Glad I still have an "old" 3G iPhone. IMHO tethered JailBreak is FAILBreak. Looks like Apple has beat the Jailbreak community on that. The iPhone 3GS has been out for like eight months, and they have not figured out a proper Jailbreak for the 3GS yet?

Maybe you can come up with an untethered jailbreak for us since you think its that simple and the JB community according to you failed.
I pitty Ungreatfull and miserable individuals like you that dont appreciate others time and endless efforts put into making JB happening for all of us free of charge.

I was wondering what happened last time I saw you on time out :D
Dont let TheSpaz get to ya.

I think I said he fetishized 2.2.1, which I thought was an objective assessment of his excessive and unreasoned devotion to the app. TheSpaz exploded, and I got a Time-Out for being "deliberately" insulting. How they know what's in my head I don't know... But at least I took him with me.

If I don't want to have to perform a tethered jailbreak every time I wish to reboot my phone, what exactly do I need to look for when purchasing a 3GS?

Also, are you missing out on anything by buying an older 3GS?

At the risk of sounding like knowing what I am talking about, I have the older 3gs with 3.1.2 jailbroken with blackra1n. I have my 4 favorite apps; MyWi, mxtube, xGPS and my most favorite; eyetv, so no, I do not feel I am missing anything. If I were to buy an iPhone I would buy the ones sold before October. If anyone can tell me something the latest ones can do that mine cannot I would be interested to know, unless it is not worth mentioning.

As directed by thelatinist, make sure the 3GS has 359.3 bootrom, not 359.3.2 bootrom and you can have an untethered jailbreak.

You check that in DFU mode. See link he provided.

You are very wrong. When the phone gets stuck after jailbreaking, all you have to do is run Blackra1n again to boot your phone. Once to jailbreak it, once to boot it. Then again any time you need to boot in the future.

This IS a jailbreak. Jailbreaking means removing the chroot jail which restricts access to system files and directories. ANY device can be jailbroken. Some devices, sadly, will not boot on their own after the jailbreak because the bootloader does a security check to make sure the system hasn't been modified, and there is not yet any way of disabling the security check on the new boot loader. The fact that your phone won't boot doesn't mean it isn't jailbroken; in fact, it is precisely because your phone is jailbroken that it will not boot on its own.

No, no, no! You can run blackra1n again and it will boot your phone. Once to jailbreak it, once to boot it. Then again any time you need to boot in the future. Stop being such a jerk and listen to the people you're asking help of.

I'm glad I came across this post as I just got a new 3GS and was wondering how to get blackra1n to work. I have been doing the whole jailbreak thing since 1.1.2 (if I recall correctly) on my iPod Touch 1G, and again on my iPhone 2G, 3G and original 3GS, so I am no "noob" to the jailbreak experience.

The need to have your iPhone connected to a computer to reboot the phone really is a hack solution. What if I am not home and my phone locks up and requires a reboot? This situation is less than ideal and I wouldn't even call it a full jailbreak because of that severe limitation on the device. Its like saying you need to be at a gas station with the gas pump in your car in order to start it each time, that may work but it hardly makes for a functional car.

That's why it's called a tethered jailbreak.

Jailbreak has one meaning and one meaning only: removing the chroot jail on the phone. That's all it means. If the chroot jail is gone, the phone is jailbroken. Period. It's a binary situation: jailbroken or unjailbroken, there's no "partial" or "full" jailbreak.

You are right that it is not ideal, but that does not mean it's not jailbroken.

No but MY OPINION is that it's not a true jailbreak. Rebooting or running out of battery is something that happens.

Basically Apple is winning the war on the jailbreakers!

If it bothers you, then sell that 3GS on eBay or Craigslist and buy a used 3GS with the old bootrom in pristine condition before the supply dries up.

Then you will be happy with your definition of jailbroken.

Please bear with me as I am one of those dreaded ""Noobs" :)

I have a 3GS (week 47). I have tried the black rain jailbreak and it will tell me that I have successfully jailbroken the phone. I then get Cydia going and it requires a reboot. Of course when it reboots it gives me the the screen image of plugging the phone into itunes and restore.

For clarification, is it at this point I am to run blackrain again and the phone will reboot normally? Or do I have to the button pressing thing to get it to reboot while plugged into my computer?

Thanks in advance

I used many tools to try and do so like redsn0w, pwrawnage (I think thats how you spell it), blackra1n, purplera1n and even sn0wbreeze. people im lost im not gonna sound like a tech. but am computer savey. so technical jargin will not confuse me. i do not have any SSH saved on cydia (remember never jailbroken). so what do i have to do to jailbreak this thing so i can unleash iphones true power?:D

No Joy

I have an iphone 3GS and I have tried over and over to get it back up. I never finished my contract with ATT cause I lost my job shortly after buy this phone. I got it maybe a month after it was first released.
I have been trying to find a solution but Black rain knocked my phone out. It does not boot back up just get the apple icon and then it goes black

I reran Black rain many times no luck,
I tried downloading reverting it to 3.1 by option clicking and choosing the file off my hard drive as instructed, I get told this iphone is not authorized for this rebuild.

I tried pulling my ATT card

The unit will do the blackrain deal as many timeas as I want but then the screen just goes black.

I never upgraded or restored my Iphone 3GS since I bought it so I don't know why you all say it always works when mine is still here and black. I have rebooted it back to recovery numerous times and reran Black rain but it stays the same no difference.

All I wanted to do was go to Tmobile but now I cant even get it to go past the restore screen

I don't pretend to know much but I am a 20 year vet of the Mac and work in graphics.

Could you please help me here? Step by step? Thanks
Scott
