Had a 2019 Imac that was running perfectly. Then I upgraded to a 2020 Imac and Big Sur. In the 2 weeks I have had this POS, it has been nothing but problems. Everything is so slow. It has taken me 5 minutes to type this message to this point and the keystroke lag is crazy. Slow keys in accessability is off. Website rendering is slow even though I have a 900mb connection. Scrolling and mouse movements are inconstant. Sometimes it's fast and other times it lags. Rebooting and closing Safari only helps for a short time. I'm using a Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard that worked fine on the other computer

I should have been satisfied with my old system

I bought it from Apple 2 weeks ago.

It's a iMac 20,1 3.1ghz I5

What does a clean install entail? I'm not the most technical guy

I have a 2020 iMac and do not recommend upgrading to Monterey. That will just invite additional problems with Monterey that have not been yet resolved. The 2020 iMac runs perfectly with Big Sur, no lag, everything is fast and smooth. Something is wrong with yours. This is for Apple to resolve, not you. I would have returned it for another in the first 14 days, but now you need to contact Apple support.
I suggest also try use it with the Apple keyboard and mouse that came with it. Else Apple will just blame it on Logitech. You may need to reset bluetooth.

I would return it and purchase one of the 24" M1 iMacs. It sounds like something is wrong with yours in general, but even still, I wouldn't buy a new Intel machine at this point.

Can guarantee it's not intended behaviour. Call AppleCare, get some support let them do their best to isolate with a Senior tech, if needed they might ask you to clean install, or send logs to help them identify the issue. I know my 2018 MBP has been existing behaviours similar. Keen to hear how you get on. Wish you the best.

+ They can share screens with you if your not tech savvy. It won't cost you for their help. (even without AppleCare)

Not sure I would entirely agree that one should necessarily wait for the M1 iMac (with unknown features and price) instead of Intel. I have both an Intel machine (2020 iMac) and an Apple Silicon machine (14" MBP M1 Pro), and not biased either way.

There are many great deals on Apple refurb store for i5 2020 iMacs, which give the great 5K 27" screen, for not much more cost than the screen alone, and one can very cheaply add RAM oneself, giving a great machine for a great price especially for those that are not power users. I expect the M1 27"(+) iMacs could cost twice that amount once you include the expensive additional RAM. Also, much of the M1 processor advantage is low power usage, which really is not so much of an advantage for a desktop.

Return it before the window closes!

A 2 week old computer bought directly from Apple, should not act like this, in any circumstances. Obviously, there is something wrong with it.

I would advice to return, either get the 24inch M1, or, if you very much dislike the design of the M1, get another of the same, you got 2 weeks ago.

If you cannot wait or anything, try reset your PRAM as somebody said, in comment above.

Return it, get a 24" M1 iMac, or if you hate the smaller screen, get an Apple Mac Mini M1 and hook up an external monitor. That is absolutely not normal behavior. But right now it's a very bad idea to get an Intel Mac when Apple is wholly focus on moving everything to M1 right now.
