I purchased my 3GS on June 6th and trying to decide if I am happy with the current options the 3GS has versus the 4G. Have to make up my mind prior my 30 day return window is up. My AT&T rep said if your not happy with the 3GS return it and apply what I paid for my 3GS to the 4GS and alls I would have to pay was a restocking fee. I think he said the restocking fee was 10% so for me it would be around $30.00.

My 30 day window is up on July 5th, so if I decide to return it, I will return in around the 30th of June or the 1st of July. Hopefully, much of the rush for a new phone will have passed and I will be without a phone for a short period maybe even walk out of the store with a new 4G, plus I get to keep my data plan.

So it sounds like the AT&T Reps are at least consistent with what they put out to the public.

Well, both times I've walked into AT&T there werent more than 3 people there. Since I don't have anything planned for the summer (besides work, but thats in the evening), I think I'll return it a day or 2 before the i4 release (ensuring that my upgrade will be reverted back in time), and just get in line.

iPhone returns

Glad things worked out with your iPhone - FYI to others -

It is state law in CA that you can return a phone purchased within 30 days with no termination fee and no restocking fee. Other states may vary.

If you purchased an iPhone prior to June 1st which you have had more than 30 days, your termination fee is likely $175, which ATT may reduce depending on how long you have had the phone and your usage. Starting June 1st, ATT raised the termination fee to $325, which reduces $10/month.

Also, ATT is allowing anyone whose contract expires anytime within 2010 to upgrade to the new iPhone without a termination fee.

I was told by my AT&T rep as long as you preorder the new iPhone within the 30 days you will get the phone at the subsidized price. Provided you return your phone at the time you pick your new one up.

Ha. I first had an iPhone 3G on launch date. Then, the next year I purchased my iPhone 3GS on launch date too and I have been eligible for an upgrade since March 2010. Crazy right? I think I'll go with it. :p I am super happy I am upgrade eligible so early! I don't even think I have to pay the $18 dollar fee since I have been upgrade eligible for a long time.
