Has anyone had a positive experience with BC 1.1.2?

My new c2d mbp arrived today - was looking forward to BC but all these negative reports make it sound pretty poor. Is there anywhere I can still download bc 1.1.1?

Mac Pro Windows install problem with GForce7300 - success at last!

Here is an update to my previous post #124.

After reading some other readers very comprehensive description of his attempts to get his 23" ACD using the X1900XT card. It gave me a few ideas which eventually helped. Here's the detail.

After reading the other readers detailed testing of different combination to try to get his 23” ACD to work, I decided to try two things that he mentioned. Firstly, I moved the DVI connector from my 21 Viewsonic LCD from the right DVI port (as seen from the rear of the Mac Pro) to the left port as he seem to imply that it was the primary port and secondly, I replaced the standard, but non-apple, 2 button mouse with the one button(?) mouse that came with the Mac Pro and plugged it into the USB connector on the front of the computer.

Voila! :D

I actually managed to get through and setup Windows, install the Mac drivers and the Windows Viewsonic driver (although it wasn’t needed because the nVidia driver from the Mac driver disk could get the relevant resolution information from the screen). I then rebooted (fingers crossed) and sure enough while the screen was blank during the initial Windows boot process, eventual up it came with the Windows splash screen and loading indicator and then the welcome menu. After testing the functionality of the network and internet, installing a USB HP printer & driver, plugging in and checking a combo USB/firewire hub, and a few applications and playing around for a bit and checking as much as I could, all appeared to be working well and stable except that device manager is reporting that it needs the Intel® 5000 Series Chipset PCI Express x4 device drivers. This was already common knowledge so I left it for later as it was not needed at this stage and it didn't affect the exising Windows functionality and stability.

Finally, I did a shutdown and reboot, and after a brief period with a blank screen with some hard disk activity noise, up came the Windows splash screen and a successful boot.

I now tried replacing the apple single button mouse with the 2 button mouse while Windows was running and it work fine. However, after attempting to reboot with it still plugged in, I was back to the same old original scenario of blank screen and a failure to boot up. Unplugging the 2 button mouse and replacing it with the apple 1 button mouse had no effect on fixing the problem. Eventually I discovered, that by unplugging the DVI connector from the back and the re-plugging it back in, I was able to get back to my reliable bootup sequence with the 1 button apple mouse.

After much further testing, including trying another 2 button mouse from a different manufacturer to no avail, my conclusion is that there is something REALLY flaky with either the bootcamp BIOS emulation or USB harware implementation that stuffs up the detection of devices, eg keyboard, graphic card, that prevents the initial boot process from proceeding when a 2 button mouse is connected. This might be timing related, but this is only a guess.

It also appears I might have a similar boot up problem when there is a CD in the optical drive but more testing is needed to confirm this.

No matter how clean the install goes, I just feel dirty trying to use Windows on my Macs. I can't bring myself to do it. The only reason I ever need Windows is for web testing, and in that case an old piece of junk craptop running XP more than does the job.

any way to install Windows XP without Service Pack 2?

nope. however if you do a search of google or even these forums, you can find instructions of how to slipstream, or combine, a SP2 download file onto a single disc with windows XP.

so if all you have is an older version of winXP, you can still use it for bootcamp, but you'll need to do this extra step first. Do a search for slipstreaming SP2, you should find instructions there

Aa.

Installing windows XP with service pack 1 worked for me, but then the installation program for the drivers from Apple, which come with boot camp, refused to install the drivers. It was possible to install some of them manually, but not everything and in the end it was quite a mess. So, while it is possible, I recommend to install Windows XP with service pack 2.

thanks for the tip... I'll give it a go tonight

crap! tried slipstreaming Service Pack 2 into Windows XP, then tried to install and I keep getting the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH. Can't get disk out and can't switch back over to MacOS. Eject button doesn't work during start up and Function keys don't work either.

Help anyone?

Try holding the mouse button (or trackpad button if you use a laptop) while switching on the machine until the disc is ejected. If this doesn't work, hold the option key immediatly after switching on the machine, which should result in a selection screen a few seconds later where you can select between the windows and mac os installation.

well it is in Beta stage, My uncle installed this earlier, and i visited him earlier, he uses an old apple pro mouse as he doesn't like the mighty mouse (don't ask why), but apple has removed pressing the right apple button to function as a right click (i think thats what he said) any ideas, well i suppose it serves him right for installing windows on a mac, but thats another story, and he can't use the mighty mouse as i've got it

thanks

thanks 2ndPath... got the disc out.

originally had Windows XP w/SP2 Home installed and tried to update it with an older Windows XP Pro w/SP2 slipstreamed onto the same disc... ended up crashing everytime with the slipstreamed disc ---> BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH

I dunno is this was because the slipstream process was faulty or if it won't work unless you do a clean install... dunno if I want to go through the hassle of finding out :(

EDIT:
removed Windows XP partition and restarted BootCamp from scratch, then installed Windows XP Pro from slipstreamed SP2 disc and it works fine (so far)
Guess you can't just "update" Windows XP Home w/SP2 to Windows XP Pro w/ slipstreamed SP2... live and learn :p

I heard file transfer simple if bigger particition

Hello,
Just bought a mac bk pro and the tipping point for me to switch from windows was boot camp and parallels.

