Mac Pro Windows install problem with GForce7300 - success at last!
Here is an update to my previous post #124.
After reading some other readers very comprehensive description of his attempts to get his 23" ACD using the X1900XT card. It gave me a few ideas which eventually helped. Here's the detail.
After reading the other readers detailed testing of different combination to try to get his 23” ACD to work, I decided to try two things that he mentioned. Firstly, I moved the DVI connector from my 21 Viewsonic LCD from the right DVI port (as seen from the rear of the Mac Pro) to the left port as he seem to imply that it was the primary port and secondly, I replaced the standard, but non-apple, 2 button mouse with the one button(?) mouse that came with the Mac Pro and plugged it into the USB connector on the front of the computer.
Voila!
I actually managed to get through and setup Windows, install the Mac drivers and the Windows Viewsonic driver (although it wasn’t needed because the nVidia driver from the Mac driver disk could get the relevant resolution information from the screen). I then rebooted (fingers crossed) and sure enough while the screen was blank during the initial Windows boot process, eventual up it came with the Windows splash screen and loading indicator and then the welcome menu. After testing the functionality of the network and internet, installing a USB HP printer & driver, plugging in and checking a combo USB/firewire hub, and a few applications and playing around for a bit and checking as much as I could, all appeared to be working well and stable except that device manager is reporting that it needs the Intel® 5000 Series Chipset PCI Express x4 device drivers. This was already common knowledge so I left it for later as it was not needed at this stage and it didn't affect the exising Windows functionality and stability.
Finally, I did a shutdown and reboot, and after a brief period with a blank screen with some hard disk activity noise, up came the Windows splash screen and a successful boot.
I now tried replacing the apple single button mouse with the 2 button mouse while Windows was running and it work fine. However, after attempting to reboot with it still plugged in, I was back to the same old original scenario of blank screen and a failure to boot up. Unplugging the 2 button mouse and replacing it with the apple 1 button mouse had no effect on fixing the problem. Eventually I discovered, that by unplugging the DVI connector from the back and the re-plugging it back in, I was able to get back to my reliable bootup sequence with the 1 button apple mouse.
After much further testing, including trying another 2 button mouse from a different manufacturer to no avail, my conclusion is that there is something REALLY flaky with either the bootcamp BIOS emulation or USB harware implementation that stuffs up the detection of devices, eg keyboard, graphic card, that prevents the initial boot process from proceeding when a 2 button mouse is connected. This might be timing related, but this is only a guess.
It also appears I might have a similar boot up problem when there is a CD in the optical drive but more testing is needed to confirm this.
