The question is would he do more for the world spending it on the bill and melinda gates foundation or investing in technology.

It's a very easy answer.

Yap, iPad do more for the world than erradicating malary or tuberculosis.

Yapm is a very easy answer

I love how Jobs gets a pass from everyone on MR, but anyone else would be a greedy, selfish, capitalist. Jobs is the epotomy of a greedy, selfish, capitalist; but that is exactly why Apple is such a financial success.

You're an idiot. Apple is not successful because Jobs is greedy, selfish and capitalist. It is successful because it revolutionized our lives with innovative technology that "just works" and might I add, "works wonderfully" to better our lives.

The hate mongering commonly seen on newspaper comments section is trickling down to MR now.

The thing you also don't here about him doing is wasting large amounts of money on extravagant items like fancy yachts like so many royal princes or Paul Allen. It seems to me like he is the type that would rather accumulate money and donate anonymously as part of his estate.

malaria and tuberculosis aren't eradicated nor could they be with Job's money.

Also steve achieved much more than the iPad.

Please stop calling his wealth, "Fortune". The word fortune implies that there was luck or chance involved in the accumulation of wealth. There is nothing fortune about Steve's wealth. He worked hard, and earned all that money and he is not simply sitting on it. He has been using that money to innovate.

I have no doubt that Steve will invest his money in future scientific research for the advancement of technology.

I like the guy.

But it is fortune. There could be many other SJs in places like Africa but do not have the fortune to live in America, have food on the table, have an education etc.

All serious wealth like this has an element of luck.

In fact he has probably has had a lot easier work like than millions of others.

I love how so many people think they actually have a right to tell someone what to do with their money. I garuntee job's donates a TON of money, more money then we would all make in a lifetime, yet some still have the nerve to complain?

How much have you donated?

It's Steve's money, he gets to do with it as he pleases.

I don't understand why so many people in this country hate the rich. Steve put his rear on the line many times in the past and took exceptional risks. Without people like him and other wonderful American businessmen and women there'd be no innovation and the country would look like it belongs in the early 1800s.

People want to live a rich lifestyle but don't want to work hard for it. I used to manage a fast food restaurant in high school. I'd love how the employees who complained the most about being poor and life not being fair because their car broke down or they had trouble paying rent were the first employees to ask for days off or volunteer to go home early on slow days. They weren't reliable and I couldn't count on the loudest complainers to come in if I called them on their day off if it was busy or an employee called in sick.

You mean how when SJ came back he stopped the charity and even with their huge profits and cash in the back it has yet to be turned back on?

and out of the millions and millions of dollars that were donated to bono's charity, on $700,000 was actually used as aid, the rest spent on useless ****.

to conclude, jobs probably does donate, and bono is a ****.

thanks!

I think Jobs donates anonymously, I have more respect for people like that than the people who do donate but expect the plaudits for doing so. I donate to several charities but don't feel the need for everyone to know, I do it for the charities not for myself.

Steve Jobs is an intensely private man, he just doesn't like public attention so I am 99.9% sure that he donates to things anonymously as he doesn't like attention, and if he doesn't then big deal, his business no one else's.

Lack of evidence is not evidence.

Steve looks so, for lack of a better word, healthy in that photo. My immediate was, "look how fat his face looks." Then I realized that it simply illustrates his current condition. (And my other first reaction was, "Way to go Sony Bono! Wait, what!?! I thought he was dead!")

As far as the charity thing goes, to each his own. I don't want anyone telling me what to do with my money, and as long as Jobs is at peace with what he's doing the NY Times can shut the eff up.

Aren't we all? Unless you live in China

Would all the people here who are complaining about not having proof of him donating feel comfortable telling everyone here exactly how much they themselves have given?

I truly respect the philanthropy of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. They have done some amazing work not to mention raise awareness.

When it comes to Steve, I tend to be open-minded on this subject. How are we to know what he does, if he does anything at all? We just don't know.

Steve is an extremely private person, it is very possible that he has done a lot of philanthropy anonymously.

He likes the spotlight when it comes to tech... it appears that outside of that, not so much.

just because someone isn't bragging about it in public does not mean he is not giving money. I have more respect for people that give money without telling everyone how much they gave.

Wow. You respect me more than Gates!

I agree with 'action speaks louder than words'. We just do not know the action.

Sad thing is, if he did vocalise it, it would put more pressure on other rich people to commit to do the same. So for the sake of encouraging donations it is better to vocalise it. This would save lives. The acceptable cost is some may interpret it as showing off.

What if he doesn't donate at all?

I have no more or less respect for someone that donates money publically or anonymously. It is all good regardless. What I don't have respect for are people with simply celebrity status pushing their economical and social agendas on those that follow them.

I love how dumb people bash Steve for "not giving" yet they don't realize not everyone gives and then tells others about it. Its tacky to do that and makes it seem like one is giving for the attention and not for the cause.