That said, some of the posts worry me a little bit.

A few people complained about not being able to transfer files. I heard from a techy that if you have a particion over XX size that you can drag and drop files. (I forget the size - want to say 27g maybe)

My major question is, due I have to format my entire HD before I instal boot camp for the first time? Should I wait on installing new software if I will have to reinstall it again after I use boot camp?

Thanks all,

Boot Camp will make a Windows partition without erasing your Mac one.

As for the file transfer, Windows has two different ways it can format it's partition. You choose which one you want when installing Windows.

If you choose FAT then you'll be able to read and write the Windows partition when booted in to Mac. If you use NTFS, you'll only be able to read while in Mac. But the catch is, FAT can not be bigger than 32GB.

Enjoy your new comp!

boot camp audio report

tested all audio apps on brand new 15" c2d MBP

all audio interfaces work perfectly under osx

boot camp windows xp has a single bug

the firewire audio interfaces tested do
not seem to behave properly under xp
with the exception of the motu 828

the motu 828 does work but only under
maximum buffer settings, bringing latency
up to 42 ms. just glad my studio is working
under xp with this card, as it is my main one

these are the firewire audio interfaces tested

all of them basically skip the sound
in the most annoying possible way

m-audio firewire 410
m-audio firewire audiophile
motu ultralite
motu traveller
presonus firebox

increasing buffer settings to maximum did
not solve any issues like the motu 828

bottom line... my studio works perfectly right now
and i love this new MBP more and and more everyday

i hope these issues get solved so other audiophiles
can make the switch. feel lucky that my 828 is the
only thing that works flawlessly under both OS's

soon i will be testing a brand new
echo audiofire 2 firewire interface.
hoping this will be a portable solution
that will work under both platforms

anyone else out there having
similar issues under boot camp?

Does BootCamp support backlit keyboard?

Is there any hardware you loose compatibility with when running Windows on a mac?

Freezing in Setup

I have a MacBook and when I installed Boot Camp it partitioned my hard drive successfully, but when it came to the menu where you choose to "continue with Windows XP setup by pressing enter" or " press r to repair...", I pressed enter and it sat there doing nothing. I restarted it and tried it again, but it did the same thing. Does anyone have any information on how to fix this problem?

do i really need a 40GB partition to test vista? i have a 10GB i use for xp, will that be enough just to install vista?

I installed the Vista Beta on a partition of about 10GB and it worked. However, after the OS install, the disc was almost filled up completely: There were only about one ore two Gigabytes left. So if you want to install some applications, a larger partition is advisable.

yeah, i noticed after i installed it. aero works, but i cant get the mac drivers to open and install via the CD.

Positive feedback...for now

I was able to install Windows XP Home on my 20" 2.16 Intel Core 2 Duo Imac without a hitch. I just followed the printed document and the onscreen instructions (really, really carefully, being a newbie that I am). Had no problems installing the macintosh drivers and was very surprised at how the eject button on my mac keyboard worked right away. I may be late coming into the party, but hearing the Windows start up on a mac sounds really surreal.

The only problem I noticed so far in my short use of it was that my Wacom Tablet's cursor moves a bit erratic and not so smooth as in my Winbox. I've installed Flash 8 on it and am trying to do some heavy animation. I did install the wacom driver (though when I installed my wacom earlier prior to boot camp on OSX, it was even worse, and I had to download the latest driver for an Intel mac from Wacom's site) The motion of the Wacom is just not that 100% smooth.

My PC has been unreliable as of late and I was going to attempt to use Winxp on my iMac as my primary for my animation work, but stopped short as I remember it being a beta. I am curious though if any out there is using it full time, without any hitches.

hi!I have a mac book pro(intel)17" 2.16 GHz .I have motu fireware 828.

motu 828 audio interfaces work perfectly under osx but I have some problems with boot camp windows xp.

the audio device doesn't work...with all applications(cubase,sound forge,fruity loops,live ecc)
for me is very important work with this boot camp set up.

the question is...why?

we have the same laptop...and same audio device!

witch version of motu drivers do you have?

witch is a problem on your opinion?

what can I try to solve this issue?

sorry for not perfect english!

i installed windows xp on an intel iMac 20".

i've got an m-audio firewire audiophile.

the sound skips. and makes my audio apps unusable.

have you found anything at all about this issue, and whom
should we report this bug? apple?? it seems to be a problem
with the basic I/O functions, perhaps there is a problem with
the drivers for motherboard, and/or firewire...

when i'm doing network transfers or reading from cd-rom
the sounds is broken completely. this is really sad for me as
i thought it would work being an external device.
