Post your problem in the appropriate forum if you expect to get any help. ;)

I don't know personally, but post on the correct forum and you're bound to get an answer. :D

I'm a complete Mac n00b (in fact I don't have one, but I'm considering a MacBook Pro)...

I'm very interested in experiences around using Firewire soundcards, since I do a lot of home recording etc. I currently use an M-Audio FW1814. I've seen these problems of poor FW soundcard response under bootcamp in other forums (Cakewalk Sonar etc). Two resolutions were offered: 1) Turn off the wireless system - searching wireless networks can cause stutters and interference. 2) Apply the Windows XP patch to roll back the Firewire "drivers" to pre-SP2 state. MS patch here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...07-18B5-4112-8BD6-8BF4BD3130B9&displaylang=en

As I say, I've no way of knowing if this will apply to y'all, but I'm interested to see if it does. Please let me know...

All the best,
Mike

Just my two cents, but if you're going to make the jump to a MBPro, and you do quite a bit of audio recording, you will really be best served to make the investment into Logic or Pro Tools to do your recording. There's a reason the recording industry is dominated by Mac hardware and software in this regard... save yourself the headaches and just make the switch wholesale - you'll be happier in the longrun.

That said, I've heard mixed reviews about the use of USB/FW peripherals within Bootcamp, but each time they release an update or patch, more and more of these issues get resolved. Don't be turned off by your Windows experiences... Apple actually does offer regular updates and fixes, and they actually do fix what they purport to fix. There's also the option of using Parallels, which I can say from personal experience is really remarkable software - in fact I know this sounds counterintuitive but I'm tempted to say it runs Windows faster than most machines do natively!

Anyway, best of luck and if you decide to make a go at your new Macbook Pro, congrats and welcome to party.

P.S. You also might want to consider holding off for just a few more weeks if you're serious about the switch. In all likelihood, there will be some product updates in the next 4-6 weeks, so if you're not in a rush I'd see what comes down the pipe in February/March before making a big purchase.

Now that's just inflammatory Mac vs PC talk! ;) Seriously though, I'm familiar with Cakewalk Sonar's workflow, so I'd be much happier sticking with that. I have been a computer audio guy for some time and to be honest I reckon the Mac vs. PC split for audio is much more equal now. Having said that, it's probably because I've been frequenting PC-based forums!

Interesting. Parallels looks like a fairly neat way of getting around some immediate issues with needing access to PC-based software. I'll need to look into how it works...

Thanks for the welcome... I'll stay tuned.

Yes, I'm in no hurry. I'd like to see what folks think about Leopard and the "official" release of Bootcamp.

help!! I'm really new to macs and today when I installed XP home edition through bootcamp (latest version 1.1.2??) and it was fine until I installed the MAC drivers CD.

My macbook installed all the software and then restarted itself (as according to plan in "installation and setup guide") but when windows loaded I couldn't access anything. My trackpad wasn't working and neither was the keyboard (trackpad and keyboard built into the macbook). I tried connecting a mouse via USB but that didn't work either... I presume that the security settings of Windows (home edition, includes service pack two) wouldn't allow me to access the mac peripherals etc.

Did anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it!?!

Special thanks to MKS21471

Thanks to MKS21471. I have a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo running Boot Camp 1.1.2, and I've tried 3 different Firewire audio interfaces under XP:

Alesis MultiMix16 Firewire
Presonus Firebox
Tascam FW-1804

None of them worked in any DAW software, but specifically not in Cubase4 or SX3. But after installing the 1394 update you recommended:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...07-18B5-4112-8BD6-8BF4BD3130B9&displaylang=en

The interfaces came right up and work perfectly!

Thanks so much for sharing that information.

All my best,

Matt

I know the problem you are having, I have it too. I tried many back-door ways into the XP environment and none worked. I have found a way that works for me, but I do not know if it is a true fix. I have a feeling that this problem is somehow related to wireless networks. I have a wireless network in my home, and the only way I can boot up XP is to turn off the wireless on my router. After doing this, my XP environment will boot fully and correctly. I can then enable my wireless and use it. Try this and see if it works!

It's pretty easy. Vista, on the other hand, isn't so easy in Boot Camp at the moment. If you're concerned with running Vista, I'd suggest you wait for Leopard to come out with the full version of Boot Camp. That will most likely officially support Vista, whereas the current Boot Camp beta only supports XP.

Vista is not a must it just would have been nice. What do you have to do to get XP home running then. If it's really easy and painless then i may give it a go although Getting a Mac was why i ditched windows in the first place

It's all in the Boot Camp installer. You run it, burn the needed drivers to a blank CD, create a partition, and put in the XP disc and reboot. From there you go through the typical Windows installation process. Once Windows is installed, you install the drivers from the CD and you should be good to go. So, not really hard at all.

Yes, starting up the Boot Camp Assistant again will give you the option of removing your Windows partition and re-merging that space back into your Mac partition.

Hey Mike,
thanks for sharing that info.

i am using an M-Audio FireWire Audiophile card with XP SP2 via Boot Camp.

Yep. Same problem as reported above. The sound keeps cutting in and out rendering it unusable and producing much frustration.

However, I'd like to confirm that simply disabling the wireless network system just as you suggested fixed the problem.

Cheers! :)
