I picked up my 13" base MBP this morning. I have a 3.5 year old 15"MBP which I have donated to my children for school work, garageband etc. I love the portability of this and couldn't afford the 15". In two years, I shall probably donate this to them and get a new 15". It is much snappier than my older machine, the trackpad and screen are much improved, graphics probably similar (I don't game much anyway), but the battery - woah! I think it's horses for courses. There's no way you would get me back to windows ;)

It's the perfect computer for me and for 3 years to come, so I'm happy, and not spent any more than I needed to.

I Ordered It!

I have this exact model on order. Due for delivery on thursday. I choose to have iWork preinstalled. Mistake, it is now taking so much longer to be delivered.

Has anyone tried WoW on their new 13"? That is the only game I would ever think about playing since I have a PS3, so I am curious how it runs.

I'm not happy with mine and plan to go back to the apple store to see if I can exchange it with one that works properly.

The 2.66GHz MBP runs about 10 degrees hotter than the 2009 2.26GHz it replaces ( old one got damaged ), and on start up it reaches nearly 60 degrees C and the fans kick in. Takes it about a minute or so for it to cool down but even then when ever I have flash intensive site open(youtube) plenty of the CPU is used. I know flash sucks on mac and it supposed to hog the CPU, but hog more CPU then on the 2.26GHz?

Last thing I'm hating is how loud the 320 GB HD is. My standard 160 GB HD was dead silent. This one has a whirring sound that is constant as long as the computer is running, HD doesn't seem to sleep when it isn't in use.

Anyone have similar experiences as mine?

I hate you.

Mainly because you have what I want now =P

You are basically me about a month from now? Exams are getting in the way of life atm, so I am putting of getting a Macbook Pro, but you have just confirmed that I Want the new 13" model.

Thanks for the post - and I will be checking out your video

What he said, except I'm hoping to order mine next week. I wanted to order it this week, but people who won my auctions on ebay are dragging their feet on payment. :(

Love hearing these stories of people buying their first Macs, and how amazed they are. If I'm jealous of anything, it's that feeling more than anything else.

You'll hopefully find that your laptop lasts much longer than a cheapo PC equivalent and stands the test of time really well. My MBP is over 3 years old and I still love it.

Congrats on your purchase.

I know, I miss the old days when I thought my PowerBook G4 was the fastest thing in the world.

Now I'm jaded and quickly getting tired of Apple as a company.

Maybe getting a 13" will help me feel better, even if it does have a 2 year old CPU and a mirror for a screen.

I know how you feel. I'm on the edge but I don't want another 2-3 years of Core 2 Duo.

I do like the new nVidia GPU but it's not enough. I might just get a M11x if it gets a Core i5 UM this summer.

It's not as bad for me, since I'm going from G4 to Core 2 Duo, but if you're already coming from a C2D it's a crappy situation.

There's always a Thinkpad T series. I've seen a sale on the i5 T410 putting it at around $900. Something to think about; I know I've been thinking about it.

I've seen the reviews for the M11x. The only major complaints that I've seen are the mushy but passable keyboard. I like the smaller 11-13" form factor when it comes to a notebook and I'd pick GPU power over an optical drive.

The current CULV processors are passable but I want to see Core i5 UM. I seriously would rather give my money to Apple over alternatives but Apple doesn't offer what I want.

I like OS X but endearing just doesn't get you to spend like it did a few years ago. I only use my Macbook for browsing in bed and having a portable Mac. I don't really like Apple's desktop selection.

It may seem like that, but the fact is it doesn't. Processors don't make any noise at all, and efficiency is only a byproduct of speed. It is a slower, older processor. That doesn't make it a bad computer, just makes it an average computer running a great operating system.

You bought a computer that works for you. It's better than your old computer and you enjoy using it. That's great, but don't make silly claims that simply aren't true (even if you "think" they are).

But I'll say it again, it suits YOUR needs, and meets YOUR expectations, so be happy with it, and don't worry about why other people don't like it. Everyone has their reasons.

You watered that down very nicely sir!

There are a lot of people here who would have ripped him a new one and just totally killed all hope. But you did a good job much better than I would have done.

