I don't know if this helps you out, but i recently purchased a 16 gig iphone 4 at the Modesto, CA. store around a week ago

2 year upgrade/contract renewal

My Reciept shows:

Sub-Total: $199.00
Tax@8.375%: $50.17
Total Paid: $249.17

And you got this through an Apple Store in Modesto or an ATT store?

I'm sorry, but every receipt I've ever gotten from the Apple Store has had the rate of sales tax:View attachment 254416

It could be different that maybe you purchased it from the Apple store compared to me getting it through the ATT store...now that I think of it, this is the first time I went to an ATT store to purchase my i4.....maybe I'll call Apple tomorrow and see what they say...

I was charged tax on full retail price of the iPhone 3GS last year and also on iPhone 4 this year in CA so it's not a recent changes in tax regulation. I bet OP paid similar amount last year unless he didn't purchase it in CA or any other states that have similar tax regulations.

It could be because of Ca taxes, but I NEVER was charged that for both my iPhone 3G and 3GS.....

Yes you were, because I was and I live in California (even the original iPhone). Its doesn't matter if you buy the phone at an Apple Store, AT&T, Best Buy, Walmart, Target or any other phone on any other network, the state of California charges you this tax for any phone regardless of where it is purchased.

I bought it at the Apple Store *Sorry, I forgot to mention that.*

I'm looking at both my receipt from both my iPhone 3G and 3GS, which the receipt on my iPhone 3G says:
Subtotal: $299.00
Sales Tax 8.25%
Sales total: $324.74
iPhone 3GS:
Subtotal: $299.00
Sales Tax: 8.90%
Sales Total: $326.69

So how do you explain this? I'm not trying to argue, well, actually I am but all I'm saying is that it just doesn't make any sense. Like I mentioned, I'll go back to the ATT store and get my answers straight...

You weren't charged full MSRP. As others have mentioned, the tax in CA is calculated on the full retail price. Welcome to CA. Yes its a somewhat recent change.

Please read your own thread.

Just to throw my personal experience I have had to pay the tax on the full retail price for every iPhone I've purchased. 2G, 3G, 3GS and now the i4. Purchased at AT&T, Apple stores and even online through Apple. I live in Long Beach Ca.. Not taking sides, but paying taxes on the full retail prices has been my experience. Ip4 cost around $370 for me.

Not sure who changed it but the tax was so high because they charge you the tax on the full price on the phoneo before the two year discount. I had to pay like $70 for a free phone because of the tax on the original price when I added my mother in law.

If you got these phones while living in CA and was only charged taxes on subsidized price than either you are BSing or just got lucky somehow. I don't understand why you keep doubting the forum since you're the one who decided to ask us in the first place.

Wow, someone is VERY sensitive here on the forum...my receipts that I have are legit, and I'm not BSing anyone or anyhow. In addition, I never doubted the forum, which is why I'm here in the first place, to ask questions and get reliable answers and not to get flamed on for getting opinions.
I'll ask my questions to the ATT store later when I get out from school, but more than likely will leave it at what most of everyone is saying that "Ca tax has changed." So this will probrably end my frustrations....

When I bought my 3G I was only charged tax on the subsidized price. This time I was charged tax on the full price of the phone. So it changed somewhere in between. This was in Orange County.

When I bought my 3G for $199 in July 2008 at AT&T store (I was switching from T-Mobile), I was charged the tax based on $399 (early upgrade price), then I ordered the second 3G through the AT&T fulfillment service, they charged the sales tax based on $199. I talked to the manager at the AT&T store and she credited me the difference.

When I bought the 3GS in Nov 2009 at Apple Store, I was charged the tax based on $599. Also, I bought the iPhone 4 on the launch day, I was charged the tax based on $599.
