This is the reason I don't use a strapped bag, the exact same thing happened to me a week after I got my 13", I was lucky it just put a small ding in the corner, but still ticked me off to have a dent in my week old MacBook Pro.

Anyhow I feel your pain!!

This maybe a long shot, but I would honestly take it to a local machine shop. They might not be able to fix it complete, but will most likely be able to make it look much better. Worth a shot...

Yep, they replaced the case and bottom plate. To top it off a week after they replaced everything my HDD, microphone, and camera failed all at once. I took it back and told them this happened either because the techs messed up putting everything back together, or as a result of the drop the HDD failed along with other hardware. To my surprise they gave me a whole new machine no questions asked. They said that three hardware failures at once indicates a lemon machine. I told him it's probably because of the drop a week ago. He was sympathetic and gave me a whole new machine.

It all depends on how you approach the situation. Some people go in there and demand a replacement because they think Apple owes them something. If you go in there and be honest they are more willing to help. Yes, my computer was a month old so it was under the original warranty. Sometimes they are even more willing to help if they know that you spent the extra cash to extend AppleCare.

If your are a honest person, you would not be going into an Apple store trying to get a part fixed/replaced due to an accident. I have seen it happen many times, and in a way I am very disappointed by it, cause we pay a premium for Apple goods, and one of the reasons is situations like this. I have damaged many of my Apple products, and I have lived with those accidents, I would never go into the store and expect it to be fixed. If you damaged a product and walk into an Apple store wanting it to be fixed for free, you think Apple owes you something.....sad!

You are not understanding the point of my post, and at the end of your post you pretty much regurgitated exactly what I said. A lot of people go to the store to recieve a quote for fixing their machine due to an accident, therefore fully prepared to pay the price. I was ready to drop the money to fix the dent. However the genius felt sympathetic and received authorization to fix my MBP for free. If you think this makes me a dishonest person then so be it, I don't know you anyways and could care less.

Bring your cute sister with the doggy eyes to the Apple store then cry.

Or

Count your blessings, you have now, a PRE-SCRATCHED laptop. You won't be obsess to its appearance anymore and can concentrate what you do with it. ;)

Awe don't feel too bad, it is a handsome war wound - these awesome engineered machines by Apple are great even if a little scuffed up! If it is still under warrantee just get them to replace the body, they have for me when that has happened to me. My friend has dropped her mbp so much but the innards are still pristine and precious as ever.

All the BEST!

My way to make you feel better, if you private message me I'll dedicate a free song to you to download and feel better as today is my birthday and this girl is feeling super generous :D

That sounds like the worst backpack ever.

Backpacks are not supposed to be dropped at that distance with something like that in it period. Gravity is a biatch. Made in China. When ever you buy anything it is a lotto. My backpack is pretty awesome I got it from Apple with my 17" MBP, but one day it fell from the upper shelf of my walk in closet and it hit the right thing going down and totally dented the heck out of the edge of my beauty. So now if the beauty is in her house, she is on the floor by herself, nothing over top of her but a shelf and nothing around her but bedding. I also love the waist and chest straps, they are super - super handy.

Some credit cards cover this sort of thing for the first 90 days or so.

I would check with that.

If i had insurance I would collect, obviously.

If not, I would take it to as many Apple stores in my area (quite a few actually) that I could stomach, and try to be so cool and nice that they wanted to help my even though it would essential be a personal favor.

You see, for me this is easy....NOT, but anyway, that's what I would do.

Or try to do. God bless you :)

Do they keep a record of the serial number, when they take it for evaluation?

I have insurance that covers my all my kit, (cameraman) including my macbook, as well as 3 years applecare.

Get a repair estimate from Apple or Apple authorized repair center and file a claim with the insurance.

If anyone is able to offer me any advice on what they would do in this situation I would be really grateful.
So sorry for your misfortune.

Step One: Be kind to yourself.

Step Two: Remember it was an accident

Step Three: Ignore the "you should have" advice in other posts. Hindsight is twenty twenty and it's easy for others to say what you "should have done"

Step Four: See step one... that's the most important action.

I could have worded that better. Nope not saying your dishonest, as your said, you got lucky with the genius, one does not turn down an offer to have something repaired for free. My frustration rests with so many people that come into stores without appointments, start up a fuss and most of the time get thier way. So many times I have seen the staff member do what is right and tell the customer there is nothing to do, to see the customer keep whinning to the point of the manager getting involved, and when the manager could not reason with them, to avoid a scene in the store, the customer got their way.... shocking! Problem is that other see this.... some apple customers have thier own reality distortion field when it comes to Apple products.

My homeowners insurance will cover my computer while in my possession on a trip away from home, less my deductible of course.

Hey Guys thanks so much for all the responses!

Been away a week but thought I would just update on what happened as someone above was wondering!

I went to the Apple Store and was completely honest, told them I was super annoyed and could tell they felt my pain - nice guys and girls that work there!

They ran diagnostics on it and determined it was absolutely fine, they also reassured me that my Applecare WOULD still hold if it was to later develop a fault, as they were convinced the drop had not internally damaged anything - phew!

This sounds crazy, but I got a very fine metal file and sandpaper and took the metal burs off and the worse of the scrape. Although it wasn't awful to start, it now looks much better.

In hindsight, I could have easily claimed on my kit insurance and easily had the repair to the case done, but I had only had the insurance cover for 3 weeks and couldn't bring myself to claim for a £500ish repair (entirely new display panel and lower base panel/battery) just to fix a scratch on the corner.

A few weeks on I now carry it in a far better case... maybe a bit excessive but it won't happen again ;)

Can we have a closer pic of the corner where it was dropped. Just wanna see how it turned out

Feeling like a complete moron right now.

A week ago, I was really pleased to receive my new upgraded Macbook Pro Retina, and had it delivered with a hardcase.

Having found a great padded crumpler bag online, I ordered it and expected it early next week, but in the mean time I've been going to an from work with it in the hardcase, in my backpack.

Today, in possibly the most unfortunate circumstances, the strap on my backpack snapped (new backpack) and my new MBP slammed into the fresh car park floor. The concreate cut through the corner of the bag, and just so typically, into the only corner of the mac the hardcase doesn't provide complete protection. (if only I have put the mac in the backpack the other way round..)

The damage cosmetically, really isn't dreadful, although I'm seriously pissed at myself & the seemingly stupid circumstances. I'm also really worried that I may have internally damaged this £2500 beauty as the fall was from quite some height and the impact seemed so forceful.

I have insurance that covers my all my kit, (cameraman) including my macbook, as well as 3 years applecare.

If anyone is able to offer me any advice on what they would do in this situation I would be really grateful.

Man, that scratch is nothing to worry about! Hah, I was expecting to click on that picture and see at least some shattered glass.

Don't worry - MBPs are sturdy (there's a reason they make them out of aluminium!); if you don't notice any problems it's fine. Obviously it's not nice to happen to a new machine, but internally you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

The MBPs are even more sturdy than the previous models, because they don't have any moving parts (except the fans, which don't seem to be on very often for me and wouldn't be on while the machine was asleep). There's nothing inside that should be especially vulnerable to shock or shaking.

Basically the only vulnerability of these laptops is that glass screen of the LCD (which isn't under any protective layer of glass - it looks much better like this, but it's more easily breakable).

I actually feel a little bit physically sick looking at that photo.

Sorry for your misfortune mate
