Thanks for the Thread

Can't thank you enough for starting this thread. I've been thinking about buying apple care and iWork 09 from ebay. This discussion has helped assure me that it can be done.

is this one of those "code only" sales? or do you actually get the box which has a separate serial number on it? Not long ago there was a rather long thread about problems with ebay purchased "code only" applecare, so search the forum and read through it....and be aware that paypal wont cover you without physical goods being involved in the sale.

If you search for that thread you'll see that people are reporting that Apple has been cracking down and requiring at least some people to provide the serial number from the box as well as the registration code. They seem to have a problem with people using counterfeit codes.

So proceed with caution

edit; here's the macrumors thread;

and here's an ebay warning you should read;

thanks all for your comments.

i have emailed the seller numerous times pestering him, before filing a complaint with paypal, but i've heard nothing.

i have checked my junk box too, no email there.

normally i wouldn't be so quick to kick up a fuss with paypal, but as i've had no communication from the seller (for nearly a week), and the Applecare code can be emailed so easily (and promised within 24hours), it smelt fishy!

hopefully it'll come good as previous customers seemed to have had good service.

cheers

yes, there was a thread that should've been a sticky. Click the link at the bottom of my sig for some info on ebay scams

Just because one is a scam, doesn't mean they all are.

I'm willing to take a risk in order to save $100.

The risk isn't even that big, I can typically get my money back through PayPal.

Therefore, buying AppleCare off of eBay with discounted prices is worth it for me. For most people, its worth it too.

And yes, there was a thread. An eBay seller, MacMan812 came in, and told us about how he sells them. I have bought from him, and had a stellar experience. I would highly recommend him.

hey, if you want to risk having no warranty on your Mac, who am i to say not to. I am just trying to help point out the dangers. For me, spending $239 at the AppleStore, using my student discount for Apple Care on my MacBook Pro was worth it for peace of mind. I bought AC for my iPhone on eBay, and although i didn't have a problem, I also had no proof of purchase or anything.

finally received email from the seller (after paypal got involved over missing item!). he claims he'd emailed previously even though i'd received nothing (yes i'd checked junk folders too).

registered code online which went smoothly and i received confirmation certificate via email from Apple.

i asked him for the Applecare box serial number too (which is apparently important too).... he's emailed that across.

is there anything else i should be doing to confirm that i'm fully covered?! the thread says i should call Apple to confirm prior to leaving feedback and closing the ebay transaction?

my experience.... bit dodgy and i cant be certain that i'll be fully covered for 2 years.. but if it all works out ok i did save over a £100 by buying on ebay.

Actually you are up **** creek if apple cancels it after your initial 1 year so that your product wont be covered at all (which has happened to a few people), and then it will be too late to buy applecare (even a legit version) at that time. So a risk to save $100 could end up costing you a >$1000 repair further down the road.