On topic, I'm hoping to get that exact machine, I'm holding off till the back to school deal. It's killing me though I want it NOW! :p

I went to the Apple store today after school and I got my very first Mac, the 2.4 GHz, 250GB HD, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 320m graphics, 10 hour battery, 13" screen Macbook Pro.

I got the Education discount because my friends mom bought it for me (with my money), it is well worth the money. I am loving this computer, I have done HD movie editing, Photo editing, surfed the web, and made a DVD all at once and the battery is still 90% full, (the inertial scrolling is stunning) This computer is my dream computer, i could not see it any other way. The processor is new and fast, Much faster than my grandma's new 2.66 GHz Core i5 HP Windows desktop with 8 Gigs of RAM and WAY the heck faster than my 4 year old Compaq 1.73 Ghz Intel Celeron M in the laptop.

I have been reading the forums and have seen MAJOR criticism on this model of laptop, just due to the processor itself. Like how "it was the same processor in the old 15 inch macbook pro in 2007" Well i would like to tell those people that it is really different! back in 2007 (a long time right?) the 2.4 ghz processor in the Macbook pros cost up around $3000, with older non-snow leopard software.

Well Why so hesitant to buy?
It is a great computer, the unboxing will be in HD on YouTube shortly. while i typed this, i lost maybe 1% of battery...

Any questions on the model?
I would recommend this to anyone its a great piece of machinery!

I AM NOW AN OFFICIAL MAC!

Big congrats on the MAC!

I also just bought the "little" 13" MBP and love it. The new back-lite display is outstanding! Lot's of other nice refinements and an outstanding value purchase.

The performance wanks don't know S from shinola .......... this little baby is fast enough for nearly any home use.

cheers

I know, it seems like more and more Apple doesn't offer the products that I want. Plus, with Windows 7 and the possibility of hackintoshing now, alternative laptops and desktops are starting to look very attractive.

That said, I'm waiting for the reviews to come in on the 13" MBP. If it can get anywhere near it's 10hr advertised battery life, I'm all for it; that's like netbook-quality battery life.

BUT the reviews aren't in yet.

I bought the original unibody macbook and even though I knew it had a cruddy screen, it was love at first bootup. :)

Enjoy the moment for all it's worth!

Funny thing is the more you know about the laptop internals, etc. The more things you find to complain about, etc. Then the next revision came out, slight bump in processor speed, better screen, backlit keyboard. Got to get it! This revision slight bump in processor speed, more RAM, better graphics.... Got to get it!

Welcome aboard the Apple gravy train, where Apple will tempt you with tiny ass improvements to entice you to buy the new one!

Disregard this, I just ordered one.

At this point, even an iPad would be an improvement over my 12" PowerBook. ;)

I walked to the register at our local BB today (closest mothersh:apple:p hub is 2 hours) with one in hand for this very reason. I walked out of the door withOUT it. Some rainy depressing day though..:p

Edit as I meant to say OP congrats on your new baby and welcome to the Mac fold. It's a great computer indeed and oh the first time you never forget it! This site is a pretty nice source as well with some good people around here, you just need to read between the lines now and again like any online forums. You'll enjoy that little beast for some time.

I'd be moving from a Core 2 Duo Santa Rosa notebook. I've had 4 GB of RAM and a 320 GB hard drive since 2007.

It sounds like a massive improvement for you though. :D

People want the impossible.

There isn't room in the 13" for the CPU, chip-set, discrete graphics, and a big battery. There's a very nice 13" with all three from a different company (I forget which), but it's a lot fatter, and Steve wants you to have a thin laptop.

So we are stuck with chip-set graphics. The i3 isn't much faster, and its graphics suck. The C2D with non-Intel graphics is fast enough, and the graphics are way better. People who deal with graphics will get a huge boost graphics programs start utilizing the GPU better. The chip-set you have is faster than a C2 Quad on some graphics heavy tasks, but you need software that is written using Grand Central, or something equivalent.

Personally, I think that people should move towards iMacs (they aren't that expensive, and they are much more powerful), and an iPad. But for a college student that might be just out of your price range.

It's a Core 2 Duo E7600 and a 9400M G. That's barely an improvement in the CPU department and a step backward for the IGP.
