i have a pretty stupid question...

I don't have ATV I was thinking of getting one but do you have to buy everything you watch or do they have free stuff? Because if all it does is play my mp4's and such I'll keep using my ipod/iphone .

I am sorry if this is a really stupid question.

Hulu's resolution

I just got my invitation to Boxee. Never tried Hulu before. Does anyone know what the resolution for Hulu is on Boxee? Are there any HD feeds?

I've not seen any HD stuff on Hulu yet, but I don't use it that much, so I could be wrong.

The best (legal) way to reliably get free HD programming in the US is through an aerial antenna. :)

I'm tempted to get an AppleTV now, but I wonder if we'll see an actual hardware update (as opposed to just 'Take 3') at MacWorld.... maybe something Atom-based with integrated GPU assistance?

Maybe it's just me but I am perfectly happy with my Apple TV and love it and don't care to hack it.

I just wish Hollywood would give them all the movies and make them for rent on release and that I could more easily rip my DVDs onto it, but that is not in Apple's control obviously and Hollywood doesn't want that. Hollywood pisses me off.

hulu has some shows available in 480p but that always makes the show lag when I try to watch it at home on my cable connection or at work on the DSL connection

You need a VPN

Whats the work around for us that live outside the USA to get HULU playing on AppleTV (not my iMac). ????

Could someone help me out

You need a USA VPN, for example http://www.strongvpn.com/

Afterwards you need to set up a Router (Cheap Linksys for examlpe with custom firmware) or use ur Mac as a VPN Router.

You could also use Netflix Watch Instant that way.

not until 1080

i still dont understand why the apple tv doesn't support 1080i/p. it has been long enough since they upgraded the apple tv. how does something not support 1080i/p these days? 720? really?

i plan on getting one in the next few months if they will bump up the resolution.

else, it almost makes more sense to get an xbox and stream stuff to it.

1. Hardware doesnt handle 1080p

2. Visually there really isnt much difference

3. Needs to much bandwith to stream 1080p and is within the usa atm not possible for the most population

With the steep competition from Netflix Watch Instant i dont think that they are doing to well with their rental service.

with hulu, who would buy any episodes from itunes?

I would. I've got a MacBook streaming Hulu right next to our Apple TV. The more "visual" shows get bought on the AppleTV, while the standard dreck just gets streamed via Hulu. Third week without standard broadcast television of any sort, and this is still a really nice setup (especially the part about saving $50+ a month after losing DirecTV and adding in a handful of AppleTV download series).

If it's FREE, people tend to be a little more forgiving.

Briefly, iTunes shows have better framerate (ex, Chuck on Hulu is 15fps, although some shows are at 30fps/p), better compression quality, and no commercials. Important in that order.

So ... you install Hotspot Shield on your Mac or PC .... ? And it then lets you use Boxee on AppleTV to watch CBS or Hulu ?

How does that work ... It changes the Mac or PC's IP address or the router ?
Hows does it affect AppleTVs IP ?

Do you have to let your Mac online all the time so AppleTV can use Hotspot Sheild ?

Sorry.. only on my Mac. Not on my Boxee or AppleTV

Wouldn't it be easier to just use "Hotspot shield"? It works for me on the iMac, haven't tried it from the Apple TV, but I guess it should work since it changes the public IP in the modem.. right?

Just tried from my laptop and my imac running Hotspot shield...and it does not work...

Only what you can get free on iTunes and your ripped dvds and MP4's you acquired from other means.

You could always hook you're iPhone to your TV.

You're not going to have the fancy GUI, but it'll work nicely.

It took me a while to set up Boxee on my :apple: TV but now that it works, it is great!!!! hulu was the one thing missing from :apple: TV! (well that and a blue ray player according to a bunch of people) sure, hulu isn't HD, but it has all the TV shows i watch. I think i am going to cancel my cable service and just watch tv shows with Boxee and hulu!

Could you please explain how you have Hulu streaming to your AppleTV? This might be the practical choice for using a proxy or vpn for those outside of the US.
Thanks

I had (past tense; Boxee on the AppleTV is really nice, so all Hulu is going through it now) an old G4 PowerBook sitting next to our TV, hooked up via one of the RBG / VGA inputs on it. There's a bit more detail on how we set it up on my blog at http://tomdibble.wordpress.com/2008/10/08/dropping-satellite/ (the original bit) and http://tomdibble.wordpress.com/2008/10/24/dropped-satellite-two-weeks-later/ ...

Using the PowerBook rather than the AppleTV would make setting up a proxy rather easy (while not messing up the settings for how the AppleTV connects to iTMS). However, underneath it all the AppleTV is just a Mac running Tiger, and if you follow the instructions to make a patchstick to install Boxee on it, you also get ssh access to the box via the 'frontrow' account.

To the point of the thread here: I can say that Boxee really is a nice bit of software. Installing it on the AppleTV was easy (although pay special attention to the order of updating software; you always need to update the 'launcher' before the main Boxee app or your Boxee update won't get the most recent version). The only problems we've had are accessing the web interface it adds to the AppleTV (you can bring up a web browser to put together a video playlist and start it playing; this seems to be a bit crashy if something is playing on the AppleTV at the same time) and with missing functionality (Hulu is really nice except that you can not skip forward or backward in the stream yet; having a 'favorites' facility would be really nice). But, this is 'alpha' still ('beta' phase starting soon), and it's actually better than I'd expected for stability and feature set.
