPad. In June 2021, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple had explored the idea of iPads with larger displays, but he said a release if any would be years away.

The factory will have the ability to manufacture OLED displays with two layers of red, green, and blue emission layers, the report added, which could lead to future iPads having significantly brighter displays. However, it remains to be seen whether BOE would succeed in commercializing these panels due to the complexity of the technology.

Apple currently sources OLED displays for iPhones from Samsung and LG, but it frequently attempts to diversify its supply chain to reduce the risk of relying on a single supplier and to secure competitive pricing.

It looks like BOE is doing the best it can to become Apple's one of the main suppliers. Being able to use the iPhone 13 PM for months, I think they have impressed Apple that they can get the job right. Hopefully, they can keep up with the order demand. Whatever Apple's going to ask for.
The Pro Max displays are made by Samsung.
It's the regular 13 models that have some BOE panels. Apple trying desperately to prop up Chinese companies.

I thought some of the Pro Max models were also built by BOE?

It also looks like things are coming together for BOE. This was all reported previously as well. As far as July, 2021. Mid 2022 is the target date for BOE.

All the Pro and Pro Max displays are high quality Samsung panels.
Most of the 13s are also Samsung. BOE is used for a small amount of non-Pro models as well as the refurbished iPhones.
BOE's quality is kind of questionable, but they're definitely much better than Japanese quality. Not as good as the Koreans, though.
Apple is propping up BOE to please China.

I wonder why when Tim Cook was expanding the supply chain to be in India.

Okay, does anyone know if all of this "for iphone 13" that BOE is reported to be supplying includes the mini? (Or is the mini all getting Samsung like last year?)

I would imagine a 15" iPad would be on the table only if Apple planned to expand iPad Pro capabilities. If the iPad Pro was somehow able top run richer pro-esque type apps , then yes it would be great. But if iPad OS remains stuck where it is now, then there is no point.

BOE has a small amount (~20%) and all/most of the refurbished ones.
Dang… I wonder if there’s a way to know if it’s BOE or LG or Samsung. This 13mini screen doesn’t seem as good as my 12 mini last year. (It’s been a year since having the 12 mini for about a week, but I don’t remember seeing pixels in the edges of letters: on the 13 mini I can)

Also, the True Tone on the iPad Air 4 is amazing!!! On this 13 mini, it’s really pitiful in comparison.

BOE will steal the technology. It's a shame that for all of its wokeness and human rights advocacy, Apple continues to do business with Chinese companies.
Not just BOE but many Chinese companies such as Huawei steal technologies from other countries and yet Chinese Gov protected them as they work closely to them so there is no way we can prevent that. Such a shame.

A 15" iPad would be cool. But Apple first needs to make a 15" MacBook Air.
A 15” iPad to me would strictly have to be in ‘desktop mode’. It’s just too large and unwieldy to use in similar fashion of ‘free handling’ it. I gather Apple is really trying to translate the iPad into more of a desktop application, but if we’re talking the size of a 15 inch display, most users won’t have a choice in the matter.

Please Apple don’t take too long bringing OLED to the Macs, it’s already taking forever while other makers have had it already for years now

I’m actually thinking of switching to a windows laptop for this reason, as much as I like the Mac and can’t stand windows

I see iPad OS as Apple's version of a touch based Mac OS. Mac OS can never have a touch screen because there is a loud orthodox sect of devout Mac cultists who would scream bloody murder if the Mac gained a touch screen .

Wait….are these the same people who claimed that Tim Cook would be removed when Apple introduced the Touch Bar? I’m just naturally curious where those people are now. Perhaps maybe they moved on to a Windows based device.

The article doesn't mention the #1 reason BOE is now "in play," the $275B USD "secret deal" that Tim made with the Chinese Gov't !

Also, makes me wonder if Apple has even hit $1B USD to U.S.-based manufacturers !

15 inch iPad! cool! I want one!
A 17 inch would be even cooler!
The new 17 inch laptop with a touch screen! An iPad !!

THE NEW MACBOOK PRO M1 KILLER. it will cannibalize MacBook Pro sales.

Because China doesn’t care about low end and labour intensive sectors anymore. They are pressuring Apple to invest in R&D in China and source domestic components instead of importing everything for assembly. The keywords are “value-added” and “industrial upgrade”.

Or floor mode.

You put it on the floor and you lay on the floor to play with it.

Great with kids and for teaching.

Considering how much Apple makes in China, that’s pocket change. EU fines Apple publicly, China doesn’t. They negotiate under the table.
