Bono...

...hitting below the belt against a guy who isn't around to respond.

The fact is a simple one, in order to make your products remain desirable, especially where it makes a contribution to great things, can obscure the desirability of the product with a logo.

Subtlety is important, modesty is important especially in a time where a great many things shout out hey "look at me" and the crassness associated with that culture. Not the market you want to necessarily go after but perhaps those who can think past themselves.

As for the cult of Apple. Well, the thing about that is quite simple, without the dedicated following of some of us on these forums product RED may not be the success it is. To add a final note about subtlety and modesty, you respect it a little more than some of the other things you see recycled again and again for great causes, they lose their appeal eventually.

Bono doesn't get it.

The subtlety of the (RED) branding on Apple's products only adds to their elegance and the brand's mystique.

It would be ugly and stupid to go splashing the branding loudly on the front of an iPad cover.

What Bono doesn't realize is that Apple users generally don't like huge logos splashed all over their products. Having that logo prominently placed on their device or accessory would result in lower sales, not higher. I have the red iPad Smart Case (which I love) and I know I wouldn't have purchased it with a giant logo.

Correction: What Bono doesn't realize is that Apple users generally don't like huge logos that isn't an apple splashed all over their products.;)

The parentheses are stupid and look ugly whilst serving no purpose. Glad jobs argued against them.

Death and Taxes

If only Bonio *cough* hair transplant *cough* was like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett - I don't see him paying his taxes or giving a percentage of his massive earnings to help other people - tosser!

Bingo. What a buffoon Bono is.

... his opinion on Bono being an idiot doesnt really require an explanation and you can demand all you want but he doesnt owe you one either.

You're are correct in that I am not anyone special in that I will be guaranteed an answer. But I don't think of it as a demand, I think of it as a request. I don't see "Bono's an idiot" as any better than "Apple makes overpriced junk."

Aside from that, If you take the context of his post which is in reply to an article about Bono and something Bono said, its pretty clear why he thinks Bono is an idiot.

Typically my modus operandi is to draw someone out to expose them to my viewpoint. A great many people who hate Apple, for example, do so because they're an easy target, they're popular, and a person read or heard something damning about them, and from that point forward, they see it as something they'll just be against by default. I put Bono in the same (though much less influential) category.

...maybe the original poster just didnt care enough (another theory is he just wanted to piss someone like you off)

Of that I have no doubt. :)

I <heart> Penny Arcade.

Anyone else mistakenly think the guy in the middle was Jony Ive? I was about to comment on his changes until the camera went to the wide shot and I realised it wasn't him at all.

What is the rule regarding when (product) goes in parenthesis and when (RED) goes in parenthesis?

bono demonstrated that what he cares about is branding, and not about money to do the work they want to do. They get plenty of brand promotion from apple, they just don't get brand promotion from the apple designed, and sold products. They just get the money.

Here's something to raise your awareness.

Number of people who died from Aids in the US - 15,000
Number of people who died from Diabetes in the US - 234,000

Why aren't we raising money to fight Diabetes?

(and don't say we know how to prevent diabetes, because we also know how to prevent Aids)

(Product) RED is more about politics than it is about helping people.

Bono needs to chill out. Nobody would know what (RED) is if it weren't for Apple. I've never seen another product outside of an Apple store that supports that charity.

No it's posters here that need to chill out. The audience laughed at Bono's comments. Heck, Jony Ive laughed at them. Y'all are taking his comments way to seriously. Bono was a good friend of Steve and Laurene. He even spoke at Steve's private memorial service. People criticize Apple here all the time. I don't see anyone telling them to chill out.

True. I mentioned that when responding to someone else. The main difference is Apple doesn't put their logos all over their products. Even on the smart cover he was complaining about the Apple logo is on the back and it's very subtle. The only product I can think of with a front-facing Apple logo is the iMac, which is small in comparison to the huge screen (I'm writing on one at work right now). Some companies are much worse with their branding. The product red logo is also not the best looking logo around. Apple's logo is simple and balanced.

The other thing that I think people miss is that the majority of people buying product red stuff are only buying it because it's a color they like. I only bought my red smart cover because I like the color. Is it cool that it's going to help charity? Sure. But I'm not the type of person to go out of my way to get a product that supports charity if it's something I don't need or even want. I just give actual money to charity and write it off on my taxes every year.

Is putting a (RED) logo on it really going to do anything? The name and logo don't exactly explain what the organization is.

There is this awesome new thing on the interwebs you can use when you need to find out more information about something!

https://www.google.com/

He is an idiot because he does not realize that putting logos everywhere simply is not in apple culture and neither does it match with the taste of their customers.

Maybe he got confused by all the huge glowing Apple logos you see everywhere?

So what you are actually saying is that Apple places the logo to maximise the number of people who see it when the device is actually in use?

----------

Lets see, I've bought Red for an ipad, an iPad mini (cover and case), a bumper, a mophie juice pack, but Bono's ingrate hypocritical statements make me think I'm about done.

Wow.. that's big of you.

you did say demand though - I now know what you meant. I agree with the comparrison of his statement.

Ah so we kinda did the same thing? was trying to feel out what you really expected to get out of your original post.

I <heart> Penny Arcade.

indeed... i need to catch up on reading some of the more recent ones..

Are yes, Bono criticising charity decisions, when his ONE foundation gives away something pathetic like under 2% of the donations they recieve to charitable causes.

This is what makes Bono an idiot:

"To date, Apple has raised approximately $70 million for (Product) RED, with 100 percent of that money going towards HIV/AIDS programs in Africa."

Stop the complaining, what other company is doing as much?

Yes, I wonder how many hours it takes Apple to make that amount of profit.

Hint: it's about 12 hours profit at current rates, donated over nearly 8 years - they are hardly breaking the bank.

They are an advocacy group - they were never setup to directly fund charitable causes.
