Great manual and Apple crapped up disk utility so much in el capitan that your manual doesn't work anymore.

Any idea how I get the 840 EVO update on my DVD less Mac Mini server? I have 2 840EVO's in there needing the update.

Sincerely,

Patrick
That's quite an annoyance...

I'll try the rufus method which seems much simpler if I ever need to do it again.

I did use Rufus, the key will boot but then gets stuck after boot with a dos error

Hey... I could really use that file you had... its no longer in that Dropbox folder... I am trying to use do the same update for my 840 Pro SSD. thank you :)

Hey for some reason.. i get a prompt at step 23 (Restoring "rEFIT" to Mac OS Journaled Partition 2) that says, "Could not restore - invalid argument"... any clue what I'm doing wrong? i don't have a thumb drive, so i am using a extra large HDD in replace. i am following instructions verbatim other than that tho... please help haha... thanks

Albeit an old thread, I'd lie to thank you very much for these instructions - I was able to update the firmware on a Samsung 840 Evo which would not work using Samsung Magician (where it was falsely stated that the most current firmware was already running).

A few notes for others who want to try this:
  1. On High Sierra's Disk Utility, you cannot properly partition the USB stick. I did it with the Terminal command diskutil partitionDisk diskN 2 MBR fat32 "PART1" 50% fat32 "PART2" 50% (with N being the number of the USB drive as per diskutil list) - this gives you a Master Boot Record partition table with two MS_FAT32 partitions of equal size.
  2. Also in High Sierra's Disk Utility, there is no 'repair' function. Use First Aid instead.
  3. Before you insert the Samsung Firmware ISO file into the SYSLINUX partition, you have to delete it - I used ALT-File-Delete Immediately
  4. I had success only with a 15" MBP 2012, but not with 2010 models

I will later see whether I have luck with a Crucial M550 SSD as well - this one is also recalcitrant to firmware updates...

Again, great thanks to the group here and particularly to @snaky69!

Update: I could not create a bootable USB drive with Crucial Firmware using this method - the firmware file is a lot larger, and I would always get a 'to little space' warning for the mounted SYSLINUX volume (if only I knew a way to increase the size of mounted volumes...).

Old thread, I know, but thanks to it I could restore another pair of 1 TB Samsung 840 Evo SSDs. The boot screens of the USB look a bit different to me than poster here, thus I decided to share them:

Upon 'option' + power (select 'rEFit'):
rEFit Bootscreen 1.jpg

Then choose 'legacy boot':

Just a thank you to all who contributed here!
