I don't have an issue with parenthesis. I've been in graphics a long time and have seen things repeated a bunch. What I do tire of is that horizontally oriented arc shaped graphic that many logos are afflicted with. Almost hilariously so. To the point that whatever brand has it as part of their logo really got sold a bill of goods. Like it came from Logos R Us.

First, both Apple and Bono can simply both donate $70 million in pocket change to any charity they want, so arguing about a gimmick like (Product) Red just makes them both look like *******s.

Second, Apple can do more for (Product) Red by ending the relationship and instead just donating $1 for every device sold and ask people at checkout which of, say, 10 noble charities they would like that $1 to go towards. Heck why not give $10 of Apple's excessive profit margin per device away to charities. Why ask consumers to buy a specific version of only a few specific products when the company can part with far more money to charity otherwise.

I think Apple could generate far more than $70 million for AIDS research, but also generate a heck of a lot of revenue to other charities, you know, maybe like cancer research?

It would be nice for Apple to become a little more openly charitable in general rather than relying on gimmicky product tie-ins for a color of a product nobody really wants.

Great post, but deep down, you know the answer. Limousine Liberals are the biggest collection of hypocrites on the face of the earth.

Bono is a wise man.

"Aid is just a stop-gap. Commerce [and] entrepreneurial capitalism takes more people out of poverty than aid. In dealing with poverty here and around the world, welfare and foreign aid are a Band-Aid. Free enterprise is a cure. Entrepreneurship is the most sure way of development.

Rock star preaches capitalism. Sometimes I hear myself and I just can't believe it."

Apple does pay its taxes. It just keeps its over seas profits in Ireland because to bring it to the US would tax it 30% which is ridiculous when it was never sold in the US.

No corporation in the US pays 30% taxes. On average the range is between 0 to 15% and 15% being the high side.

I think some people forget that there'd be mass starvation if it wasn't for our modified food supply. Still, keep studying it just to be responsible without flipping our lids at the same time.

Yes, exactly the right thing to do! Develop with a watchful eye. Stop all the anti-science attitude that prevents us from doing anything positive. USE science to make our world better and stop being cave people afraid of everything they don't have the education to understand. We don't need a second dark age. I understand why people are skeptical because there are so many people claiming to be qualified and spreading false information to further their own interests but that's just why we need to have multiple sources of information and multiple people checking each other's "facts" so that we can come to an accurate assessment.

He's talking about the specific repatriation tax to bring back profits made overseas, not overall taxes. It's currently 35% and much higher than most countries. Samsung doesn't pay nearly this much to bring US-made profits back to Korea so they have that advantage over Apple.

If you sell x product in china you deduct the Chinese tax from the us tax you would pay bringing the money into the USA. And with that said the taxes would still be much lower.

American companies pay nearly nowhere that the media wants to lead you to believe, I know several people involved in corporate and excise taxes. There are so many ways to skin the cat.

The reason companies do not want to repatriate the money into the USA is they use it for other purposes. Such as you can loan yourself money from the overseas hoard, and pay no taxes as long as you pay back that money within a certain timeframe. And the interest you charge yourself you can deduct it from your USA subsidiary taxes.

Who are these people that instantly come out of the woodwork just to bash Bono. The dude could be doing nothing like 99% of other celebrities. He could be doped up and drunk doing nothing, but instead he uses his star power to rally others to help those who cannot help themselves.

Grow the F-Up sheesh.

Considering Apple has raised the most money for product red, I don't think he should be complaining.

I think his point is valid. It not just about getting the money, its about spreading awareness. If someone walks in and buys the nice fancy red colour case (for the colour, not for being a Red product) and the logo is hidden then its one less person to possibly know about the charity.

No one, who works professionally with branding, design and logo design likes the idea of putting any logo within a parenthesis.

Are you a designer or just speaking for designers? The parenthesis symbolize the "all inclusive embrace of humanity" The human race coming together to help one another. You should probably take a longer and broader look at the over all picture. I am a Senior Art Director at the agency I work for and happen to think the Product Red campaign as a whole is executed quite nicely (photography, print, web, various bits go collateral...).

And if they don't sell it at all, that's no money to it AND one less person who might know about the charity.

Has anyone seen what Jim Dalrymple of The Loop just posted on this?

"Great to see Bono calling Apple out on their “understated” approach to this issue. But you’ll see that change within six months."

If you know anything about Jim is he has connections to the highest levels of Apple and they leak to him anything they want in the tech press, often as the Apple "counterpoint" to another media attack. Clear something significant is in the works or he doesn't post this...

What I find interesting is that, to this day, Apple still doesn't conform to the standard (PRODUCT) RED trademark style.

For all other brands, the name of the brand or product goes inside the parenthesis.

So: (beats)RED, or (JONATHAN ADLER)RED. (Yeah, the "RED" should be superscript, but I don't know how to do that on this board...) Or the company's logo inside the parenthesis, as with Starbucks and kidrobot.

Whereas Apple just makes the item red, and calls it the "(PRODUCT) RED" edition.

By "proper" (PRODUCT) RED branding, it should be (iPod)RED or :)apple:)RED.

The only problem I have with this is that it was seriously the wrong place and moment to be preaching this. It seems like everyone had so many issues with Jobs, yet they've waited years after he's died to speak out about it.

I like the RED program, and it has helped raised lots of money, but I'm in the same set of people who don't want that affiliation noted on my sleeve. I would probably donate more to charities if they weren't so stuck on selling us things with words and logos plastered all over.

Hardware is different, and in this case Apple's logo is easily out of sight on our phones once you put a case, or even put your hands on the back of it. Not so much as say Amazon, who has cleverly slapped theirs on at the very top and is using customers as walking billboards.

The iPods that were sold years ago, are most likely still cherished by those who bought them still. The smart covers will be on people's iPads for years to come to. That makes a bigger statement than say a "Make Poverty History" wristband which most people have probably gotten rid of by now.

You have to look at it from a different perspective. The people who liked the RED iPods/bumpers/cases/etc people were carrying around probably looked them up on Apple's website and got introduced to the message it represented. You can't get any better than that.

Nice try. I am sure you also understood that the OP refers to stickers (Intel, audio hardware, OS) on laptops etc. where there are clearly visible when using the product. And yes, I avoid products that have a huge logo, like USB hubs, docking stations, etc. The average Windows laptop looks close to this:

I agree! I will never buy a windows machine because the effort to remove an intel inside sticker is to much!

When I encounter people who like to trash others at their leisure, I usually demand more than a hit and run from them.

Care to expound on what makes him an idiot?

I cant speak for the original poster (and i am not agreeing or disagreeing with his opinion), but his opinion on Bono being an idiot doesnt really require an explanation and you can demand all you want but he doesnt owe you one either. I am sure he has his reasons for this, and judging by his "hit and run" nature they could be so serious he doesnt even feel like wasting his time explaining cause that would be validating his idiocy.

Aside from that, If you take the context of his post which is in reply to an article about Bono and something Bono said, its pretty clear why he thinks Bono is an idiot.

I should think Bono would be the first to point out that it's the donations that matter, not branding.

This is a much more subtle way to call Bono an idiot, and does give an explanation as to why, but again maybe the original poster just didnt care enough (another theory is he just wanted to piss someone like you off)

another posibility:
http://knowyourmeme.com/memes/greater-internet-****wad-theory
(fill in the * with the f word for the link to work - stupidity at its finest, cant post a working link because it had the word **** - which is only a bad word that you feel needs to be censored because you are making it one by censoring it - its just a word)
