Glad I still have an "old" 3G iPhone. IMHO tethered JailBreak is FAILBreak. Looks like Apple has beat the Jailbreak community on that. The iPhone 3GS has been out for like eight months, and they have not figured out a proper Jailbreak for the 3GS yet?![]()

If I don't want to have to perform a tethered jailbreak every time I wish to reboot my phone, what exactly do I need to look for when purchasing a 3GS?
Also, are you missing out on anything by buying an older 3GS?

Oh, and no: there is absolutely no difference between older 3GS phones and newer ones, aside from the patched version of iBoot.
You are very wrong. When the phone gets stuck after jailbreaking, all you have to do is run Blackra1n again to boot your phone. Once to jailbreak it, once to boot it. Then again any time you need to boot in the future.
This IS a jailbreak. Jailbreaking means removing the chroot jail which restricts access to system files and directories. ANY device can be jailbroken. Some devices, sadly, will not boot on their own after the jailbreak because the bootloader does a security check to make sure the system hasn't been modified, and there is not yet any way of disabling the security check on the new boot loader. The fact that your phone won't boot doesn't mean it isn't jailbroken; in fact, it is precisely because your phone is jailbroken that it will not boot on its own.
No, no, no! You can run blackra1n again and it will boot your phone. Once to jailbreak it, once to boot it. Then again any time you need to boot in the future. Stop being such a jerk and listen to the people you're asking help of.
I'm glad I came across this post as I just got a new 3GS and was wondering how to get blackra1n to work. I have been doing the whole jailbreak thing since 1.1.2 (if I recall correctly) on my iPod Touch 1G, and again on my iPhone 2G, 3G and original 3GS, so I am no "noob" to the jailbreak experience.
The need to have your iPhone connected to a computer to reboot the phone really is a hack solution. What if I am not home and my phone locks up and requires a reboot? This situation is less than ideal and I wouldn't even call it a full jailbreak because of that severe limitation on the device. Its like saying you need to be at a gas station with the gas pump in your car in order to start it each time, that may work but it hardly makes for a functional car.

Jailbreak has one meaning and one meaning only: removing the chroot jail on the phone. That's all it means. If the chroot jail is gone, the phone is jailbroken. Period. It's a binary situation: jailbroken or unjailbroken, there's no "partial" or "full" jailbreak.
You are right that it is not ideal, but that does not mean it's not jailbroken.
No but MY OPINION is that it's not a true jailbreak. Rebooting or running out of battery is something that happens.
Basically Apple is winning the war on the jailbreakers!

Please bear with me as I am one of those dreaded ""Noobs"
I have a 3GS (week 47). I have tried the black rain jailbreak and it will tell me that I have successfully jailbroken the phone. I then get Cydia going and it requires a reboot. Of course when it reboots it gives me the the screen image of plugging the phone into itunes and restore.
For clarification, is it at this point I am to run blackrain again and the phone will reboot normally? Or do I have to the button pressing thing to get it to reboot while plugged into my computer?
Thanks in advance
A
Rerun Blackra1n to start the phone. You got it.
