Finally got a photo up of the setup, what do ya think? It fits, luckily! =)

By the way, which Drobo NAS would you recommend? It should have a FireWire port.
Anything on this list worth looking at? I would prefer ordering from Amazon.co.uk as I am located in Europe.

What about a Synergy NAS?

I would like to have one which can go out to both my Mac Mini and iMac 27".

I'm extremely worried here, my iMac 27" is really hot. I know others have written about it, but am I safe in keeping it turned on with just the screen put to sleep?

For NAS you can't go wrong with Time Capsule. I just bought mine and it's really seamless.

I'd get a Synology DS211j over a Drobo, or a Time Capsule. It supports Time Machine backups, same as the TC, but also adds in a veritable host of other functions. Drobo's are just incredibly expensive and suffer from slow data transfer speeds, particularly for 'dumb' hard drive enclosures with RAID.

Connect it up with gigabit ethernet to your iMac and Mini for speed :)

They normally get a little warm...the result of putting all those components inside of a tiny little confined area. Also why they use laptop GPU's and ram.

If you've got applecare, don't worry about it. If you don't have applecare on an iMac, GET IT!!!

Just my personal opinion, of course.

OP is from Denmark so I wouldn't be that worried. We got pretty good consumer protection laws here in Europe/EU. For example here in Finland, the minimum lifespan for a computer is two years. The manufacturer/seller must repair it for free within that time. After that it varies depending on the price and other factors, but a computer like iMac should last at least three years.

If OP was from a country with no such legal system, that I would agree with you 100%.

That's perfectly normal :) The iMac case is a heatsink to itself, so expect it to get hot.

Oh, I'm a bit more calm now, because it really did get hot at the upper level behind it, I guess I can leave it on and not having to turn it off sometimes as I do now.

I'll take a look at the Synology DS211j!
I plan on having Time Machine on it to take back-up, also storing all of my movies for the Mac Mini and photos as well as apps for the iMac.

Yea, in Denmark I am automatically protected for one year, but I do plan on buying an Apple Care next year no doubt.

Would my iMac take any damage if the screen is swaying all the time? It does that everytime I press and write on the keyboard, probably because it's standing on a desk made of tree as you see on the photo. The aluminium stand won't break or anything, correct?

Edit:
Just took a look at the 'Synology DS211j' and it's not expensive at all, though, I have to buy the hard drives for it separately? So which of those you recommend? I'll just buy two 2.5" or 3.5" (which are better?) 2TB HDDs?

I just noticed like at least 6 large dead pixels on the screen and on the black bezel... am I out of luck? =;(

If I buy an AppleCare within a year, will I be able to get it repaired/exchanged then?

Description:
The "pixels" are rather large, it's like they cast a shadow as well, and I can't wipe them off with a cloth. Worth noticing is, that one of them is on the black bezel, on the top, which I can see at all times no matter if the screen is turned on or off, could that be a dead pixel as well?

Should I try exchanging it?

Edit:
Actually, I think it could be stuck pixels, as they are showing not just on black background but on white background as well.

Dust Cure

Hi,

I just took delivery of my new 21.5" i7 iMac last week and had several white/yellow dust particles under the glass as well as what appeared to be a small hair or eyelash.

After a call to AppleCare I was told to take it to my local Apple store for inspection or repair. I set up a genius bar appointment for the next day and ran it down there first thing. The genius seemed calm and reassuring when I showed him. He told me it would take 10-15 mins for them to clean it. He disappeared in the back and reappeared in about 10 mins. He powered up the machine and presto all better.

You can pop the front glass off yourself and clean it but I personally wouldn't take the risk as you might end up with more dust, fingerprints and damaged glass. If you feel confident there is a good video on YouTube that shows how to take the glass of with a suction cup.

Kind of a pain but thankfully and easy and quick fix..

Hmm.. I surely won't do it myself..
And we don't have Apple shops here in Denmark, though we do have Apple Resellers. I just didn't buy the iMac at that store, I bought it at a general electronics store, as it was just a base model anyway.

Maybe I should try to exchange it, I just don't think the warranty covers that.

Yes you need to buy the drives, and you'll want 3.5" drives at 2TB each. WD Green models will work great.

Alright, I'll look into the drives, thanks a lot! =)

I'll try exchange my iMac 27" (again) today, cause that dust inside the glass panel is rather distracting, i can even see it right now when the screen is white.

By the way, is the Synology wireless as well, so that all computers in the home can access its data? Or do I need the Airport Extreme?

I can't think of any NAS devices that have wireless built in, they all operate over gigabit ethernet for speed. That said, I have heard that the Synology units do support some USB wireless sticks, but you'll have to Google that.

If you're just using it for your iMac, then connect it directly with an ethernet cable (CAT5e or CAT6). If you've got other devices that you want to be able to access the NAS, then yes, you'll need some kind of router.

I guess I gotta go with a Time Capsule with 2TB for backup and then add hard drives to it - if that's possible - for media storage, or something like that.

Actually I just want the NAS/storage to be connected to my iMac and Mac Mini through wires and then those two machines could just do the wireless streaming to an Apple TV downstairs in the living room.

Any ideas?
It just needs to be connected through wires for these two macs.

I was thinking about trying this. A lot cheaper than a Time Capsule. My house is already wired for CAT 6, so speed shouldn't be an issue. I was going to go with a Mac Mini, but seems rather expensive if I'm just going to be using it for a file server. I guess there would be benefit in a iTunes Media Server, but a rather pricey one. The LaCie drive sells for $169 on Amazon for a 2TB.

That's good to hear!
Though, is it normal I can hear the fan of my iMac?
Or am I just being OCD about it all.. =/

And how will Apple be able to know, that I am eligible for OS X Lion?

Some hear the fan and some don't. While playing games where the heat increases and fands speed up. you will hear it.
Be sure that no shelf or obstruction is on top of your Imac as this will amplify the sound.
As for Apple knowing you are eligable for LION, save your invoice as proof . Apple will most likely come out with info when LION is released as to how recent purchasers obtain their copy.
Lastly, I wouldn't rush to get LION as needless to say there's going to be some updates after the release. waiting a week or two and avoiding some headaches is worth it.
