I spoke with a sales rep TODAY who said if I put an iphone on my account before the 11th it would make me eligable for the upgrade as long as the iphone was not registered under another account. The only problem is that the person who actually owns the iphone will not be able to get any kind of discount after i use it. I had to get a new sim card in order for it to work though.

On another note, the rep had just gone through the"iphone class" and said any discounts currently on an account WILL remain on the account.

Hope this helps
:D:apple:
Interesting information, however the information is incorrect. First, you do not need a new SIM if you have a current valid and active AT&T SIM.

Second part, the "Upgrade Eligible" status is the on the line of service. It does not matter what GSM phone you have your SIM in on July 11. The store reps will just look in OPUS and see if you are "Upgrade Eligible", if the system shows you "Upgrade Eligible" you get the $199/$299. If OPUS shows that you are NOT "Upgrade Eligible", the rep will tell you when your line of service will be "Upgrade Eligibe" and then they will offer to sell you the iPhone 3G for $399/$499.

The discount discussion really depends on what the rep ment by discounts on the account. Is this a FAN discount comment?

That's not quite the point. I am not eligible currently, but if I register an iphone on my account before july 11th I will then be eligible for the lower price. I was given the sim card so that I would not have to put all of my information on to the temp iphone. So there for the information is in fact;) correct.

Anyone know if this iPhone user upgrade eligibility will go away sometime after July 11th?
It will go away as of July 11! You have to have completed your activation of the iPhone by July 10, if you want to use it's "Upgrade Eligibility" on July 11 or later to purchase the iPhone 3G.

This is to support the AT&T / Apple idea that you are going to "hand-off-your-phone" using their term. This is really to close the iPhone recycling loophole. It will also prevent your from purchasing an iPhone 3G and then activating your iPhone again and reseting your "Upgrade Eligibilty" again to purchase another iPhone 3G or another phone.

That's good news since most store reps and many others across the internet claim that you always need a new SIM to activate an iPhone. We battle that "Urban Myth" often. Did you get any further clarification on the account discounts topic?

Please see my other post about the fact that this must be done by July 10 to work. Once you activate the iPhone via iTunes, it only takes the system less than 15 minutes to register that you have an iPhone on the line and you should now be "Upgrade Elgibile" when you check your upgrade status online us (OLAM). :)

I explained to the rep that I viewed the "ATT eyes only" hand out that was posted here. I told her that it stated that monthly service discounts would not be accepted with the iphone. She said that she had just finished the "iphone class" that all the sales reps were required to attend and that the discount would remain. She seemed very sure of that particular aspect of the plan. I will have to wait and see if she is full of crap.

Oh sorry! I should have been more specific. I meant do previous iPhone users (who currently have an iPhone activated on their account) who are eligible for the upgrade to get the $199/$299 price..if they have to upgrade before a certain time period? Like does the offer for first generation iPhone users to get the $199/$299 price expire?

I'm about to try this today at work. Someone at work has the iPhone and she has no intent on upgrading anytime soon.

So I plan to install iTunes, remove sim card, put my 3G sim card in, no restoring, connect to computer, activate plan, skip any new sync, wait for phone to activate (really the sim), then give back the iPhone tand her data, contacts, etc. should still be the same.

Only thing I'm worried about is if her eligibility is compromised, or her data is lost. Like say even if you both show eligibility, when I upgrade on the 11th, could it possible notice we had both iPhones and set hers to not eligible anymore. If so, that would be bad for anyone that sold their iPhones months again, and the person that bought it upgrades before they do.

But since again, she doesn't plan to upgrade, that's my least worry, but I'll mention the possibility to her. If she had no subsidized phone before the iPhone, she'd be eligible no matter what. I'm more worried about if iTunes decides to erase everything on her phone. I don't know if she will have backed it up, even though I suggested it. And while itunes auto backs up every sync, that's only the recent version of itunes I think, she may have an older version.

in a similar situation and i'm planning to do the same, let us know how it goes

Whoops, I posted my result hours ago, but I posted it in the wrong thread, my bad.

Here's how it went:

1: Shutdown friends iPhone
2: Removed her sim card.
Note: I did not restore, I left all her stuff on the iPhone
3: Inserted my sim card (ATT and has 3G on it)
4: Turned it on once for good measure, but shut it off
5: Connected it to the computer, it auto turned on the iPhone
6: iTunes loads up activation screen.
7: Followed steps, and stopped at the part where you sync the iphone.
8: I disconnected the iPhone and ATT already activated my sim nearly instantly.

Then I checked my ATT account online right away. It already showed I'm now eligible for discount. No sign of my November 8th date from before. Oddly, still shows my Sony phone though.

I've since then put my friends sim card back in. Shows ATT at top so it still works for her. All her data seems to still be there, her number worked when I called it. And it's been on for the last hour and my account still shows I'm eligible. Don't know about her account, she's gone at the moment I bet she doesn't an online account yet.

EDIT: There may be an issue with ATT's online causing all accounts not showing eligibility

Wait, I now have an issue.

I noticed I had an e-mail from iTunes saying:

Congratulations, AT&T has successfully activated your iPhone service.
If you have not done so already, please connect your iPhone to your computer now to complete this activation.

What does that mean? It was already connected to the computer when the activation was done.

So I decide to check my account again. Now it shows I'm not eligible again. Though, the data plan and 200 text is still on my account. What's up with this? It shows I have my old phone on my account, I haven't turned it on since doing the activation with the iPhone. And when my sim was in the iPhone, I had turned it on and off and it was working with ATT, showing it at the top of the screen, so it was activated.

Was I suppose to connected it one more time?. Should I manually change the device on my account to an iPhone? I can't imagine the activation failing for not reconnecting it to the computer after you were done activating it, and easily missing that e-mail for a day.

I was planning on trying the same thing...

While I'm not a current AT&T customer, I wanted to get the activation out of the way so I'm not stuck in the new activation line on the 11th. I'm not porting any number over and just plan to use this phone as a 2nd phone.

I was going to take my sister's iphone, who's unit is unlocked on t-mo and sign up for a new account on itunes.

Any idea if this will work? My objectives are to shorten the wait time on the 11th and make sure I can still buy the new 3g iPhone at $299 (16gb).

Thoughts?

Thanks :)
